During the year: 1691, in Ireland, the Battle of Aughrim was fought between the Williamites and the Jacobites. The skirmish resulted in victory for the Williamites. With this defeat, the Treaty of Limerick was forged and the Jacobites were given a choice: leave Ireland or perish. To ensure compliance, estates belonging to the Jacobites were seised and they found themselves banished to either North America, France, or Canada. Among those exiled were the Lawlesses, a firmly Jacobite family (Irish Origins of Lawless). This was when my ancestor, James Lawless, voyaged to America. James Lawless was born in 1675 in Kilkenny, Ireland. After the Treaty of Limerick was signed, James departed from Dublin, with all five of his brothers, and traveled to Virginia. In 1699, he married Elizabeth Dempsey of Essex County, Virginia. Elizabeth was a white slave to a planter in the region. After giving birth to a child outside of wedlock, her indenture was increased by a year as punishment. The extension binded her as a slave until the age of 21. After marrying Both groups were forced to leave their homeland due to political conflict. My family fled after the Jacobites were defeated by the Williamites, while Cuban Americans fled the dictatorship of Castro and economic conditions in Cuba. Some later Irish immigrants were unfavored just as some Cuban immigrants were seen as undesirable. The majority of Cuban Americans were localized to Florida, while my family spread from Virginia to Kentucky to Kansas. Cuban Americans formed enclaves to survive, while my family consolidated themselves into the larger society. Cubans were associated with stereotypes such as: too successful and too ambitious. Stereotypes for Irish include: argumentative drunks, and swindlers. After settling in America, both groups experienced better education, job availability, and rise in socio-economic class over
