I've been catching up on Atlantic City's history, borrowing books from the library like Boardwalk of Dreams, The Northside, and Casino gaming in Atlantic City, among others. After moving down here recently, I can't understand why the South Inlet looks like a 50 year old urban renewal project that ran out of cement 40 years ago, while the casinos have pulled in $150 billion dollars over the last 35 years. Ride down Pacific Avenue and you'll see whole blocks cleared out with an occasional house sticking out, some new construction, and a few lost tourists who wandered off the Boardwalk. Last week I planned on visiting the Historical Museum on Garden Pier. I rode down New Jersey Avenue between the former Revel and Showboat casinos, looking for a place to park. The street was packed with cars, but I found an opening next to a driveway. There was no paint on the curb marking how close you could park to the end, but I thought I could squeeze in. With the city's $100 million dollar budget shortfall, they probably cut out frivolous spending like curb paint. When I reached the Boardwalk, I couldn't find Garden Pier. It's been …show more content…
downsized since the days when they held concerts on it, extending just a short distance off the Boardwalk. It now houses the museum and an art gallery. According to the sign out front, it's open Saturday through Wednesday. Unfortunately, I showed up on a Thursday. It was a nice day though, and the ocean and boards were more appealing than looking at pictures of hotels and dandies in rolling chairs. When we lived on South Rhode Island Avenue 50 years ago, people were abandoning the neighborhood, leaving their homes vacant, not even bothering to put them up for sale. Closer to the beach, absentee landlords were squeezing the last dime out of their properties while they let them deteriorate. As a kid, I didn't care about the post WWII economic and technological changes that were reshaping the demographic landscape where lived and vacationed. Urban blight, white-flight, disinvestment, and sub-standard housing weren't part of my vocabulary. All I knew was the beach, fishing, and playing games in the boardwalk arcades. It was late afternoon and I was getting hungry, so I headed towards Captain Starns.
I could almost hear the sea lions. There were some people on the beach, but few were venturing "Uptown" to stroll the boards. We used to call it the Inlet, the new name must have been cooked up by the $30 million dollar Do AC marketing team, along with the Tourist Zone trash cans lining the Boardwalk. A few blocks up, the Boardwalk ended at Rhode Island Avenue, so I cut over to the lighthouse. The property off the Boardwalk is still available for $345 a square foot. There were a couple of people on Pacific Avenue waiting for a Jitney, and I passed a deli and food market. When I walked through this area 20 years ago, I rarely saw anyone on the street. I thought I was in the twilight zone, with new apartments and condos, cars parked in attached garages, but no
people. I decided to skip Starns and find a bench on the Boardwalk to sit and relax for a while. The first bench I passed didn't have a back rest and I assumed it was broken. The next bench also lacked a backrest and had metal bars dividing it along its length. In fact, all the benches lacked backrests and had metal bars because they were designed to prevent people from getting too comfortable – part of the "Do AC" campaign to keep the bums off the Boardwalk so they don't scare the tourists. According to their website, the Atlantic City Rescue Mission "helps over 3,300 homeless and working poor people per year and is the largest provider of comprehensive services to about 20% of the entire state of New Jersey’s homeless population ... In 2008, they provided services to 2,312 men, 728 women, and 79 families with 146 children, and served 260,376 meals in the dining hall and 100,404 meals in food baskets. In addition, 98,894 beds were filled, an average of 270 per night." The Rescue Mission opened in 1964, operating out of a storefront, helping a handful of people who drifted in. In 1970 they moved to their current location on Bacharach Boulevard. Today they can sleep 250 people and serve 600 meals daily. The Rescue Mission, along with other non-profits in the city and the AtlantiCare health system, provide social services, addiction counseling and medical care. If you find the accommodations on the Boardwalk somewhat lacking, you can always crash at the mission.
To appreciate a row house neighborhood, one must first look at the plan as a whole before looking at the individual blocks and houses. The city’s goal to build a neighborhood that can be seen as a singular unit is made clear in plan, at both a larger scale (the entire urban plan) and a smaller scale (the scheme of the individual houses). Around 1850, the city began to carve out blocks and streets, with the idea of orienting them around squares and small residential parks. This Victorian style plan organized rectangular blocks around rounded gardens and squares that separated the row houses from major streets. The emphasis on public spaces and gardens to provide relief from the ene...
There are many examples of cities reforming itself over time, one significant example is Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. More than a hundred years after the discovery of gold that drew thousands of migrants to Vancouver, the city has changed a lot, and so does one of its oldest community: Downtown Eastside. Began as a small town for workers that migrants frequently, after these workers moved away with all the money they have made, Downtown Eastside faced many hardships and changes. As a city, Vancouver gave much support to improve the area’s living quality and economics, known as a process called gentrification. But is this process really benefiting everyone living in Downtown Eastside? The answer is no. Gentrification towards DTES(Downtown Eastside) did not benefit the all the inhabitants of the area. Reasons are the new rent price of the area is much higher than before the gentrification, new businesses are not community-minded, and the old culture and lifestyle of the DTES is getting erased by the new residents.
During the 1920’s, Atlantic City was famous for gambling and drinking. People all over would visit for entertainment and to get rich. After world war two crime and corruption took over the streets causing the city to enter an economic decline. Also following the war, cars became more available which led to the decrease of time spent at the city, people no longer had to wait for a train, they can now visit for a little and leave whenever. Less people staying at the hotels for longer, took away more of the cities money. In 1972, “ The New Yorker” published an article called the The Search for Marvin Garden’s by John McPhee who was smart and talented monopoly player. In the article, McPhee persuades Americans to be weary of what trying to become rich in order to be happy can produce and instead search for happiness in
First of all, I know this issue can be resolved as I have seen it done with my own eyes. Just recently the Hot and Now restaurant which has been abandoned for years was turned into a Checkers. However, it took a long time for these changes to occur and there is no reason for it to be that slow again when deciding what to do about the buildings in question. These abandoned buildings can be redone and give new life to the city of Battle Creek like the opening of new restaurants, stores etc. are ways the run down building can be utilized. Also, if the buildings were redone it can open up new experiences for the people living in Battle Creek.

Parking legally by the residence halls is almost impossible. Students who live at particular dorms find themselves faced with the problem of having to park on the other side of campus. Students who live in the valleys comment that they are surprised with the numerous tickets that are written every day and how it isn’t always clearly spelled out where they can park. They complain on how some parking spaces involve lengthy walks in the freezing cold weather, and how easily the lots fill up. Whenever I'm riding with someone and they have to park by my hall or any other, they usually park in the 30 min parking and leave their car there for hours, or in the faculty lots to avoid walking from the lot up the hill. These actio...
Being a student at Texas Woman’s University I am aware of some of the problems that occur on campus. Unfortunately, the parking situation here on campus sticks out like a sore thumb. Whether you can’t find an open parking space anywhere on campus or whether you just can’t justify paying $70.00 for a parking permit when it doesn’t guarantee you a parking spot. Not only are students fighting traffic to find a parking spot, but they are also having to park long distances from their class, which can become a major problem in the middle of winter in Texas. All of these problems faced by students that attend this university all boil down to how more parking needs to be added to this university. Throughout this essay I will inform you about a possible
Since the riots in the 1960’s, Detroit’s population has consistently decreased. In the 1950’s Detroit had a population of over 1,849,000, in 2010 Detroit had fewer than 800,000 people lived there (Wikipedia). Detroit’s image as a dangerous and poor city has encouraged those who can to move as soon as possible. However in the past few years the city has applied for bankruptcy and has since been under new management. This new Detroit is much nicer with many new amenities . The government has received more funding, torn down many crumbling buildings, and added many new parks and trails, notably the Dequindre cut (Picture 1) and Milliken State Park (Picture 9) adding to the overall value of ones experience in Detroit.
The beautiful, radiant and vibrant island that goes by the name of Jamaica is located on the Windward region of the Caribbean. It is one of the best place to be on earth. Our motto “Out of Many One People”, symbolizes the vast cultures and races that make up this beautiful island. Jamaica the land I love, lives on in each individual and leaves a positive impact even with just one visit or no visit at all. In this essay I will elaborate on the various cultures that build up the island, the different attractions the country has to offer and an overview of the unique lifestyle of Jamaicans.
Located near downtown Chicago, Burnham Harbor is the largest of the 10 Chicago Harbors. It sits along Lakeshore with the city’s towering skyline as its backdrop. Visitors enjoy a large number of activities in and out of the water.
As I lay on the minute golden grains of sand, I looked up at the brilliant sky, adorned with flashes of pink and orange and purple, mirroring the colours of a flawless seasoned apricot. The goddess-like sun’s face is being embraced by the demure navy fingertips of the skyline.
Ever since Sunset Beach has been officially opened to the public, there has been a drastic increase of tourists present. Television programs concluded that at least a thousand people visit the beach everyday. Reasons for their stay are that they feel comfortable with the environment that surrounds the beach front, people who are at the beach are joyous and numerous activities to enjoy, and the fresh scent of the sparkly waters, make the visitors feel calm and pleasurable. So I decided to take a trip there.
Venice is a famous “water” city that is located in the northern Italy and the Adriatic Sea. It is full of historical colors, and now becomes to a well-known tourist city. The urban area of Venice is less than eight square kilometers. It consists of 118 islands and 170 canals, which is distributed over the Venice like a spider web. These islands and canals are connected by about 400 kinds of various bridges. Boat is the only transportation in this city, and the waterways are the main roads of the city of Venice where has no vehicles, bicycles, and traffic lights. Some of the waterways are very narrow that can only contain one boat for passing through each time.
I use any excuse to walk along the ocean, especially alone and without my phone. The wind blew cold air, but the sun’s warm rays kept my body at a perfect temperature. It was three in the afternoon and I was calm.
I think we all have a beautiful place in our mind. I have a wonderful place that made me happy a lot of times, years ago. But sometimes I think that I am the only person who likes this place and I'm asking myself if this place will be as beautiful as I thought when I will go back to visit it again. Perhaps I made it beautiful in my mind.
