In history for 2014 we learned numerous things. Such as “Westward Expansion” and “Industrial Expansion”. The time periods expand all the way from early 1800’s to the 1940’s. We’ve learned about the presidents and the people and we were more focused on how it reflects today’s time. But in the Westward Expansion, President Thomas Jefferson made the “Louisiana Purchase” which doubled the size of the United States. The purchase consisted of the west side of the mississippi river. Families of pioneers Started to go westward and found new communities throughout what is now the Midwest, and between 1816 and 1821, six new states were admitted to the Union. many new uses for natural resources such as Steel, gold, and coal. There were businesses popping up such as Carnegie Steel. Companies needed these refined materials to build things such as the railroad tracks, and the steel was of such a high quality you can still find some Carnegie steel items. But with all this work coming up the immigration skyrocketed. In immigration most people traveled to the U.S.
by steam ships. The conditions on the boat were not the best, there was plenty of death and sickness. There were two main islands that we drop immigrants off for citizenship on the east coast was the Ellis Islands and on the west coast was the Angel Islands. They did a physical examination for sickness and such then they inspected their documents and with all these new workers we soon moved to the progressive era. In the Progressive era we had plenty of technological advances such as engines and fabrications. But there was a huge problem with child labor, owners used children because they were cheaper and they could get their tiny hands into tight places. Which caused plenty of injuries. So this was soon outlawed. The progressive era was between 1890’s through the early 1920’s which is near the time the United States went into World War 1. In 1917 the United States joined into World War 1 with the allies which are Britain, France, and Russia against the central powers. In which the allies won. The Central Powers surrendered on November 11, 1918. And all of the came the roaring twenties then the great
depression. In the 1920’s there were plenty of changes such as the “flappers” and new inventions such as automobiles and fridges and other home appliances. And many people bought all these new items on credit but back then it was known as the installment plan. Buying all of this on credit sent the U.S. stock market down and then came Black Tuesday. Black Tuesday was the start of the Great Depression. Which was a period of time where money was almost worthless and 25% of people were unemployed. But in came Franklin D. Roosevelt and his new deal. The New Deal was a set of bills that were used to soon get the United States out of the depression. And it worked! Some of the bills include CCC and WPA which both help the working and giving people jobs and making buildings. And there was the SSA which is better known as the Social Security Act which takes money out of every paycheck but pays you back later in life and the money is used to help people such as unemployment or people who have no money and truly need it. This basically wraps up our 2014 year. Just about everything we learned these two semesters. In total I believe we truly have learned a lot in this short amount of time. Most of which will stay with me and being able to remember. Because i believe your style of teaching is probably the best for this subject which in the before years was my least favorite/worst class I had.
From the years 1800-1850 the nation was full of battles and prosperity. Territorial expansion was a cause in most of the battles, but also gained prosperity for the nation. There were many impacts on national unity between those time periods, but the main impact was territorial expansion. This is true because of the Louisiana Purchase, the purchase of Oregon territory, and the Mexican War.
During the 1920's America experienced an increase like no other. With the Model T car, the assembly line, business skyrocketed. Thus, America's involvement in World War II did not begin with the attack on Pearl Harbor. Starting in October 1929, the Great Depression, the stock market crashed. It awed a country used to the excesses of the 1920's.
Expansion of a nation was nothing new in terms of history. The fighting, buying and selling of land in North America was a common event during the 1800s. The United States had started expanding in 1803 with President Thomas Jefferson’s purchase of the Louisiana Territory whose borders where not clearly defined. After the War of 1812 with the British, the northern border of this territory was defined at the 49th parallel. Then in 1819, Spain sold its claim to Florida to the United States. The United States wanted to continue to expand itself westward to the Pacific Ocean, a territory then owned by Mexico. The acquirement of this territory occurred after the Mexican War. How the territory was acquired by the United States is the topic in question.
After World War I, America was going through an uplifting time of good fortune and prosperity. This period of freedom, known as The Roaring Twenties was a time for fun and disobeying rules. The 1920s brought new and exciting things to American culture. Music, entertainment, pop culture, and fads were greatly impacted during this time in history. The effects of each of these areas still influences America today.
From the year 1900 to 1920, Progressive Era reformers were successful in bringing about reform to the United States in many ways. With the addition of various acts and laws to the United States, the reformers successfully improved the lives of the workingman. Not only that, they also made the United States more technologically advanced. With such groundbreaking inventions as the Model T, and the first aircraft, much reform was brought upon the United States as a whole, at a national level. Throughout these two decades, much development took place in the United States, and much more was on its way.
The Progressive Era was a period in which the federal government increased its legislation and its grasp of the nation. There were three distinct pieces of federal legislation that seem to stick out, The Meat Inspection Act The Federal Reserve Act,, and The Hepburn Act. All of this legislation gave the government an extremely large amount of power to regulate business and industry as well as the people of the United States of America.
World War I may not have made the world safe for democracy, but it did help to lay the groundwork for a decade of American economic expansion. The war began in Europe in 1914, and the United States entered the fray in 1917. The 1920s saw the growth of the culture of consumerism. A significant reason for United States involvement in the war was the nation’s economic links to the Allied Powers, and especially to Great Britain. American soldiers returned home in May 1919 with the promise of a prosperous decade (Baughman 197).
By the time period of 1900-1920 America was almost fully industrialized. At this time, America was going through a Gilded Age where everything looked good on the outer perspective however on the inside, there were many issues within society. The Progressive Era consisted of people who wanted to reform society politically, socially, and economically. Progressive reformers and the federal government were successful in bringing about reform at the national level by gaining some women's rights as well as African Americans trying to better their reputation in society, improving working conditions, and fixing the American economy.
How do you see progress, as a process that is beneficial or in contrast, that it´s a hurtful process that everyone at one point of their lives has to pass through it? At the time, progress was beneficial for the United States, but those benefits came with a cost, such cost that instead of advancements and developments being advantageous factors for humanity, it also became a harmful process in which numerous people were affected in many facets of life. This all means that progress is awsome to achieve, but when achieved, people have to realize the process they had to do to achieve it, which was stepping on other people to get there.
The early twentieth century acted as the Progressive Era, when Americans found solutions to resolve problems that were engendered by industrialization. Predicated on the documents, Progressive Era was effective because of child labor, working conditions, and women's suffrage. Factories were utilizing children to do the hard work. They employed children as young as five or six to work as many as twenty hours a day. According to Document C, children worked in factories to build up muscles and have good intellect in working rather than getting an education.
Reformers known as Progressives attempted to undo the problems caused by industrialization. The Progressive movement sought to end the influence of large corporations, provide more rights and benefits to workers, and end the control possessed by party leaders. At the national level, Progressivism centered on defeating the power of large businesses. The Progressive Era was a period in American history in which improving working conditions, exposing corruption, improving the way of life, expanding democracy, and making reforms were the objectives at hand. With the emergence of the Progressive Era, two important figures gradually emerged as well.
On December 31, 1890 a transition in history occured. New York City would start a new era in the history of the United States starting with the opening of Ellis Island as an immigration depo. This attracted many immigrants to the United Stated because of more job opportunities and as means to start a new life. As more immigrants came to America, it began to be known as the "land of opportunities". Immigrants coming in filled work spaces in industries with the hopes of someday becoming successful. These immigrants helped prove to other future immigrants that if you moved to America then you could start a better life for yourself and your families. On the other hand with positives come negatives and there were many involving immigration.
Manifest Destiny was the belief that started and caused the westward expansion and led to many wars between all different types of people and the different countries that owned the land. The expansion allowed for lifespan to increase, the economy blossomed, and the main goal was accomplished which was getting occupation of America from ocean coast to ocean coast.
In “There is no True History of Westward Expansion”, by Robert Morgan, he argues that history is inaccurate, history only names the famous people or actions which happened in history. He accurately states in his text that history is made up of heroes, villains, and also average citizens. This viewpoint is true because the more that is examined about history the more that is discovered. Other texts give support , such as,“Thomas Jefferson’s America, 1801” by Stephen Ambrose, “Reporting to the President, September 23- December 31, 1806” by Stephen Ambrose, and “American Progress” by John Gast, to Morgan’s idea that history is not made up of just hero and villains.
The Progressive Era movement was all about destroying the Unites States government and reforming the society. At that time the children were all preferred as workers, many kids didn't really understand and they can’t control the situations. Their owners tricked the children by giving them a small amount of salary and made them work all day. The children worked in dangerous and dark factories, many deaths and injuries occurred, but people think that children are the best choice to be workers because all people believed that children are in a small size so it's easier for them to get into small places and work better. Children worked long hours in dark and dangerous factories for some little money only. The children often worked to help and support their families, they all lived a very poor lifestyle. Children didn't only work on the family farm but were often hired out for other farmers. The people’s goal was to end child labor and offer free education for all kids, most children did not have freedom and were forced to do the things they hated. The poor families who just moved from farmlands to cities had no other choice but to make their children work for extra money.
