Team Sports vs Individual Sports Which is more beneficial, team sports or individual sports? When comparing team and individual sports, most people do not realize how easy it is to pick out the similarities and differences the two have. Individual and team sports have the same main purpose, but the motivation, competitiveness, and life skills set them apart. In athletics, most athletes set goals for themselves, whether it is a personal goal or a team goal. It is pretty easy to set a goal, but the person setting the goal may never reach it without motivation. Team sports motivation is a little different from individual sports motivation. All athletes, no matter a team or an individual are competitive. Although all athletes are competitive, the meaning of competitiveness is more aggressive and more meaningful to team sports. Team sports athletes rely on other teammates to decide how competitive they are by having different levels of competition. Varsity level teams have a certain number of players on the team; depending on the sport, athletes then have to work hard and fight for a position to make the team. Individual athletes still compete in games and matches depending on the sport, but they do not have to worry about fighting for a position on a “team” like group sports do. Sports such as golf and cross-country still compete to win when it comes to a game or match. By not having any competition during practice, individual sport athletes can slack off because they do not have anyone that makes them want to fight for the position. Team sports practice being competitive against each other just as if teams would against their competitors; making the team work harder and become better. After playing sports on a team for so many years, not only does it make you more competitive for sports, but also for later in life. Athletes in times of difficulty can be important role models.” This shows that sports are in fact helpful because they can grow children into being important role models for the rest of society. Studies have shown time and time again that playing sports can be beneficial to children and we also believe this to be true. Many people still think that sports cause “too many injuries”, or coaches “are not fair enough”, but adolescents will experience these things all throughout their lives because injury can happen anywhere and they will not always be the best at what they are doing. Sports are beneficial to the youth because they can teach children and teens important life skills, help them maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle, all while improving their mental health.

Fun and other preferences for adolescents’ sport participation” claims that fun, social aspects, masculinity, and identity are the main reasons youth participate in sports (Skille and Østera˚ s, 360). Oftentimes, athletes forget they are on the same team, and they start to form cliques or groups based around who has the best bench press or 40 meter dash time. As a result, teammates start to compete with each other instead of working towards the same goal. For instance, one coaching journal article claims that “moral reasoning” in youth is determined through “collective norms” or group behaviors that the coach has a hand in influencing (Shields, LaVoi, Bredemeier, Power, 748-749). A proper coaching environment should therefore revolve around a fun, supportive, and collective environment where success is encouraged through the full support of the team. Sports specialization among young people is when a child or teenager trains for and competes in only one sport. They work extremely hard year-round in order to become well-rounded in every aspect of the game. They make sacrifices and put their health in jeopardy in order to become the ultimate participant in their sport. One of the many young athletes who is only participating in and focusing on one sport is fifteen-year-old OJ Mayo from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the young talented athlete who is predicted to be the next LeBron James in the National Basketball Association (NBA). This young athlete provides evidence of striving for perfection in this single sport when reviewing his daily schedule versus that of his siblings. He says, “The other kids go home and sleep. I come back to the gym” (Thompson, 2004). He is obviously putting forth a lot of effort in his sport to become successful at an early age.
