In ancient Egypt, Maat was not only the name of a revered goddess but also an ethical tenet. It encompassed the concepts of truth, balance, order, law, morality and justice. Every Egyptian citizen was expected to follow this principle throughout his or her daily life. They were to act with honor and honesty in matters that involved family, the community, the nation, the environment and god. Maat, as a principle, was established to meet the complex needs of an Egyptian state that embraced diverse people with conflicting interests. It was designed to help maintain order and became a cornerstone of Egyptian law. Ancient people believed that if Maat was not upheld, chaos would descend upon them in the form of crop failure, famine, drought, disease, etc. Pharaohs were also expected to champion Maat and Hatshepsut was no exception. …show more content…
Under her rule, Egypt prospered and the delicate cosmic balance was preserved. Hatshepsut had many buildings constructed and renovated during her time as Pharaoh. Some of her more notable commissions being the temple Speos Artemidos, Temple of Hathor at Meir, Chapelle Rouge and giant obelisks at Karnak that were, at the time, the tallest in the world. To be able to afford such extravagant undertakings, Hatshepsut must have been running a success and wealthy country. It is easy to forget when viewing modern day Luxor, for example, how unusual it was at that time to build temples out of stone. It was a very progressive thing for a king to do. Most buildings prior to this time were of mud and brick. The extent and scale of her building works is very impressive and indicative of a successful ruler. Another indication of a successful ruler is the ability to trade with foreign countries. Hatshepsut imported luxuries like ebony, incense, frankincense, myrrh, elephant tusks, panther skins and gold from all over. Trade in these commodities demonstrates power and influence. In her temple at Deir al Bahri, evidence of an expedition to Punt (modern day Somalia) can be seen in the form of wall paintings. The exotic land is drawn in wonderful detail- the difficulties and dangers hinted at by the military presence and boats. Riches are shown being loaded onto the boats and presented to the god Amun. Hatshepsut did not have much to be concerned about in regards to the domestic peasantry. The flooding of the Nile was a constant concern of the ancient Egyptians. Too little and the fields would not yield a good harvest; too much and villages would be destroyed and fields rendered useless. The Nile was dependable and the peasantry had enough to eat. The jury is still out on whether it was because she upheld Maat or just got incredibly lucky. A true indicator of the success of a king is the state of his or her peasantry and Hatshepsut’s seemed content. Hatshepsut was a very clever and intelligent woman.
She knew that in order to keep control of the crown, she had to have loyal followers and a strong relationship with her co-regent Thutmose III. To do this, many of her staff members were chosen from the lower middle classes instead of the upper class like they usually are in these situations. Making herself the cause of their wealth and happiness forged a strong allegiance between Hatshepsut and her subordinates. She often showered them with lavish gifts from faraway places like the previously mentioned Punt. When Thutmose III was seven or eight, Hatshepsut made the unusual move of crowning herself king. She shared that role with Thutmose III for the remainder of her life. Only two other women had previously served as pharaoh, and both for much briefer periods that Hatshepsut’s reign, which lasted some twenty-one years. Archaeological record has produced no evidence of strife between the co-regents and in fact, stone reliefs often portray them as twins, ruling in unison. She must have been incredibly diplomatic and an asset to the Crown to be kept on as co-king once Thutmose III came of
age. Lastly, Hatshepsut was successful because her dynasty did not die with her. Earlier and later female kings had short reigns and signaled the end of a dynasty, but Hatshepsut. She ruled for over twenty years and the transition to Thutmose III was smooth and untroubled. Many of her best staff members continued to serve under him. Many historians attribute the continuation of the dynasty to the diligence Hatshepsut took in raising Thutmose III. He was always provided with the best educators and caretakers. As co-regents, she showed him the ropes and ultimately prepared him for sole kingship. His rule lasted for almost fifty-four years. Beyond shadow of doubt, Hatshepsut was a magnificently successful leader of Egypt. Her dynasty continued, Maat was maintained, buildings were extensive and impressive, foreign trade was strong and her people were content and cared after.
Hatshepsut, declared herself king during the reign of her stepson and nephew, Thutmose III. She adopted the full titulary of a pharaoh, and since this was traditionally a man’s role, she wore the nemes-headcloth, the shendyt-kilt and a fake beard as part of the ceremonial attire of the Egyptian king. This is portrayed in her life-size statue “White Hatshepsut” at the MET.
In Gardiner’s excerpt, Hatshepsut was showcased as a deviation from his original topic of discussion, Thutmose II and III. Made out to be a sudden, minor and unfair oddity that occurred during Thutmose III’s reign, her rise to power is not something Gardiner discusses in detail (Gardiner 1961:181-2). When explaining the end of Hatshepsut’s reign, he immediately continues Thutmose III’s narrative since it is then that he finally becomes “free” of his step-mother, who he “hated” for putting in the background (Gardiner 1961:182, 188). Thutmose III is clearly the active, and more important, subject here. This differs from Robins, who stresses that her rise to power could been done on a whim as well as something not done for solely selfish reasons (Robins 1993:47). Gardiner also states that Hatshepsut “required” masculine support in order to succeed, while Robins stresses the roles of other female royalty, like her mother Ahmose Neferari and her daughter Neferura, in the past (Gardiner 1961:184) (Robins 1993:46, 48). Before Hatshepsut, there were other woman who attempted to rule over Egypt. Every time a woman came to power, there was some sort of problem that was left for them to solve. Unlike Hatshepsut, the other woman did not have any confidence to name themselves pharaoh and they did not grow up in the royal family like Hatshepsut did. "The Hymn to the Aten" was created by Amenhotep IV, who ruled from 1369 to 1353 B.C., and began a move toward a monotheist culture instead of the polytheist religion which Egypt had experienced for the many hundreds of years prior to the introduction of this new idea. There was much that was different from the old views in "The Hymn to the Aten", and it offered a new outlook on the Egyptian ways of life by providing a complete break with the traditions which Egypt held to with great respect. Yet at the same time, there were many commonalties between these new ideas and the old views of the Egyptian world. Although through the duration of his reign, Amenhotep IV introduced a great many changes to the Egyptian religion along with "The Hymn", none of these reforms outlived their creator, mostly due to the massive forces placed on his successor, Tutankhamen, to renounce these new reforms. However, the significance of Amenhotep IV, or Akhenaten as he later changed his name to, is found in "The Hymn". King tut was eight or nine when he took over as king. When he took the crown he was married to his queen. In Egypt it was normal for kings to marry their sister or half sister. With King Tut he married his half sister. It is believed that when King Tut was crowned king he was heavily influenced by his great uncle Ay. When a new king comes in to rule they have to go through coronation, meaning to be presented with multiple crowns. The most important ones were red, white, double crown, blue crown and the nemes headdress. During the time of Ancient Egypt, having strong Pharaohs was essential to the maintenance and growth of the civilization, as the Pharaohs were believed to be living Gods. Although leadership of Ancient Egypt was often male dominated, there were admirable female Pharaohs who successfully gained power and left behind a positive legacy; one woman to achieve this was Hatshepsut, meaning ‘foremost of female nobles’. Her innovation and determination allowed her to maintain her position of Pharaoh for about twenty years (1479-1458 BCE). Hatshepsut was considered to be a very successful leader because of her confidence and ambition, magnificent building projects, and establishment of a strong trading network.
When an Egyptian Pharaoh is pictured, it is normally a person with a very elegant crown and well-designed clothing, but most importantly a Pharaoh is depicted as a man. In the history of Egypt, though, some Pharaohs were actually women, just like the case of Hatshepsut. There were other women rulers of Egypt, and when asked which one is most recognized, it is probably Cleopatra, but Hatshepsut deserves just as much respect as Cleopatra for the way she obtained the title of Pharaoh. She not only broke the traditional laws of Egypt when becoming Pharaoh, but Hatshepsut let nothing stop her from becoming a future Pharaoh of Egypt. Developing into a Pharaoh was not a simple task, but to become Pharaoh “Hatshepsut made the most extraordinary move ever made by an Egyptian, or any other woman” (Wells 185). The move to follow her dreams were filled with lots of struggles, and the major struggle that was in her way was being a woman when most Pharaohs are men. Another struggle was her stepson Tuthmosis III, and his journey to become the next Pharaoh. The last struggle was to keep her legacy known after her death to show the Pharaoh she really was. Through all the battles to become Pharaoh, Hatshepsut stayed strong to become a person many women could not be in that specific time period. Hatshepsut, no doubt, had struggles through her destination of becoming a Pharaoh, but she fought through each battle in becoming one of the most known and popular Pharaohs of Egypt.

Hatshepsut was born to Ahmose and Tuthmosis I, who was pharaoh at the time. Tuthmosis I and Ahmose also gave birth to two sons, both of whom died, leaving Hatshepsut as the only heir to the throne. It is unknown whether her parents raised her to become the pharaoh or not, but she grew up and married her half-brother, Tuthmosis II. Marrying within your family was a regular practice in royal families because it kept blood lines intact. Tuthmosis II and Hatshepsut had a daughter together named Neferure. Tuthmosis II took over, but only ruled for about three or four years, when he died from what is believed to be a skin disease. ... Egyptian women were looked at differently than men; their role was that of the nurturer and the caregiver, the bearer of a family’s future. They were just as important to the society as the men. Ancient Egypt was a very complex world, and just as complex was the role that women played in its society. They were not free, but they also were not enslaved. They were vital, but only in terms of their husbands and their children. Egypt offered women a far more free life than the rest of the ancient world. In the end, women played a secondary role to men putting their desires for achievement aside so their husband could be king.
