Irish vs Barbaric Americans: A Modern Interpretation of 1800’s Immigration The United States was a recently forged nation state in the early 1800’s. Recently formed, this nation state was very fragile and relied on the loyalty of its citizens to all work collectively toward the establishment and advancement of the nation states. Many members of the nation state gave great sacrifices, often their lives, to see that the united states was a successful and democratic. However, the United States, was fundamentally a mixing pot of all foreign people (excluding marginalized Native Americans). Throughout the entire movie, the immigrants live as poor people and are treated even worse. They are constantly being abused by the “natives” because they are Catholic. We see this most notably socially, but also politically. Very often, Irish describe the a form of abuse they endure at the hands of the “native” Americans. This is unfortunate, but the reality of immigrant live for the Irish in the 1800’s. At the core of “natives” concerns was a shift from political power in the hands of “natives” to political power in the hands of the Irish immigrants, who could be loyal to the pope in Europe. Despite this, the Irish still enjoyed the benefits of the United States nation state and celebrated in the benefits, far superior to those of Ireland at the time.vi As was seen in the movie Gangs of New York, many corrupt politicians persuaded immigrants for support in elections and often employed illegal and manipulative tactics on election day to cast multiple votes.vii There were even political cartoons included in immigration reading excerpts depicting the irish as barbaric monkeys and blaming them for election day violence as well as showing them tear apart the democratic system established by “native” Americans.viii These were likely intended for distribution amongst “native” Americans,

Ellis island brought millions of immigrants to America between the years 1892 and 1954. It is said that 40% of our population today can trace their ancestors to Ellis Island. Many people of many nationalities came to The United States get a chance at having the “American Dream”. Whilst pursuing their dreams, they left their marks on American culture. No one has influenced us so much as the Italians and their way of life.
Immigration to America from Europe was at an all time high in the mid-1800s. After the potato famine in Ireland in the 1840s, a large group of Irish immigrated to the United States. Since then, increasing numbers of Irish people have been moving to the United States, especially in Chicago. The Irish had come to realize that the United States really is the land of opportunity. With jobs being available to the immigrants, many more shipped in to start new lives for their families. However, for quite a while they did not live in the nicest of areas in Chicago. Many of the Irish resided in low-class areas such as overcrowded parts around the Loop, and out in the West Side. Not only did the West Side shelter the Irish, but many Germans and Jews lived in that area.
Taylor (Puck, 1889) portrays how Columbia is stirring a bowl labeled “Citizenship” with a spoon labeled “Equal Rights” and a pained expression on her face indicating that she is trying to keep the immigrants under control. The labelling plays a part in identifying the problem that America is having with full assimilation. America has had the reputation of being seen as a melting pot, but in this cartoon the Irish man is being shown as a strong supporter of Irish nationalism rather than assimilating into society. There are many different nations represented in the bowl, but primarily an Irish man that jumps up yelling whilst waving a dagger and a green flag. He is wearing a sash which reads “Blaine Irishman”, which refers to the republican politician who attempted to lure Irish voters away from the Democratic Party with a combination of anti-British rhetoric and lip service to the cause of Irish nationalism. (2) The rest of the men within the bowl are Racialized and under control, but the symbolism of the colors the Irishman is wearing along with his labeling shows how the Irishman is “the one element that won’t mix”. The process of assimilation was crucial for the government at this point because they believed it would make immigrants more loyal and moral citizens. “During the war…interest focused not on the old objective of restriction but rather on new policies of repression, Americanization, and deportation.” (Closing the Gates). Newcomers were pushed to learn English and to change their cultural customs, which in turn led to prejudice against immigrants. The implementation of Americanization demonstrates the anti-immigration attitudes that were present in the country. Assimilation was used in order to make the immigrants fit the American standards so that they didn’t stand out in the crowd, it was used to bring the country closer together and retain the sense true patriotism. In Chapter 8 of Major Problems in American Immigration History, the topic of focus shifts from the United States proper to the expansion and creation of the so called American Empire of the late Nineteenth Century. Unlike other contemporary colonial powers, such as Britain and France, expansion beyond the coast to foreign lands was met with mixed responses. While some argued it to be a mere continuation of Manifest Destiny, others saw it as hypocritical of the democratic spirit which had come to the United States. Whatever their reasons, as United States foreign policy shifted in the direction of direct control and acquisition, it brought forth the issue of the native inhabitants of the lands which they owned and their place in American society. Despite its long history of creating states from acquired territory, the United States had no such plans for its colonies, effectively barring its native subjects from citizenship. Chapter 8’s discussion of Colonialism and Migration reveals that this new class of American, the native, was never to be the equal of its ruler, nor would they, in neither physical nor ideological terms, join in the union of states.
Throughout the first half of the 19th century, and especially after the War of 1812, America has taken on yet another revolution. In this time period, the country saw a rapid expansion in territory and economics, as well as the extension of democratic politics; the spread of evangelical revivalism; the rise of the nation’s first labor and reform movements; the growth of cities and industrial ways of life; a rise in abolitionism and reduction in the power of slavery; and radical shifts in the roles and status of women.

The Irish American Scholar Program will significantly enhance my educational goals for school as well as my life experiences. The unique opportunity this program offers coincides with a family value of expanding one’s knowledge beyond the small bubble of the everyday and exploring the world. The value of embracing new opportunities started with my grandfather when he broke away from the norm of his family and expanded his boundaries. His family, traditionally, lived and moved together, but when his family moved to Michigan, my grandfather decided to remain in Arkansas and join the Air Force, allowing him to travel not only in the United States but abroad to England. Similarly, my father decided to go to college several hours away from his family at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. This decision led him to a career with the government where he was able to experience several different cultures in the workplace and abroad. Being surrounded by inspirational family members has inspired me to pursue my own unique experience.
In the eyes of the early American colonists and the founders of the Constitution, the United States was to represent the ideals of acceptance and tolerance to those of all walks of life. When the immigration rush began in the mid-1800's, America proved to be everything but that. The millions of immigrants would soon realize the meaning of hardship and rejection as newcomers, as they attempted to assimilate into American culture. For countless immigrants, the struggle to arrive in America was rivaled only by the struggle to gain acceptance among the existing American population.
During the 1920’s there were many controversial issues. There was a concern about declining moral and ethical values, which led to restrictions such as prohibition for example. The concern about these issues seemed most intense when they pertained to religion. In situations like these it always seems necessary to place the blame somewhere. One particular group on which this blame was emphasized happened to be the immigrants. Irish Catholic immigrants were a main focus of discrimination in many ways.
The immigration influx during the late 1890 into the early 1900s was a key characteristic of the Progressive Era. Although this country may have experienced rises and falls in immigration rates over the century, the goal of immigrants remains the same. Regardless of their agreement or disagreement with Roosevelt’s views on Americanism, the United States is a symbol of hope, possibility, justice, and freedom, to both native-born Americans and immigrants alike; and we all stand united on that front. That is true Americanism.
The period between the late 1800s and 1900s saw the outlook of US population shift and change drastically. The Gilded age contributed a lot in this change through its massive economic expansion and influx of new immigrants from Europe and Asia. Japanese, Chinese and Jewish immigrants became an integral part of the nation despite the huge challenges they faced in their new home. America to them just like all other earlier immigrants was a land of hope and opportunity. However, reality struck once these immigrants settled since they were constantly under attack from natives (Jones et al 747). This paper examines the nature of Asian immigration into the United States in the gilded age and early 20th century; it will examine the push and pull factors of immigration and sentiments they evoked among natives.
Immigration has always been a major part of America. In fact, without immigration the creation of America would not have been possible. The majority of immigrants came to America for religious freedom and economic opportunities. However, for the most part before the 1870’s most immigrants were Protestants from northern and western Europe. These immigrants often migrated to the United States as families and usually lived on farms with family or friends who had already migrated beforehand. A lot of immigrants came to America with a plan or goal in mind. They often had saved up money for the long immigration overseas, were skilled in a certain trade, or had already been educated at a high level. Sadly, this would not last. Immigration became so prominent in America between 1870 and 1900 that the foreign-born population of the United States had almost doubled. A lot of German and Irish Catholics had immigrated in the 1840’s and 1850’s, and more decided to immigrate after the Civil War. A portion of Americans were biased against Catholics. Thankfully, the Irish spoke English and the German Catholics reputation was improved because of their Protestant countrymen’s good reputation. However, their children often lacked any skill or education, but they were able to blend in quite well with the American society. More and more immigrants would migrate to the United States without any skill or education and on top of that they were usually poor. These immigrants were called “new” immigrants and they came from all over the world including Italy, Greece, Poland, Hungary, and Russia. Despite the fact that people in today’s society view diversity as a beneficial factor, many in the colonial period despised the immigrants. Because many Irish came to the state in penury, they faced discrimination, resentment and suspicion (New York City 26). Many non-Irish thought of the Irish as brutal and cruel cowards. Contrastingly, many German immigrants were not hated as much because they came to the state wealthier and had more Protestant backgrounds. One specific encounter of intolerance was when a non-Irish male stated, “This Celtic beast with many heads is driven back to his hole for the present” referring to the Irish as the Celtic beasts (Jackson and Dunbar 204). When arriving, a lot of Irish entered the work force at the bottom of the ladder. They endured in a lot of dangerous job, building railroads, mining coal, digging canals, etc. Many women became servants or domestic workers. Living conditions were not the best, and many were often over crowded. Mobs and violence broke out due to the poor living conditions, their willingness to work for low wages, long standing religious tension between Irish Catholics and protestants, and replacing native-born workers with lower paid Irish. Over time, many Irish climbed occupational and social ladders. They reached these standards by politically appointed positions such as policeman, fireman, and teachers.
