Starbucks arose from the ashes of Seattle, to become arguably the most successful coffee chain in the world. Inspired by the coffee shops of Milan, Starbucks is the coffee that most people have grown up with. As a kid, my mom used to take me there as a “special treat” after the doctor's office. Each store is decorated in roughly the same fashion in order to keep continuity in over 20,000 locations. But somehow local shop owners manage to find a way to make an otherwise cookie-cutter shop unique to a specific community. Including the one on first street in downtown St. Charles, Illinois. Since the days of the Enlightenment, coffee houses have become a place for people to come together and be intellectuals. It’s a place where discussions happen and discoveries are made. The restaurant was very clean and all done up for Christmas. The menu board was advertising for their “hand-crafted” holiday drink flavors which included peppermint, eggnog, and toasted white chocolate, among others. Around the chalk drawings of these drinks were intricate snowflakes. The gift cards at the counter come in the normal varieties as well as Christmas trees and presents. Christmas mugs and tumblers were being sold on the shelves as you walked in the door. Out the large store window, you can see the lights strung on the trees outside. Over the store radio Frosty the snowman is playing. As time goes on the music alternates between classic holiday music and folksy-sounding songs. The drink comes in a cup with images of presents, Christmas trees, and people holding hands. The sleeve on the cup is bright red and reads “Give Good”. By this definition, and after knowing the effects of caffeine upon the human body, I have come to the conclusion that drinking caffeine is a sign of a lack of respect for oneself, and of an unappreciative attitude toward the life that each of us has been blessed with. As previously mentioned, energy drinks are often times served in a can. This means they are consumed alone with no communication to others. Bittersweet? why can’t we just call it coffee drink I’m grumpy and smug on a coffee table not only when breakfast, but when at Starbucks. I’m skeptic about glorifying the expensive drink. They purchased more high quality coffee beans than anyone else in the world and keep in good standings with the producers to ensure they get the best beans. Getting the best beans is only the first part, Starbucks also has a “closed loop system” that protects the beans from oxygen immediately after roasting to the time of packaging. They did this through their invention of a one-way valve which let the natural gasses escape but keeping oxygen out. This gave them the unique ability to ensure freshness and extended the shelf life to 26 weeks. Coffee is the first thing that people associate with instant energy on a groggy morning. “In the U.S., coffee is king of beverages” (Reinke) Research has been done that has named coffee as an addiction to the people who consume large quantities of it. Coffee was named the top source of antioxidants. This is partly because of the amount consumed each day. Some of the antioxidants that coffee has are quinines and chlorogenic acid. It also contains trigonelline, an antibacterial compound. This is where coffee acquires its delicious aroma. Now let’s step back for a minute and just think about how much caffeine people consume. In an 8oz cup of coffee it has about 85 milligrams of caffeine. This is about double the amount that tea contains. Studies have shown that caffeine stimulates the brain and nervous system. This is where you get that energized feeling. After about the third cup, knees start to bounce, pens are clicking and people start running laps around the office. Caffeine can become addicting if you drink too much. Coffee can become that addictive habit people are unable to shake.

Starbucks opened with two main goals, sharing great coffee with friends and to help make the world a little better. It originated in the historic Pike Place Market of Seattle, Washington in 1971 by Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl and Gordon Bowker. The creation of Starbucks’ name came from the seafaring tradition of early coffee traders and the romance evoked from Moby Dick. At the time, this individual shop specialized in the towering quality of coffee over competitors and other brewing services enabling its growth to becoming the largest coffee chain in Washington with numerous locations. In the early 1980s, the current CEO Schultz saw an opportunity for growth in the niche market. After a trip to Italy he brought back the idea of a café style environment of leisure and social meetings to the United States we now see in Starbucks locations today. Schultz ultimately left Starbucks to open his own coffee shop, Il Giornale which turned out to be a tremendous success. Fast forward a year later, Schultz got wind that Starbucks was going to sell all their components of Starbucks including their stores and factories, he immediately acquired the funds to buy Starbucks and linked both operations. Within five years he was able to open more than 125 stores starting in New England, Boston, Chicago, and gradually entered California. When I saw this discussion, I couldn’t help but think of Starbucks and the impact they’ve made throughout their 45 years of establishment. I worked with them for about 7 years and saw how unique they were from your everyday coffee and latte spots. A retail company with thousands of coffee shops in the US as well as in other countries, this particular retailer has been able to catch the eyes of all ages as well as locations throughout the world. For example, today college students utilize Starbucks locations to study rather than go to a nearby library. Starbucks is also known for its best coffee and espresso drinks (Latte or Frappuccino) and with one of its delicious espresso 's any student or just a person stopping in to enjoy its lounge area where there is free Wi-Fi is awesome! Starbucks lifecycle has made a 360 turn around and been revamped twice to accommodated the growing market. Customizing their brand to fit more in with everything and not just one thing. By doing this they’ve created multiple product lifecycles within their own lifecycle as a corporate company.
