When you compare Bollywood and Hollywood, you can definitely see that there are several differences and similarities when you think about it. You would think that the United States would produce more movies a year than anywhere else in the world. But in actuality, Bollywood is known for producing more than 800 films a year! While the United States produces half as many. There has always been a controversy between Bollywood and Hollywood, but what is exactly causing it? Yes, they are top film productions, but so many Hollywood celebrities have collaborated with Bollywood celebrities, and that works the other way around. Is it because one film industry thinks the other is copying them? Is it because there is a bigger fan base than the other? …show more content…
For starters, a major difference is that your average Hollywood movie does not have dancing and singing in EVERY MOVIE unless you are thinking about High School Musical. Most of the Bollywood films that come out are heavy emotions, comedy, action, romance, or suspense. Bollywood movies most probably max out Hollywood cinemas when you talk about the release of movies. Indian celebrities and movies are a major hit in the west and give A LOT of revenue to the Indian movie theaters. Another big difference between Bollywood and Hollywood is that Bollywood makes movie stars while Hollywood makes star movies, which basically means that Bollywood films make celebrities more known while Hollywood movies try to get to the top of the …show more content…
Hollywood or Bollywood? You cannot look an answer on which film industry is better because this all comes from opinion. In my opinion, I would think that Bollywood is a lot better than Hollywood because I love the songs that come with the movies, and the plot lines of the movies. My parents are from Guyana, so our religion is Hinduism. It doesn’t mean we speak Hindi or eat Indian food, but when it comes to Bollywood films, it becomes serious. Guyana families absolutely LOVE Bollywood films! At weddings, we dance to mainly the Indian songs that come from the movies. Bollywood movies are so catchy and amazing. Yes, most of the movies are all about romance, all the movies have some romance, but they do also focus on other genres, like comedy, action, horror, and so much more. Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, probably is the biggest and most popular film that a lot of people would know about, not only in India but also in America. The movie is about a rich family son who falls in love with a girl who isn’t as wealthy as him. And when he tells his father that he wants to marry her, he disowns him and says that he does not count him as his child anymore. A few years later, the younger son, goes to find his brother who had been disowned and brings him back into the family. Yes, Hollywood films have several movies that don’t really focus on romance, but I really think that so many people are hooked onto Indian movies because of
Sunset Boulevard directed by Billy Wilder in 1950 is based on how Norma Desmond, a huge Hollywood star, deals with her fall from fame. The film explores the fantasy world in which Norma is living in and the complex relationship between her and small time writer Joe Gillis, which leads to his death. Sunset Boulevard is seen as lifting the ‘face’ of the Hollywood Studio System to reveal the truth behind the organisation. During the time the film was released in the 1950s and 60s, audiences started to see the demise of Hollywood as cinema going began to decline and the fierce competition of television almost proved too much for the well established system. Throughout this essay I will discuss how Sunset Boulevard represents the Hollywood Studio System, as well as exploring post war literature giving reasons as to why the system began to crumble.
Describe some ways in which business values and artistic values in Hollywood contend with one another.
The end of the civil war should’ve marked a major turning point for the position of African Americans. The north’s victory marked the end of slavery and in addition, the fourteenth and fifteenth amendment guaranteed African Americans full civil and political equality. However, the end of the civil war and the beginning of the reconstruction era was seen a ‘false dawn for the slaves in the former confederacy and border states.
Film makers use many historical events to spark up and idea for a movie. One historical event that is commonly used is war. One advantage a film maker has when using war as a movie plot is that there is already a lot of drama in war. This may seem like a good advantage for the film maker, however focusing on all of the drama of war leaves much of the actual info. When watching a war movie, you may feel like you have an understanding about the war, but when you really compare a war movie to an actual war you find that there is a lot of factual information left out. One may ask why would directors and film makers leave out the facts of war and focus on the drama? After reading The Faces of Battle by John Keegan and reviewing war movies such as Saving Private Ryan, and Pearl Harbor, one can clearly see what makes the Hollywood version of war different from real life war.
The director yells “cut,” signaling that the scene has been finished. In an instant, the lights go dim as the actors and actresses disperse among the set to get their makeup and hair redone. Presumably, no other world could embrace the lights, camera, and action as well as Hollywood. One of the most well known places in California, Hollywoodland, was founded by Harvey Henderson Wilcox and his wife in 1853. In Hollywoodland, movies and films were produced for the public. After the sign was established in 1923, it was neglected, which led to the disrepair of the letters. The last four letters were taken off in 1943 as it is now known today as “Hollywood” (“History of Hollywood, California”). Los Angeles,
Indeed, Hollywood has been around for a great amount of time. Since the early 1900s to the present day, it’s managed to survive because of its ability to evolve following the different generations of filmmakers and societal trends. However, there is one constant in the industry’s adapting nature, and that is its poor treatment
The term bollywood comes from a genre of film that originated in India. Up until 1931, films were silent. Once sound came to the big screen, Bombay production studios wanted to take advantage of the opportunity. The studio began to produce a series of movies commonly referred to as Bollywood (Bombay combined with Hollywood). These films were often energetic musicals,
Over the years, Bollywood has emerged as its own distinct identity in the global film industry. Bollywood is the global leader in production of movies with a staggering 27,000 featured films and thousands of short films. (Pillania 1) However, Hollywood is still the leader in revenue generated. Due to the growth of the Indian market and globalization, Bollywood has made its way to the international markets.
This essay explains the journey of Bollywood (Indian Film Industry) and how it has changed itself and its audience’s perspective on Hindi Cinema. Applying the key features from Dennis McQuail’s “Normative Theory”, the relationship between Bollywood and the audience, controlled by the censorship board will be explained; and how both, the Bollywood industry and Censor Board are responsible for bringing changes to each other in the terms of rules, regulations, audience’s attitudes and their demands, in every period of time. According to McQuail (2010), a normative theory is adopted to clear the confusion prevailing in the information industry, that has become self-centred in modern days; and also to examine if the information created is to serve own self or the government. There have been endless debates by the contrasting individual ideas on how the media should be controlled from displaying unethical contents, and normative theory helps in guiding the individuals (theorists, writers, society and general public) to produce suggestions and ideas that media should follow, for the benefit of society and media (McQuail, 2010). The Indian Film Industry was established in 1913 but began to be known in 1920 (Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, 2010). Bollywood, since then, was and is still controlled by the censor board, however the censor board went through a few transformations, from being independently owned by police heads of every region, to Bombay Board of Film Censors, and finally to the Central Board of Film Censors in 1952 (Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, 2010). Cinema rules were reedited in 1983 and the censor board was re-named to the Central board of Film Certification (Indian Ministr...
Hollywood is known to be the home of the movie industry, but why is that so? Because of the increase of movie popularity, industries wanted to create better conditioned and more comfortable theater places for attraction purposes. Year-round outdoor filming was originally based in New York and Chicago, but their weather conditions only allowed use for a portion of the year. So, many companies attempted to look for different locations with better/warmer conditions such as Texas, Florida, etc. but the most successful places they found was Hollywood. Not only did it provide year-round warm weather, but it also had close, easy access to natural, unique landscapes to shoot around. This was the beginning of the iconic Hollywood movie industry. Some of the earliest and influential film companies were warner bros., paramount, 20th century fox, and more. All owning their own film studios and sets. “By 1915, more than 60 percent of U.S. film production was centered in Hollywood” (The History Of
Throughout this course on American Cinema I have really enjoyed learning about the history of Hollywood. Looking at the golden age of Hollywood during the use of the studio system makes me wish I could go back in time and visit the studios to watch movies being made. Many people in today’s world have sadly never even heard of the studio system. In this essay I will describe what the studio system is ,especially during the golden age in Hollywood, and also I will analyze and discuss some of the reasons that contributed to the downfall of this system.
Film was meant to show the traditions and customs of specific cultures to the rest of the world. However, because of Hollywood's need for a large market to sell a movie ...
Caste is one such factor in India where many controversies have been revolving around it. The notion that cinema is being developed in order to entertain people is been very critical. Films are more of political and ideological objectives. Hence, films are more biased and secure a negative position amongst the Dalits perspective during the past one century of the film world. Caste as a typical reality of India is a fact that is widely accepeted but it has been given a negative approach by the Bollywood film makers.

There are many industries and reasons why woman are still looked down upon on. One of the industries being Cinema, The cinema over the years has only portrayed the image of woman as being in the house doing the chores or being dominated by
Our culture has been dictated by movies. Behavior, outlook, and even fashions are influenced by major motion pictures. A good film can give you a thoughtful experience like a piece of art can hand a new perspective. An age old question is derived from this; What constitutes a good film? How should a film's quality be measured? The movie industry is as volatile as music; there is no substantial way to quantify quality and it's entirely subjective. What I consider a studio's magnum opus could be a schmuck you write off as, “Worse than Uwe Boll.”
