Whether it be high school football star, or flying combat missions with the United States Air Force. Whether it be playing collegiate football, and really excelling, or actually moving on to a professional football career. Whether it be transforming from player to coach, and leading way for years to come and different programs; Tom Landry had experienced it all. Tom Landry was a great coach and player, whose leadership made him a hero, and a prestigious name in the football world.
The Odessa football players couldn't be objective about criticisms of football. Their total self-esteem depended on how they did on Friday night. This was the glorified culmination of their football career: wearing the black MoJo uniform in the stadium under the big lights. Football was more than just a game to them; it was a religion. It "made them seem like boys going off to fight a war for the benefit of someone else, unwitting sacrifices to a strange and powerful god" (Bissinger, p.11). Because football was so meaningful in their lives, to criticize it was to criticize everything they'd worked so hard for and lived for.
Louis Riel played a big role in Canada and was fighting for the rights of Metis. He was captured and executed by Canadian authorities in November 16, 1885 in Regina. Louis Riel did not receive a fair trial due that he was fighting for the rights of the Metis and people. It was inappropriate to accuse Riel as a traitor. He tried to defend the traditional right of Metis and equal people and dedicated his life to help others like Metis, Native Indians and Western settlers. He gained a lot of respect and was a good leader. Riel was a person who stepped up and was not afraid to tell the government what they needed. He tried to succeed through peaceful methods and bring change into the Canadian government. However, he did not want to take over Canada or start a revolution against Quebec. The Canadian government did not see this and went against him and charged him as a traitor. At this point, English speaking men were against Riel’s beliefs. When Louis Riel tried to get Metis rights and make them equal but the English people did not want to this change and thought that this was obligating treason. Treason expresses someone that is overthrowing the government in power. Many thoughts came up upon the government whether to hang Louis Riel or not. Quebec was concerned that if Riel would be hanged, they would upset the Conservative Party and if they kept him alive, Ontario would be enraged. Many members of the Canadian government believed that Riel was an insane and not responsible but he did not refuse to give up. Despite fear, the risk of arrest, and the risk of dying for helping other people Raoul Wallenberg saved upwards of a hundred thousand Jewish lives from Nazis in Budapest, Hungary, earning the title “Angel of Budapest”. Wallenberg’s selfless actions defined him as an individual, not his noble, wealthy family’s actions. Without the work of Raoul Wallenberg about one hundred thousand lives would have ended in the Holocaust.
Basketball was created and has been played since December 1891 (Griffiths, 2010), it is a game of skill and talent that is enjoyed by fans all over the world. There are numerous leagues, but the two main leagues are the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA). The NCAA is considered amateur where the players are not paid, and the NBA is considered professional where players make millions of dollars. In order for the NBA to get their players they draft from the NCAA, but the rules have changed several times over the years that have permitted players to enter the NBA. The current rule states that NBA players must be one year removed from high school or 19 years of age (Article X, 2008), this rule is considered by many needing the most change.

Despite the influx of talent from across the world, Samoans and Tongans have begun to dominate football with superior speed and strength that allows them to play outside the boundaries of past players at their size. The film shows every aspect of the process from the players entering high school to being scouted by college and professional scouts as they capture four years of the four young men’s careers. The fact that the film puts so much emphasis on the process shows the importance of it for the players as well as their families. Though the players have strength and support in the form of mothers, siblings and friends, the film stresses the difficulties that the players face as they attempt to become professional football

Bissinger creates empathy in the reader by narrating the lives of once Permian heros. Charlie Billingsley, a Permian football player, “was somewhere at the top” while he was playing. It was hard for the football town of Odessa to forget “how that son of a bitch played the game in the late sixties”(80). While in Odessa, Permian players receive praise unmatched by even professional football. This unmatchable praise becomes something Permian players like Billingsley become accustomed to, and when he “found out that...you were a lot more expendable in college(80). This lack of appreciation that is equivalent to the one that they have received their whole life makes them go from “a hero one day to a broken down nobody the next”(81). With the realization of this reality, Billingsley becomes one of the many to spend life as a wastrel, living in his memory of playing for the Permian Panthers. The reader becomes empathetic towards how the once likely to succeed Billingsley, becomes another Odessan wastrel due to the over emphasis and extreme praise the Odessan football team receives. Bissinger does not stop with a classic riches to rags story to spur the reader’s empathy but talks about the effect the Odessan attitude toward football has on the health of its players. Just like in many parts of the world, in Odessa, sports equates to manliness and manliness equates to not showing signs of pain. Philip, an eighth grade boy aspiring to one day be a Permian Panther is lauded by his stepfather as he “broke his arm during the first demonstrative series of a game ...[but] managed to set it back in” and continued playing for the rest of the game. The movie we watched showed all the emotions that can come from sport. Whether it would be a gratifying moment with a win for your team, or a devastating moment with a loss. That is what makes you grow when you are a younger kid growing up. A kid who can handle a loss in his life with the same dignity as a win will become a better person in the future.
The team was ready, we had been working extremely hard for the past seven months for this. We were all in great shape and very rested. A few of the returning players were meeting me at my house to carpool to the final game of the state championship tournament. Everyone knew that the hard work had paid off when we won the semi-final game the preceding day.
I feel my work is a resemblance of Robert Rauschenberg in a sense of innovation and expanding the use of material and mediums. Rauschenberg was well known for his ability to combined nontraditional material and objects creating a single - unified piece. Much of Rauschenberg 's work consisted of employing innovative combinations. Though, Rauschenberg was both a painter and a sculptor and implemented a combination of both, he also worked with photography, printmaking, papermaking, and performance -allowing him to expand his ideas and innovations.
