The streets rest, empty, devoid of all life. The dead trees of winter lay in a straight line across the side of the road. The white and yellow lines along the roads are almost completely faded. The city is a wreck. The dark red brick buildings sit, abandoned and half broken. Almost all of the windows are shattered and the insides are completely scavenged. Along the sides of most the houses are local gang symbols, showing whose territories were which. These gang symbols are almost all different and represent the many gangs of ‘Chiraq”, otherwise known as the hood of Chicago. Ranging from a bright-red-x to a jagged teeth mouth, all the symbols are intimidating. As for the weather, the light fall of snow has covered up the air. You wouldn’t be …show more content…
There had been a string of murders around the city and they had all been linked to the mysterious symbol engraved into the victims’ chests.
“It seems like every other week there is another dead body” responded Detective Thomas. Detective Thomas was the head detective at the southside police department, and he was chosen to uncover this case. He was determined to solve this case because the same symbol was engraved on his dead wife's chest when she was viciously murdered 1 year before.

Enjoy your night...detective.” Said the despondent Ryan. Detective Thomas then got into his car and drove off into the night. Hmm that is suspicious, Detective Ryan joined the force when the first murders started happening Thomas thought, and the bullets came from the police department. Thomas became very suspicious of Detective Ryan but he decided to get a good night's rest first. Thomas got home and went to sleep. At 7:30 Thomas woke up and was getting ready to go to work when he saw an envelope sitting on his desk. He opened it and saw the words I’m watching you signed with the killer’s symbol. After this, he was certain that detective Ryan was the culprit so he went to the police station to interrogate him. Thomas got to the police station and immediately started asking
In Walt Harrington’s True Detective, the article centers on the character Victor Smith, better known as V.I., who is a detective who investigates cases of homicide. This article was effective in allowing the readers to understand the perspective of a homicide detective and the many cases they undergo. However, it was difficult to find a connection with this article, because I have no experience with homicide or murder cases apart from what I have seen from the media and TV shows. I was still able to enjoy True Detective, as it described the daily lives of the detectives from Homicide North.
A 43 year old detective Patrick Maloney, husband of Mary Maloney was found dead in his ‘loving’ home on the evening of September 16th, 1954 around 11:00pm. Mary was heartbroken when she came home and found her beloved husband lying dead on the ground. However, the cause of death was a mystery. When the police had arrived at the scene of the crime, it had looked like someone broke into their home and that they were looking for something. The police had investigated for hours but couldn’t seem to find any evidence or a specific lead. The only information that Mary could provide was that he seemed a little ‘off’ coming home from work that he had been stressed out about something.
Gang life exists as a lifestyle because of a lack of access to resources. Gangs are classically viewed as a by-product of social disorganization, the weakness of traditional institutions, like the schools, to replace the lost primary networks of the traditional world. Home of the Chicago Bulls and great players, such as, Michael Jordan and Derick Rose, who have won six rings and it is considered to host one of the greatest NBA teams of all times. It is the adopted hometown of the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama. The city has produced great musicians such as R. Kelly and Nat King Cole, who revolutionized the music industry during their time. It has been burnt down and rebuilt stronger than ever, with landmarks, such as the Sears Tower and John Hancock building dominating the skyline. It is known for its famous cuisines, such as the deep dish pizza and their famous hot dogs. Chicago is a remarkable city with a lot of great attributes, but in recent years the lethal combination of gangs and guns has turned Chicago into a war zone. The Windy City, now dubbed "Chiraq," had the country’s highest homicide rate in 2012 with 500 murders on record (Erbentraut). Chicago is a war zone, so much so that, in recent years, its younger citizens have taken to calling it “Chiraq,”after Iraq, the Middle Eastern nation the United States has been deadlocked in a war with since 2003 (“FBI: Chicago”). With good reason, 4,265 people have been killed in Chicago since 2001. This is 2.5 times more than in the Afghanistan war zone (Chi raq). The youth internalized their situation by proudly calling themselves soldiers or savages. They learn the violent and anti-social behavior whether for survival reasons or because their only role models ex...
For my final paper I choose to sociologically analyze the book Gang Leader for a Day: A Rogue Sociologist Takes to the Streets by Sudhir Venkatesh. Newsweek describes Gang Leader for a Day as being “Compelling…dramatic…Venkatesh gives readers a window into a way of life that few Americans understand.” (Newsweek) Gang Leader for a Day tells the story of a young sociologist named Sudir Venkatesh and his search for answers to poverty problems in the urban projects. After being constantly warned of which areas not to visit, Venkatesh decided to ignore all the forewarnings and goes and walks into Lake Park Projects, to conduct surveys for his professor. On his trip into the projects Venkatesh ends up meeting a gang leader named J.T. After spending the night in the projects Venkatesh is allowed to leave after J.T. states “You shouldn’t go around asking them silly-a** questions —- With people like us, you should hang out, get to know what they do, how they do it. No one is going to answer questions like that .You need to understand how young people live on the streets.” (2008 : 21) From that day on Venkatesh would come to end up befriending J.T and spending almost all of his time in the projects. It isn’t until J.T gets relocated to the notorious Robert Taylor Housing that the real study begins. Over the next seven years Venkatesh would not only gather information from J.T but, also befriend everyone from the other neighborhood dealers, crackheads, squatters, prostitutes, pimps, activists, cops, organizers, and officials. Through his time spent with the residents and officials of the Robert Taylor Homes Venkatesh not only was able to gain insight on the day to day life of...
Gangs can be classified as a group of adolescents who are perceived to be a threat to society, are mostly recognized by their name and territorial power, and have been involved in numerous acts that violate criminal law procedures in North America. (Esbensen, Winfree, He and Taylor, 2001). The first theme that was present in the pieces of literature collected was the lack of opportunities. As previously stated before, becoming involved in a gang starts at a young age. An article titled “Youth Gangs and Definitional Issues: ‘When is a Gang a Gang, and Why Does It Matter?’” explicates what exactly constitutes a gang, starting with young adolescents. Using a survey conducted in the United States, Finn-Aage Esbensen, L. Thomas Winfree, Jr., Ni He, and Terrance J. Taylor (2001) surveyed over 5,000 students. The questions asked were based on how and why they chose to be in a gang (whether they were a part of it currently or before the survey was conducted). The authors concluded their research in deciding unanimously that there was a connection between a social learning theory, and the commencement of gangs. Correspondingly, Herbert C. Covey (2003) created an academic book entitled, Street Gangs Throughout the World, which gave an in-depth look at the different types of gangs across the world. Throughout several chapters, Covey looks at the root causes of how any why gangs are formed. The author noticed that there was a significant trend among young, deprived adolescents and gang membership. (Covey, 2003). Covey (2003) indicated that the more underprivileged a youth was, the more likely the chances would be of them joining a gang, which is a major concern.
Gangs of New York is a war-packed film directed by Martin Scorsese that takes place in New York during the Civil War. This 2002 film is about a young Irish immigrant, named Amsterdam, who returns to the Five Points to get revenge on William Cutting, a powerful gang leader who murdered his father. One scene that really sticks out within the film occurs during the draft riots that took place in New York. Although this particular scene is historically accurate, there are some parts of the scene itself that seem to have a bigger impact overall. The parts that create this impact show how important this dark period was and how violently this event played out in the real world.
In now days, the increase in gun violence troubles many communities in the United States. Many of the high-crime neighborhoods have become a total gang-controlled area. In 2013, the total number of gangs in the United States are 24,500 (Federal Bureau of Investigations). As major cities in America struggle to respond to the growth of gangs and attendant crime and violence, the law enforcement come up with gang injunctions to reduce crimes rates. Although a couple of gang injunctions have been granted in Texas and Illinois, the overwhelming majority of injunctions have been issued in California. In 2005, the total number of violent crimes were 5,985 alone in San Francisco that year, and 31, 767 in Los Angeles (Disaster Center). According to Matthew O’Deane, a police officer, and Stephen Morreale, an Assistant Professor of Worcester State University, a study and review was conducted of 25 southern California gang injunctions to understand if civil gang injunctions reduce crime. As a result, the study found that the crime rate decreased by 14.1% in injunction areas.
Across the United States and Europe, suburban gangs are growing as never before, estimations that in a typical inner city American community of 50,000 or more, there are 200 to 500 gang members. Some even larger organization called super gangs, which have more than 1,000 members spread over several states, have been known to operate in small town America. You cant say that any community is insulated from this activity," There's no restriction on where gang members can live. Gang members living in the suburbs share traits with recruits in the cities, and many of those factors have been exacerbated by tough economic times, The list of factors include divorce, separation, physical abuse, sexual abuse and having a parent with
Gangs have been around forever and there are two types of gangs which are, street gangs and prison gangs. They have the same structures that are divided as leadership and soldiers. The main difference between a street gang and prison gang is that a prison gangs are more disciplined than a street gang. Incarcerated members cannot escape their environment and therefore, are forced to comply with the facilities and gangs regulation. Gangs are always involved with criminal activity and it's difficult to control negative behavior and to lower recidivism rates for gang members.
In the portion "Gangsta Culture" from Bell Hooks' We Real Cool: Black Men and Masculinity
During 19th century, New York City became America’s largest city as well as fabulous capital. Also, New York City experienced enormous economic and social transformations in 19th century. There was big difference between rich and poor. Immigrants flooded into New York and it caused mixing and conflicts in between different religions and ethnics. While people were fighting, criminals found out the easier way to live their lives. They found out that it was much easier to cooperate with people who had the same idea. And so conflicts in the society and the idea of living an easier life led to formation of strong street gangs.
‘Gangs, Guns and Police’ a documentary that aired in 2016 on BBC’s paranormal show, features around the murder of 35-year-old Lee Erdmann, who was shot publicly in a restaurant and the gang culture in Salford, England. The documentary discusses how it is affecting the local community and creating a ‘Fear Factor’ amongst people to help the police. The purpose of the documentary is to get eyewitnesses or anyone in Salford to start trusting the police in their local area and to help stop the gang culture providing a message stating that the locals should help the police, and their fellow locals, the documentary is targeted at locals all around the world with the same problems that Salford has, that are 16 or older.
The origin of "Gangs" can lead all the way backk to the post revolutionary times. In the early days, gangs were meant to only protect or act as clubs to some. The revolutions of gangs have since taken a turn for the worse. There are an estimated 785,000 known and active gangs in America only. Gangs have popped up in almost every country, every continent, each with their own distinct style. Caucasians, African Americans, Hispanics, and Asians are all linked to the history of gangs.
In the past they have been responsible for crime after crime, but in today’s day and time some gangs are trying to be better and make a difference. The fact is, not all gangs are bad, like the media would like you to think they are. I think the media should start covering both the good and bad aspects of gangs and what they truly do for the community. If children and our youth see the positive aspects that gangs have to offer, they may be less likely to only follow the negative path gangs can take them down. I hope that the media will one day realize what a positive impact they can have on society, and they will one day quit being so biased in their reporting.
The completion of high school is the beginning of adult life. Entitlement to public education ends, and young people and their families are faced with many options and decisions about the future. The most common choices for the future are pursuing vocational training or further academic education, getting a job, and living independently.
