The leadership development goal is to develop nursing communication skills that attributes to being a great leader. With these effective communication skills, the plan is to provide nursing education with regards to health promotion and advocacy. These communication skills are especially needed when communicating with vulnerable populations such as school age children. Since the target populations in this project are adolescents, it is important to cultivate leadership skills. These skills include patience, empathy, flexibility, honesty and active involvement. “Communication is the heart of nursing… your ability to use your growing knowledge and yourself as an instrument of care and caring and compassion” (Koerner, 2010, as cited in Balzer-Riley, 2012, p. 2). The knowledge base which Koerner is referring to includes important concepts such as communication, assertiveness, responsibility and caring (Balzer-Riley, 2012). Furthermore, communication is complex. It includes communication with patients, patient families, doctors, co-workers, nurse managers and many others. Due to those concepts and the variety of people involved, barriers and issues are present. Knowing how to communicate efficiently can be difficult.
They are influenced by their family of origin, their education, their work experience, and the people they interact with. For Ms. Eckert this has all brought her to her current career position and approach to leadership. She holds leadership not only as the challenge and difficult task that many people today see it as. She also views it as an amazing opportunity to influence others. Ms. Eckert also noted the importance of coaching others, both in their nursing development, and in their leadership potential. This is particularly important as we are facing rapid change within the nursing field. There should be a certain amount of mentorship to learn from those who have experience and to develop one’s own skill. For Ms. Eckert some of the main elements she discussed as contributing to a strong leader are the willingness to coach others, emotional intelligence, a sense of spirituality, valuing diversity, and openness to change and innovation. It should then be the hope of future nurses to emulate this idea of leadership and personal growth as members of the healthcare

Leadership is defined by Northouse (2013) as a transactional experience between persons whereby one individual influences a group of individuals who have a mutual goal. Leaders may hold authority attributed to them by the group, substantiated by how they are regarded, whether or not they have positional authority. In contrast to management, where the goal is to provide order through control, leadership is concerned with producing change through transformation and practical adjustments (Northouse, 2013). Because of the nature of nursing, its obligation to promoting health and healing of people, nursing leadership concentrates change efforts based on human needs and concurrently ponders the needs of administrations largely because they understand the interrelatedness of the two influences.
Communication involves the exchange of messages and is a process which all individuals participate in. Whether it is through spoken word, written word, non-verbal means or even silence, messages are constantly being exchanged between individuals or groups of people (Bach & Grant 2009). All behaviour has a message and communication is a process which individuals cannot avoid being involved with (Ellis et al 1995).
Recognizing that communication is the cornerstone of the nurse-patient relationship, an argument can be made that nurses must be truthful in order to communicate effectively with their patient; violating that principle shows a lack of respect for themselves as well at the patient (Burkhardt & Nathaniel, 2014, p 73). Knowing this information nurses and patients alike can either choose to trust their health care professional or not. Once the patient determines that the health care provider can be trusted they are more willing to share intimate details that may otherwise never be divulged. Trust and responsibility are the reasons regardless of the situation that nurses must advocate for the patients they are caring for and promote wellness. Patients must feel that their confidentiality is intact and that their rights should be respected a major ethical principle.
Marquis describes a leader as the motivation and the leading of the performance. Leader’s uniqueness and abilities are what make others to need to take after his or her way (2009 p.32). First, a leader must understand the self and others as the beginning in leading. As Kouzes and Posner stated “self-discovery and self-awareness are critical to developing the capacity to lead. And personal reflection and analysis of one’s own leadership behaviors are core components in that process” (2011, p. 13). In health care, the nursing leaders hold a vital role in inspiring, empowering, coaching, and supporting the nursing profession to engage with today 's changes in the healthcare. Importantly, the nursing leader’s priority is to advocate for the patients’ care by role modeling to the team on delivering a safe and quality care. Nurses today need to have excellent communication skills. Receiving information from patients is the most important aspect of nursing. If nurses are unable to communicate with their patient then they would not be able to have a relationship with them. Communication is where two or more people interact with each other, by using sounds and words, this is verbal communication. Some individuals have different behaviors where they try to express themselves to others without using spoken words, this is non verbal communication. Once nurses have the proper communication tools, techniques and evidence based practice, when communicating with their patient, they would get the necessary information needed from the patient to properly diagnosis them.

Introduction: Poor hand hygiene, the absence of therapeutic communication and the disregard of patients’ privacy, dignity and confidentiality are the three issues that will be discussed in this assignment. Poor hand hygiene can lead to transmission of bacteria or containments from one person or object to another. This transmission can lead to patients or yourself becoming ill. The absence of therapeutic communication can lead to miscommunication between a patient and nurse. This can then have a significant impact on the care the patient receives and the overall patient experience.
Another quality of a great nurse leader is the empowerment of their subordinates. “One way that leaders empower subordinates is when they delegate assignments to provide learning opportunities and allow employees to share in the satisfaction derived from achievement” (Maquis, Huston, 2017, p. 330). A nurse leader empowers staff through opportunities for growth and self-improvement. This is applicable through finding the employees opportunities to obtain new certifications, attend classes that the hospital offers, and providing incentives for self-improvement in these areas (Marquis, Huston, 2017, p. 335). Another characteristic of a professional nurse leader is that they are open to opinions, ideas, and criticism of subordinates and peers.
When deciding the focused topic, it was chosen and narrowed down to how health care professionals maintain effective communication for patients with dementia in a nursing home setting within the topic of respect and dignity. Communication is an important part of nursing practice, with in the code under the domain practice effectively its states that nurses must communicate clearly and respond to an individual’s communication needs, providing help and assistance where needed using a range of communication skills such as verbal, nonverbal methods, taking in consideration a person’s ethnic and culture background, ensuring that the person has clearly understood the information received.
