Throughout Eveline Adomait and Richard Maranta’s Dinner Party Economics there is continuous discussion surrounding the problems that economies face around the world and the various methods that can be used to alter the state of the current economic conditions. Changes in consumer spending patterns can become a problem for the economy as a whole, potentially resulting in over-inflation or recession. Implementing discretionary policies such as monetary policy through changing interest rates, and fiscal policy through taxation and government spending, makes it possible to fix these economic problems.
Inflation occurs when consumers are spending like crazy, and “the central banks flood the system with too much money,” (DPE, 37). They do so through

But as we know, there is always going to be one or the other. The reason that an economy is thrown out of equilibrium in the first place is a result of consumer spending habits. If these habits are changed, there is a result is one of two things. If consumers increase there spending habits, an inflationary gap occurs. At the opposite end of the spectrum, if consumers were to reduce their spending, the result is a recessionary gap. Inflation occurs when the economy is growing uncontrollably fast as a result of consumer spending. This rapid rate of inflation happens when consumers are spending money due to increases in income. When consumers spend more, this increases the overall price level, which therefore leads to a further increase in income. This cycle is what leads to over-inflation. One of two things can be done when an economy is experiencing an economic gap, whether it is above or below the trend line. Option one is to do nothing about it and let the problem work itself out. The problem with this method is that in order for a recession to work itself out without government assistance, this requires that workers take pay cuts – something that a very low percentage of people are accepting of simply due to the personal …show more content…
When interest rates on loans are high, this leaves people with less disposable income resulting in less consumer spending. Depending on where the economy stands, this can be good or bad, as it would lead toward recession. But that may be exactly what is intended in order to decrease spending if the economy is currently experiencing over-inflation. The government may intentionally send the market into a recession rather than potentially risking too high levels of inflation. On the other hand, if the economy were already in recession this would only make the recession worse. In the situation where the economy is currently in recession, the government is instead going to change the overnight rate in order to therefore lower interest rates on loans in order to provoke consumer
From classroom to a cocktail party, having knowledge in today’s economics is definitely an asset when it comes surviving in the world of business. Cocktail Party Economics, by Eveline Adomait, and Richard Maranta undeniably satisfies as an economic training book, helping you understand the concepts of basic economics. The book brings to light many theories and thoughts, which are explained in a certain way that help readers easily, compare and relate them to each other. During the first couple chapters of the book, the main theories presented are scarcity, value, opportunity cost, production, and absolute/comparative advantage. Believe it or not, all of these theories are relatable to Supply and Demand; the two concepts introduced in chapters six and seven.
In conclusion, regardless of Macropoland’s current economic condition, it is fair to say that it is all part of the business cycle. The business cycle has three parts: peak, trough, and peak. The peak is the date that the recession starts. In Macropoland’s case, the peak would be at the beginning of 1973, its trough somewhere between 1973 and 1974, and then its peak again at 1974. In the second scenario, Macropoland is either at its trough, where it is about to head up again because of its low inflation rate, or it is at its expansion, on its way to heading to its next peak.
The Classical economists believe that these are “temporary” changes that will correct themselves in the long run. They feel that an economy will always tend towards operating at its potential output (as given by the long-run aggregate supply curve. Nothing needs to be done by the government because normal market forces will serve to self-correct these issues. On the other hand, Keynesian economics argue that the gap between the lower and the potential levels of output is due to a change in aggregate demand. They argue that this gap can exist for a long time and that the gap can be pushed to close faster if the government enacts fiscal and monetary policies. There are differences in how each policy works to close the recessionary gap caused by a drop in aggregate
I chose Akbar the Mughal Emperor, Procopius, and Thomas Aquinas as my three to attend a dinner party. I knew I wanted to write about knowledge. Originally, I wanted to include the Queen of Sheba as a member of the dinner party, but I questioned whether I would be able to include enough about this character. My first choice was Thomas Aquinas, because he focused on reason as a way to acquire knowledge. This means that knowledge is internal for him. One section in the Summa Theologica is the “Gift of Knowledge”. I also wanted to play with Aquinas’ writing style. I chose Akbar because he invited so many diverse scholars to speak about a wide array of topics. I use his character to discuss the ways we use knowledge. My final choice was Procopius. I chose Procopius instead of the Queen of Sheba, so I could bring up how we present our knowledge and how our knowledge evolves. Procopius wrote The Secret History and the History of the Wars. These works have alternate views of Justinian, that evolved with events during that time period. My goal is to find a conclusion from these about the value of knowledge, how knowledge is used, and how knowledge is presented.
Inflation; ‘a situation in which prices rise in order to keep up with increased production costs… result[ing] [in] the purchasing power of money fall[ing]’ (Collin:101) is quickly becoming a problem for the government of the United Kingdom in these post-recession years. The economic recovery, essential to the wellbeing of the British economy, may be in jeopardy as inflation continues to rise, reducing the purchasing power of the public. This, in turn, reduces demand for goods and services, and could potentially plummet the UK back into recession. This essay discusses the causes of inflation, policy options available to the UK government and the Bank of England (the central bank of the UK responsible for monetary policy), and the effects they may potentially have on the UK recovery.
Money—in the form of gold bars or paper faces, currency has been a system used in almost every modern society to regulate exchange and to represent wealth. While it is an effective bureaucratic system, money creates inevitable social divides. In the vein of philosopher and sociologist Karl Marx in his famous work, The Communist Manifesto, the haves and have-nots are in a constant struggle between oppressor and oppressed. The Dinner, a novel by Herman Koch, chronicles a brief encounter between the narrator and main character, Paul, Claire, Serge, and Babette, his wife, brother, and his sister-in-law, respectively. his wife, his brother, Serge, and his sister-in-law, Babette. The four must meet to discuss the fate of their children after they
In the study of macroeconomics there are several sub factors that affect the economy either favorably or adversely. One dynamic of macroeconomics is monetary policy. Monetary policy consists of deliberate changes in the money supply to influence interest rates and thus the level of spending in the economy. “The goal of a monetary policy is to achieve and maintain price level stability, full employment and economic growth.” (McConnell & Brue, 2004).
When decisions bases on a consumers finances have following consequences further than the near future, then an individuals' success economically could depend on the ability they have to foresee the upcoming rate of inflation. according to statistics, higher expectations for inflation were reported by females who were poorer, they were single and they were less educated. More specifically, higher expectations for inflation were reported by people who focused more-so with how they can cover future purchases and expenses and the prices they will pay, and by ones who have lower knowledge on financial literacy.

It is difficult for government to achieve all the macroeconomics objectives at the same time. Conflicts between macroeconomics objectives means a policy irritating aggregate demand may reduce unemployment in the short term but launch a period of higher inflation and exacerbate the current account of the balance of payments which can also dividend into main objectives and additional objectives (N. T. Macdonald,
Difficulties in Formulating Macroeconomic Policy Policy makers try to influence the behaviour of broad economic aggregates in order to improve the performance of the economy. The main macroeconomic objectives of policy are: a high and relatively stable level of employment; a stable general price level; a growing level of real income (economic growth); balance of payments equilibrium, and certain distributional aims. This essay will go through what these difficulties are and examine how these difficulties affect the policy maker when they attempt to formulate macroeconomic policy. It is difficult to provide a single decisive factor for policy evaluation as a change in political and/or economic circumstances may result in declared objectives being changed or reversed. Economists can give advice on the feasibility and desirability of policies designed to attain the ultimate targets, however, the ultimate responsibility lies with the policy maker.
As a result of this economic growth families will begin to feel more confident and will begin to spend more of their money instead of saving it because they believe that will receive a pay raise or will find a better job. (Amadeo, 2016) Borrowing also increases when economic activity is high people begin to borrow from banks and other places because they feel that the government has been doing a great job managing the economy. (Amadeo, 2016) As we have seen in 2008 people should never get to confident in the economy because our economic bubbles are used to crashing when they are doing very well and it’s never really the people’s fault it’s the governments. Although inflation begins to rise when the economy is doing great one of the things that is known to bring prices down is competition among businesses. Competition is great because one company will attempt to sell a product for a cheaper price than another company which results in lower prices the same as you see with cell phones and automobiles. Higher prices can also be caused by technological innovations when people are expecting a new product the producer can sell it for a higher price because they know that consumers will spend almost any amont of money to obtain that product. (Amadeo, 2016) Higher demand for new products will increase employment to meet those demands and inflation will rise which will benefit the economy tremendously. Whenever the price level increases, spending must also increase to be able to buy the same amount of goods and
I disagree with this statement. I don’t think that inflation is always bad for the economy, because inflation can in time lead to deflation. An example of the effect of inflation would be consumers spending less money when prices are constantly rising, because they would rather buy the items now and spend less money than purchasing them in the future. Even though deflation is normally considered a negative thing, it’s not always bad either. Good inflation is something that happens when companies can manufacture good at lower cost without losing revenue or raising unemployment. One way that the government can increase deflation is by putting more money into supply by purchasing securities. In the end, both inflation and deflation are both parts
Inflation is the rate at which the purchasing power of currency is falling, consequently, the general level of prices for goods and services is rising. Central banks endeavor to point of confinement inflation, and maintain a strategic distance from collapse i.e. deflation, with a specific end goal to keep the economy running smoothly.
Inflation is one of the most important economic issues in the world. It can be defined as the price of goods and services rising over monthly or yearly. Inflation leads to a decline in the value of money, it means that we cannot buy something at a price that same as before. This situation will increase our cost of living.
