Determination is like a sword. It can be used to protect oneself but if not wielded correctly, efficiently, or often, one can wind up being unprepared for the conflicts the world will throw at them. This is perfectly represented in the movie The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (LOTR) by Peter Jackson. Jackson shows the significance of determination through the actions of Gandalf, the Ring, and Gollum.
The first character that shows determination is Gandalf. Throughout the course of his journey in LOTR, he shows that he can persevere despite the differing opinions of those around him. When Frodo spots a creature lurking in a cave below them in the Mines of Moria, he asks Gandalf what the creature is. Gandalf replies stating that it is Gollum - a creature that has been corrupted by the Ring’s power - and that he had been following them for three days. Gollum’s perseverance lasts the length of the entire film. He follows the Fellowship throughout their journey, until he gets captured by Saruman’s forces. Saruman then tortures him macabrely in order to get the location of the Ring from him. However, Gollum is determined to keep the location to himself for as long as he can, so he fights against the punishment he receives. Eventually he gives in, telling Saruman two words: “Baggins”, and “Shire”. It is important for viewers to understand what Peter Jackson is attempting to portray using the character Gollum. Through the creature, Jackson shows that humanity too often capitulates to iniquities that destroy their quality of life.
