A dream or aspiration is a desire that people wish to achieve in their life just as badly as they want to breathe. There are many human beings all over the world chasing their ambition, although it’s not easy. Many people give up early on their dreams and fail to succeed once things become too difficult. However, individuals that fail to succeed do not live their dreams, they live their fears. These individuals are afraid of failure, hope, themselves, and unfortunately their dream becomes impossible to pursue. On the other hand, the individuals that become successful are the people who believe in themselves because when life knocks a dreamer down they must get right back up and continue to strive to reach their full potential. The novel The …show more content…
Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and the song Believe by Justin Bieber both portray the determination required to overcome the barriers that stand in the way of fulfilling dreams and goals. In order to strive for success an individual must possess confidence, determination, and have no fear when climbing the ladder in pursuit of achieving a dream.
In the novel, the main character Santiago faces many obstacles when working hard to fulfill his Personal Legend, teaching the reader that anything is possible if one sets their mind and heart to it. Similarly, in the song Justin Bieber’s Believe inspires people to never stop believing in themselves and their dreams no matter the circumstances. When striving for a dream, it’s important for people to possess the quality of courage. Courage is the power that enables people to have confidence when facing difficulty, danger, and pain, without fear. Ultimately, every human being has courage in them but not everyone knows it’s there. In The Alchemist, Fatima showed courage by letting the love of her life, Santiago go on in pursuit of his dreams knowing that if she was really a part of …show more content…
Santiago’s dream, he’d come back one day. Now Fatima fears nothing because it was the omens that brought Santiago to her. Fatima states, “I’m a desert woman, and I’m proud of that. I want my husband to wander as free as the wind that shapes the dunes. And if I have to, I will accept the fact that he has become a part of the clouds, and the animals and the water of the desert (Pg.98).” However, Fatima learns to not hold her loved one back from pursuing his dreams and instead, awaits for his return because if the man she loves doesn’t return, she will then realize it was not true love. If that is the case, Fatima knows that she must be patient and wait for the man that she deserves who will treat her right and love her endlessly. Similarly, in the song Believe, Justin Bieber sings about pushing through hardships and teaching himself and others to have belief and courage within them when following dreams. “I don’t know how I got here I knew it wouldn’t be easy.” Therefore, courage is an important element that one must possess to be successful. However, many people think that only certain types of human beings have courage but don’t realize that it’s in everyone. Courage is facing your fears and not being afraid to take risks when pursuing one’s true desire. Courage can become while overcoming the little things along the way. Although everyone possesses courage, one must find it within them and capture it. –strengthen challenges Determination is a key attribute for those who work hard in hopes of fulfilling ones true desire.
However, determination is the will and power that an individual holds within them in order to strive for what they’ve always wished to accomplish in their life. In addition, determination is to simply not give up no matter how many times a person falls. It’s getting back up and working through your uphill battles. In the novel, Santiago showed determination when he got his money robbed in Tangier by an individual whom he trusted and thought was once his friend. Therefore, part of Santiago wanted to end his journey and go back to being a shepherd in Spain but the other part of him wanted to continue to fulfill his dream and find his treasure that lies at the pyramids of Egypt. Pursuing this further, while having the strength of determination Santiago chose to continue his journey, and work his hardest with the drive to push through difficult times, reaching for his goal. The author states, “But all this happened for one basic reason: no matter how many detours and adjustments it made, the caravan moved toward the same compass point. Once obstacles were overcome, it returned to its course, sighting on a star that indicated the location of the oasis.” Furthermore, this teaches the reader that people will always encounter obstacles and detours, but once an individual perseveres through it with determination, those individuals continue back on track with the drive to achieve their
Personal Legend. Moreover, Justin Bieber states, “Cause everything starts from something but something would be nothing, nothing if your heart didn’t dream.” Everyone has a purpose for life, but not everyone have realized their destiny. People must recognize, remain focused, and have determination to strive for what it is that they would like to accomplish in life. Therefore, determination is among one of the most important qualities a person can bear. On the other hand, not everyone in life is determined. People that are not determined are the individuals that are unsure about what it is they want to strive for. In addition, some individuals are content with what they have in life and choose to not drive for success in what they truly dream of accomplishing because of their fear of failure. However, to become determined people must know exactly what they want to pursue and push them self to succeed each day. Besides that, individuals must have faith in themselves and their dream, knowing that anything is possible if one sets their mind to it. Nevertheless, determination is something that makes the life of a dreamer successful. Without it, people do not have the drive to achieve great things or better themselves. On the contrary, during Santiago’s expedition he was determined to fulfill his dream and worked past the many difficulties that arose along his path to success. Ultimately, by being determined
Dreams are there to make the illusion of the impossible, you must always strive to do the impossible. Two people have shown that it is possible to achieve the impossible, and those two people are Althea Gibson and Barbara Jordan, and those two people had done their absolute best to make sure that they make it, and to make sure they make they succeed in life. In the article Althea Gibson and Barbara C. Jordan, both written by Frank Lafe They were both faced with obstacles that didn't want them to succeed, they had dreams that had seemed impossible for them to be able to achieve at that time. Both of them had different environments that affected their future, the environments around people affect the person too. All of those describe the lives
Dreams prove as a powerful, motivating force, propelling an individual forward into real achievements in life. Conversely, dreams can transpire as blatantly artificial. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “Winter Dreams” depicts the story of Dexter Green, a young man who dreams of achievements and works hard in a real, non-illusionary world to win them. His work in this plain, unromantic world brings him ever closer to the dream world he so desperately wants, while at the same time the dreams show themselves as decaying or empty. Unfortunately, this does not cure him of dreaming and does not push him to abandon his dreams in favor of a healthier attitude.
When wanting to accomplish something in life, there will be a decision that will affect the outcome of leading to the right path. It will either help in achieving the goal that was made or take it further away from being able to accomplish it. In the novel “The Alchemist” written by Paulo Coelho, is about a young boy named Santiago. He is a shepherd wanting to travel with his sheep all around in doing so he goes through the experience called "The Hero’s Journey”. The Hero’s Journey are stages taken to accomplish your Personal Legend which is a goal you want to get accomplish in life. He also goes through stages in the journey that help him overcome any challenges he faces. They also bring him closer to the end of completing
The knowledge and universal understanding derivative from a journey can leave the traveller positively enlightened. In Coelho’s story, Santiago is faced with recurring dreams which lead him to ‘’traverse the unknown’’ in search of a treasure buried in Egypt, the metaphor for universal connection, and in doing so, comes to the unrelenting realisation of spiritual transcendence. After arriving at the assumed geographical location of the treasure ‘’several figures approached him’’. They demand the boy keep searching for this treasure as they are poor refugees and in need of money, but as Santiago does, he finds nothing. Then, after relentless digging through the night ‘’as the sun rose, the men began to beat the boy’’ , finally relenting with the truth, Santiago reveals his dreams to the travellers. In doing so, Santiago finds out that these men had also been faced with recurring dreams measured around the place where the boy had undergone his own, both relative to hidden treasure. However the leader was ‘’not so stupid as to cross an entire desert just because of a recurrent dream’’. It is with this fact, tha...
First of all, the author shows that through persevering through adversity anyone can achieve their dreams. During the book Santiago continuously faces problems that he will have to overcome to achieve his Personal Legend. In this scenario, Santiago is in the city of Tangier when he is suddenly robbed of all of his money, by a thief who promised to take him to Egypt. However instead of thinking of himself as a victim of a thief he decides that “I’m an adventurer, looking for treasure” (34). Santiago was able to persevere through a situation that many people would not have been able to overcome and not able to continue their journey. Being able to persevere through
Santiago is a young boy who fits into the flawed hero archetype. His story tells of his journey to find his Personal Legend and the many new people and experiences he encounters. Santiago is flawed in the way that he does not have enough confidence in himself to complete the task set out in front of him. He is constantly putting himself off track and avoiding what he has to do. In the beginning of his journey, he faces a setback and his money gets stolen. While finding a solution and a job, he gets distracted loses sight of his dreams. A couple months into the job, he thinks, “...Egypt was now just as distant a dream as was Mecca for the merchant…” (Coelho 58) and he glorifies his new plan to “disembark at Tarifa as a winner” (Coelho 58) with his improved flock of sheep. However, he continues his journey two years later, despite his break in confidence. When Santiago reaches the Oasis during his journey across the desert, he gets sidetracked once more by a woman. This woman’s name is Fatima. The second time they meet Santiago speaks without thinking and says, “‘I came to tell you just one thing...I want you to be my wife. I love you.’” (Coelho 98). This alone demonstrates his rash actions of an inexperienced hero who causes his dreams to be postponed. However, Santiago is also a successful hero despite his flaws. He still continues his journey, no matter what, and eventually reaches his goal. Even through
“All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.” This quote from Walt Disney addressing the concept of achieving dreams is very accurate, and can be seen throughout literature today and in the past. Dreams can give people power or take away hope, and influence how people live their lives based upon whether they have the determination to attack their dreams or not; as seen through characters like the speaker in Harlem by Langston Hughes and Lena and Walter Younger in Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in The Sun.
One of Santiago’s first and most impactful teachers were his flock of sheep. Even though they could not speak to Santiago, they still shaped him into the person he was and ended up being. The lessons that the sheep taught Santiago were through his observation of the flock. “Once again he saw that, in the strange land, he was applying the same lessons he had learned with his sheep.” The prior quote shows that the lessons that the flock unintentionally taught Santiago stuck with him throughout his journey to find his personal legend. Some of the lessons that Santiago learned from his sheep were to treasure his independence and how simplicity and minimality was not always the best ways to live life. Santiago learned to treasure his independence through his sheep because while he was crossing the desert, he observed that the sheep would die without him and that he was their only lifeline. By this observation he came to value the fact that he is independent and does not live his life depending on another being to aid him in life. He learned that simplicity is not always key by observing the way his flocked lived. He noticed that the sheep only required the basic necessities, food, water, shelter, and sleep. He made the connection that the sheep are still alive off those basic needs, but that they are living on the most minimal amount possible. Santiago realized that he
Another is simply the hope of survival, as shown in the book Lord of the Flies. Whatever the dream, the most interesting thing that can be read or written about it is the drive of people to attain it. This is best shown in The Great Gatsby. The Pursuit of the American Dream in The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby,a novel by F,Scott Fitzgerald,is about the American Dream, and the downfall of the people who try to reach it. The American Dream means something different to different people, but in The Great Gatsby, for Jay Gatsby, the subject of the book, the dream is that through acquiring wealth and power, one can also gain happiness.
A dream is a deep ambition and desire for something; everybody tries to reach their dreams no matter how far away they may seem. The characters in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s stories strive for nothing less than “The Great American Dream”. This is the need to be the best of the best, top of the social ladder, and to be happier and more successful than anyone has been before. Fitzgerald writes about this American Dream that every character has but can never achieve; the dream is kept unattainable due to obstacles, the disadvantages of being low on the social ladder, and also the restrictions of having a high social status.
The Theme of “The Alchemist,” by Paulo Coelho is, always follow your dreams and listen to your heart. At the start of the novel Santiago does not know what he should do when he is confronted by his dream. But by the end of the novel Santiago completely trusts his heart to guide him though life. Santiago’s story shows him learning and living out the theme of the novel.
Fear is an emotion that negatively influences people to shy away from their plans. Throughout the novel, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, many characters are overcome with fear and more specifically, the fear of loss and fear of the future. Coelho repeatedly shows that by conquering these fears, people are freed from the bounds of fear and therefore willing to take action on their dreams.
The Alchemist conveyed the up-most truthful meaning of santiago’s personal legend by teaching him the soul of the earth. This stage helped santiago and the Alchemist are talking doing what your personal legend is and also doing exactly what your personal legend desires are when they speak in terms of listening to one’s heart. “Whenever your heart is, that is where you’ll find your treasure. Santiago takes initiative on his dreams and pursue them regardless of love affairs and the hurt that comes along with it. The stage encouraged and also motivated santiago to find his treasure and make a better life for fatima and
El Zayat 1 Rami El Zayat Mrs. E. Fernandez EAE2D-02 June 12th 2018 TITLE OF THE ESSAY Throughout time, us humans have learned to make links between things, for example a tooth brush, and toothpaste. We have a mind that allows us to mend things together and put the pieces of the puzzle together. As we learn more and more, we learn to make links between new things, like bravery and knowledge.
We all have a dream, but the difference is how we realise our dream, how we obtain our dream, and how our dream changes us. This is evident in our learning of dreams and aspirations through the texts Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keys, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? by Lasse Hallström, and through my own studies of Million Dollar Baby by Clint Eastwood. These three highly acclaimed texts represent the same ideas on dreams and aspirations, which can be defined as hope, desire or the longing for a condition or achievement, but these texts express the same ideas differently, shaping our understanding of dreams and aspirations.
