Sanctuary Humans lead fast-paced and busy lives. It is for this reason we need time and a place to unwind and relax. Often, I take a walk and enjoy nature, but can 't always do this. My nature walks are limited by the time of the day, weather, and sometimes the time of year. It is for these reasons that my permanent sanctuary was my old bedroom back home. When I was younger, I had to share my room with my little sister. That only made it that much more special when it became solely mine. The room is of a fairly large size; it bigger than most kids bedroom. It may have once been two rooms and been remodeled. To enter, one has to walk though a wooden door with a dark finish, a rusting gold doorknob, and a faded Precious Moments decal located in the south east corner of the room. If the light were off, it would have been pitch black. Even if the lights were on, the room was pretty dim. To turn the lights on, I would have to walk across the room to the opposite wall. My chest held all of my are and craft supplies. Each drawer held specific art tools. The top drawer had miscellaneous items that didn 't quite go with the other drawers such as my soldering iron. Other drawers held paint and cosplay supplies as well as sewing equipment. The surface of my desk was covered in the paint of past projects, school papers (In theory, I was to do my homework here, but that 's hard to do when a fluff ball that is in a league with Satan himself has taken over the only chair. The closest I got to doing my homework here was storing office supplies in the bottom drawer), and sewing supplies. On the rare occasion Grimm allowed me to have my chair, I would repair the family 's torn clothing-- my little brother 's and father 's most often. When I wasn 't fixing clothing, I was making it. Cosplay is a hobby of mine and it was here at my desk that my costumes went from ideas and thoughts to
The wilderness allows people to escape the crazy hectic lives they live daily and just unwind. Chris McCandless was “ unheeded, happy, and near to the wild heart,” throughout his soul-searching journey in the wilderness (Krakauer 31). Many people like Chris will experience different sensations in the serene wilderness, however it calls
At first, the idea of escaping into nature was cumbersome. Meandering aimlessly concerned me. My mind was stained with negative thoughts of solitude and being alone first felt demoralizing, but slowly my earlier assumption dissipated, fully disappearing from the subconscious once I broke the boundary and stepped into nature. Emerson notes, “In the woods, we return to reason and faith. There I feel that nothing can befall me in life, - no disgrace, no calamity, (leaving me my eyes,) which nature cannot repair” (8). I too believe what Emerson says. In my own rush to “fit in” I dismissed my own morals accepted others as if they were my own. I put my energy into modeling myself according to the contemplation of others, all the while ignoring principles
When you look around you notice that there’s hardly any furniture in the room. There’s a nightstand, two chairs, and the bed, but other than that you don’t see much else besides a few things on the nightstand...
Sense of place is the “development of level of comfort and feelings of safety that are associated with a place” (Kopec, p. 62). These associations often translate into that desired sense of belonging, and allow individuals the ability to “develop feelings of attachment to particular settings based on combinations of use, attractiveness, and emotion” (Stokowski, 2002). Developing these psychological connections with certain places lends itself to the concept of place attachment, or, “a person’s bond with the social and physical environments of a place” (Kopec, p. 62). These places often hold deep meaning for people because their identities were established among their surroundings. This affiliation between a person and their place is often seen through personal connection, comfort, and security (Kopec, p. 131). Many people feel as though the place they are in should have its own “special character”, or an identity that defines it, and distinguishes it from other places (Kopec, p.1). Kopec states, “An environment’s distinct spatial features, how it compares with others, its connections to personal life paths, and its potential for change combine to affect the meanings places have for people”. An establishment of this sense of place identity ...
Standing on the balcony, I gazed at the darkened and starry sky above. Silence surrounded me as I took a glimpse at the deserted park before me. Memories bombarded my mind. As a young girl, the park was my favourite place to go. One cold winter’s night just like tonight as I looked upon the dark sky, I had decided to go for a walk. Wrapped up in my elegant scarlet red winter coat with gleaming black buttons descending down the front keeping away the winter chill. Wearing thick leggings as black as coal, leather boots lined with fur which kept my feet cozy.
The roar of the people surrounding me is like being right behind the jet of
Growing up in a massive neighborhood magnificent. My neighborhood flooded with kids around my age to hang out with. Occupying the edge of this neighborhood was a large park where the neighborhood’s kids and I would spend most of our time eliminating their boredom. When this park would not satisfy our needs, there were
Over the decades, enclosures had been occurring in England and eventually became common in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Enclosing land would close off public lands in order to benefit wealthy landowners. The Enclosure Movement allowed these landowners to better support their animals and crops that covered their land. However, enclosures did not benefit everyone in England. In fact, the peasants in rural England suffered from the negative effects of enclosure during this controversial movement.
The word sacred has a variety of different meaning to different people depending on what context “sacred” is used. So for definition purposes according to the Oxford English Dictionary (2013) sacred is “Regarded with a great respect and reverence by a particular religion, group or individual” this is just one of the example of the definition as it hold many more but this one incorporates the meaning of a sacred place or space. Everyone has a special place that people will never forget. Sometimes it is because there were places that people experienced great joy or comfort. A special place represents peoples’ special memories either good or bad. Memory will following people whole life, and store people’s heart deeper. Good memory will coming all time. My special place and my memory is my grandparent’s house; my grandparent’s house practically is my second home. I would never forget that special place because of things going on my grandparent’s house, which is symbolized by my grandparent’s love.
Do you ever wonder why certain places mean so much to certain people? When I think of my bedroom, I realize why some people are touchy about who goes in their room or who has been touching things in their home, it is because those things are important to them and may have some meaning. Places like my bedroom are places where we can relax and be comfortable and I think that is why it is important to people, because we can be ourselves and feel comfortable, we can also just sit down and rest our bones and relax. Another important reason is we can go there when we want privacy, we can just shut our door, maybe even lock it, and tell everyone in our household not to bother us. Also our rooms hold most of our personal belongings and those things are important to us and we do not want anyone else to touch them or in some cases go near them.
It also provides the emotional link that I need to relax and a sense of comfort behind the closed doors of my home. I feel that these are the bricks that should be laid in every home and should be remembered in order to truly know what a home is or should be. I believe the feelings that are attached to me being at home do not come with a price tag, but it provides me with the different resources I need to help to shape my environment. Ultimately, things such as comfort, pleasure and a sanctuary are priceless within the walls of a
I think we all have a beautiful place in our mind. I have a wonderful place that made me happy a lot of times, years ago. But sometimes I think that I am the only person who likes this place and I'm asking myself if this place will be as beautiful as I thought when I will go back to visit it again. Perhaps I made it beautiful in my mind.
