Introduction Dignity and meaningful work, is an important topic to be discussed as it can influences employees` feeling, and their feelings are enabled influencing their performance during the workplace. According to Sayer (2007: p.565), “Dignity is crucial for our well-being and a significant influence on job satisfaction.” Therefore, the general business performance of a company will be affected. In regard to dignity, there are numbers of author have discussed this topic. (Kant 1790, Hodson 1996) According to Sensen (2011), however, he considers that the meaning of dignity has been changed because of the change of culture, technology, and also lifestyle. Therefore, it made us think about do we need to rethink about the meaning of dignity? In the following, there will being discussed some concept of dignity and meaningful work. After that, there will also being provided my own working experience during the workplace with some opinions of other candidates, in order to provide evidences for analyzing and understanding young employees towards dignity and meaningful work, and explore how they think about dignity and meaningful in their work. Literature Review: According to Bolton (2006), he mentioned dignity during workplace can be divided as two part- “dignity in work” and “dignity at work”. Dignity at work, which is referring to dignity, is satisfied by materialism, and also relatively tangible, and easier to be defined. For example, wellbeing, just rewarded, voice, security, and equal opportunity etc. Those elements can be provided by the company, and compare with “dignity in work”, it tends to be objectivity. On the other hand, the elements of “dignity in work” are more difficult to be satisfied as they are more subjective wh... ... middle of paper ... ...and their impact towards dignity of employee in workplace. On the other hand, young employees mainly focus on “dignity in work” rather than “dignity at work”, as they may consider job opportunities, feeling in work and meaningful work are more important than how many salary they earn. However, the meaning of dignity or other elements, such as autonomy and respect, can be different from different young employees. Therefore, employers and managers need to build positive and close relationship with young employees, in order to understand their thought of dignity and those relevant factors, and also mental needs, which enable organization to develop sustainably as prevent the loss of new young employees. Hence, organization needs to communicate with their young employees, and accept their feedback during the work, although this personalized method may be time-costing.
In the essay, “The Work Ethic, In A Modern Guise”, author Joanne B. Ciulla talks about how the modern style of working is different from the traditional and old work ethic, and how the young and coming generation does not want to work hard but instead wants instant results. The long lasting formula of working hard and performing seems to be fading away. Instead of mastering the subject, students care about the final results and brownie points. Moreover, Ciulla asserts that students engage in activities that pay-off well in the end rather than the excellence of the work. In the article, Ciulla describes the situation of today’s students being more centred about the idea of getting a higher grade. According to Ciulla, students do not show determination but they want second-chances so that they can have a better grade than before. Students want that better grade simply because they have put a lot of time. Sometimes, professors unreasonably give students a higher grade which leads to a false confidence among students which is the root of other causes. In the end o...
Dignity is a timeless desire and will always be chased by the human race. Compared to fame and revenge, dignity is a healthier ambition. Aristotle once said, “Dignity does not consist in possessing honors, but in deserving them” (How to regain your dignity, 2013).
Human Dignity: We are all created in the image of God and therefore should be treated as humans with dignity and respect. The value or worth of human life.
The Royal College of Nursing (RCN, 2009) defines dignity as treating someone as you or your family would want to be treated, when they are feeling vulnerable. According to ( Matiti & Baillie,2011) in modern world the word dignity has lost its meaning, whether it is intentionally or unintentionally, nurses have become very mechanical, trying to give care for dummies rather than human beings, who have emotions, feelings and self-respect, and not realising what impact patients will have when nurses show this kind of attitude. Patient centred care is vital for all nurses, without, discriminating against colour, gender, race, and religious beliefs. Following the code of conduct which is expected of the nurse, working according to the needs of the patients, being a good listener and respecting them. When the nurse shows dignity and respect, she/he tends to develop a therapeutic relationship with patient which in turn results in good health and rehabilitation (NMC, 2008).
Nurses everywhere face problems and challenges in practice. Most of the challenges occur due to a struggle with the use of ethical principles in patient care. Ethical principles are “basic and obvious moral truths that guide deliberation and action,” (Burkhardt, Nathaniel, 2014). Ethical principles that are used in nursing practice include autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, veracity, confidentiality, justice, and fidelity. These challenges not only affect them, but the quality of care they provide as well. According to the article, some of the most frequently occurring and most stressful ethical issues were protecting patient rights, autonomy and informed consent to treatment, staffing problems, advanced care planning, and surrogate decision making (Ulrich et. al, 2013). The ethical issue of inadequate staffing conflicts with the principle of non-maleficence.
Dignity and respect for patients is important in adult nursing because without it, it dehumanises them, and creates opportunities for abuse and ill treatment to occur. Lack of dignity and respect can also cause emotional problems for patients, as they are already in a vulnerable state.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, dignity is “The state or quality of being worthy of honour or respect.” (Oxford Dictionary, 2017). Living a life of dignity is individual to each person, but regardless of who they are, or what illness they may be suffering from, they deserve dignity and respect in the way that they are cared for. The cornerstone of nursing care is providing dignity to our patients. The issue can arise when a patient chooses to end their life versus letting the disease or aging process take its natural course, and the individual beliefs that nurses feel about this very difficult topic.

Dignity is defined as “the quality or state of being worthy, honored, or esteemed. (Webster, 1828). Treating patients with respect and dignity can make the difference in their response to illness. Patients want to be treated as individuals that have a medical condition and are seeking help and in the same vein be treated with respect.
Human dignity assumes a key part in any social change that intends to advance the quality and estimation of life of people and the group. Any vital social change must have an ethical establishment, for change is frequently grounded in good moral resentment about social encounters that belittle persons and individuals. Likewise, in healthcare insurance change, both thoughts of human pride must work together. Plus, human dignity in the widespread sense offers the theoretical and logical structure needed to legitimize health care reform. All persons ought to have the capacity to acknowledge that on the grounds that individuals

In conclusion this paper has looked at some of the work ethics important for success in the workplace. The paper explicitly looked at teamwork and communication. These two work ethics along with the other eight work ethics of attendance, appearance, attitude, character, cooperation, organization, productivity, and respect should play an important part in one’s working career.
Mayo’s theory of human relations is directed towards an employee’s social needs. Elton Mayo is credited to introducing the human relation school of thought. According to him pay alone is not enough to my motivate workers to produce their best (Latham, 2007). Social needs of the workers for example treating them in a humane and caring manner should be considered. In this video we learn not only of the decent pay that the workers receive but their working conditions are of high standards. The adequate space maintained between machinery, correct protective equipment for employees as well as proper work gear has been observed. The company is not biased against women as they form part of the workforce and with the great machinery available they are a...
Ethics in the workplace is a very important thing to have. Without a sense of ethicality in the workplace there are many things that could go wrong. You could even end up losing a job because of a lack of ethics, or other consequences could be felt due to a lack of caring or morality. The workplace is a place that you should show respect and dignity, and a deeper sense of ethics is very important in order to uphold these senses of morality. Workplace ethics, which include such things as behavior, integrity, commitment, teamwork, and other things, are important, if not required, in most workplaces and can help to improve performance and morale for workers and employers.
