Deviance and Cyberbullying Deviance is perceived as an action that steps outside cultural norms. It is a form of nonconformity. This is not inherently bad as deviant behavior can sometimes spark cultural movements against accepted norms which may need to be reevaluated. However, deviance often takes the form of criminal and malicious behavior. The french sociologist, David Émile Durkheim, viewed deviant behavior as an inevitable, but also necessary evil. He proposed that crime in particular in some ways served to benefit and improve a functional society. According to Durkheim, deviance can clarify the social norms and boundaries within society. Criminal actions can also unite members of society against common enemies. This promotes social cohesions and instigates progress and maturity between individuals in a social environment. Social interaction on the internet is a relatively new phenomenon in history. The internet itself is a rapidly developing system in terms of content and interfaces. As a result, the cultural norms that exist online are fluctuating and not set in stone as compared to offline interaction. Cyberbullying usually occurs on popular social media websites such as facebook, but it can also take place on video streaming sites, forums, and blogs. This trend is becoming an increasingly more prevalent issue that is rapidly gaining attention from people who previously never even knew it even existed. Some would argue that cyberbullying is in many worse than traditional offline bullying because of its consistency and prevalent invasiveness towards the victim.
