In “There is no True History of Westward Expansion”, by Robert Morgan, he argues that history is inaccurate, history only names the famous people or actions which happened in history. He accurately states in his text that history is made up of heroes, villains, and also average citizens. This viewpoint is true because the more that is examined about history the more that is discovered. Other texts give support , such as,“Thomas Jefferson’s America, 1801” by Stephen Ambrose, “Reporting to the President, September 23- December 31, 1806” by Stephen Ambrose, and “American Progress” by John Gast, to Morgan’s idea that history is not made up of just hero and villains. In the bottom and right-hand corner of his painting it shows American settlers in the west. It shows the settlers farming and making westward expansion possible. It also shows the settlers moving to the west and trying to make a home there. Gast doesn’t paint Thomas Jefferson or Lewis, he proves that the citizens were apart of westward expansion. This gives support to Morgan’s statement that history is made up of heroes and villains but also the citizens. It proves that some history books are inaccurate. On the other hand, there are many people and historians that don’t agree with Morgan’s claim that history is inaccurate. In “Chief Joseph Speaks…”by Chief Joseph, he states, “White men had found gold in the mountains around the land of the Winding Water.” This is letting people know that the white men are the ones who found the gold. Joseph doesn’t mention specific names of the white men who found the gold. He mentions just the regular citizens. Because of this many historians say that history is accurate, and includes the
