The Processes: The sheriff's office falls under county government. The agency that handles most personnel/human resource management (P/HRM) issues is the County Personnel Office (CPO). The CPO plays a key role in collective bargaining for the county with the various guilds/unions, and they are also involved in grievance issues concerning EEO complaints (workplace harassment, discrimination, unfair labor practices, etc.) The CPO is also responsible for the hiring and promotion processes for all career Civil Service positions in county level employment.
Kenneth Ashworth, a public servant, has served Texas and its fine education for more than thirty years and knows all the ins and outs of how the government works. He has written his book to benefit his niece, who has decided to follow in his footsteps, of all of his dealings from problematic politicians to many life lessons that have shaped him. Intended for his niece, this book has opened the minds for not only me and my peers, but for students around the state. After reading Caught between the Dog and the Fireplug, or How to Survive Public Service, Kenneth Ashworth makes a truthful point of knowing what the differences of personal responsibility and social responsibility is as a bureaucrat. Ashworth shows that social and personal responsibility can be two of the same if the morals of the person acting upon them are in good conscious.
Overall, the SBS programme, Struggle Street (2015) provided a graphic insight into the hardships faced by lower-class Australians in Mount Druitt, Sydney. Nevertheless, viewing the programme allowed me to reflect and compare with my own observations of poverty within both Vietnam and Cambodia. The emotion I felt whilst watching the programme was incomparable to helplessly observing the great poverty within Cambodia.
Class is a key idea related to inequality, prejudice and discrimination in Australian society. It has been considered out of fashion, because some Australian people think that there is no class difference between people in Australia, everyone enjoys equality in society. In fact, the recent de-regulation of the workplace, and the widening gap in access to hospitals, schools and employment opportunities between the rich and poor, have made class more visible in Australian than ever before. Class is "a category of people who have generally similar educational histories, job opportunities, and social standing and who are conscious of their membership in a social group that is ranked in relation to others and is replicated over generations" (Kent, 1998:87). This essay argues that class cause continues to inequality in Australian society. Firstly, class structures labor market inequality. Secondly, class shapes the quality of a person's life. Thirdly, class inequality produces continuing class differences into the next generation. Finally, class has becoming a debate in Australian society, because class inequality encourages the `right' people to work more efficiently in the workforce and helps people to identify themselves in society, but continuing relevance of the concept of class is a matter in contemporary Australia.
In the Pulitzer prize-winning novel Evicted, sociologist Matthew Desmond follows eight families as he exposes how the lack of affordable housing perpetuates a state of poverty. He even goes so far as to assert that it is eviction that is a cause of poverty, not the other way around (Desmond 229). While this latter argument is as engrossing and it is striking, analyzing it with justice is simply not possible within the scope of this paper. Nevertheless, it is these two factors—inescapable poverty and eviction—that engender an unrelenting condition of financial, emotional, and communal instability, effectively hindering any chance of upward mobility.
The government of Syracuse consists of a mayor and a common council. The mayor, Roy Bernardi, has served at the city's Chief Executive since 1993. He is responsible for all of the city administration and business. The city of Syracuse also has a ten member common council. The current president, Matthew Driscoll, and the nine other common council members, meet biweekly to create legislation and balance the 1.5 million-dollar city budget.
On Monday, April 13th, 2009, I visited the Culver City city council meeting, and found that they operate using a council-manager form of government. For a city with a population of about 38,000, this type of governmental structure is fairly common, and I was not surprised to see it in action in a community where the median household income is around $56,000 a year. Culver City is also a culturally rich community with a 60 percent Caucasian population, and a quarter of the residents are either of African American or Asian decent. The mayor, D. Scott Malsin, is one of five members on the council, and his term as mayor is on a rotating basis. Having been to a Hermosa Beach city council meeting with a similar council-manager structure, I knew what to expect.
Koppelman writes that construction worker's wages were analyzed during 1833 and it was concluded that the wages paid were insufficient to properly support a family consisting of two children, his wife, and himself. (2011 p. 263) This is a direct parallel to Ehrenreich when she stated that the moment of realization four she was when she concluded that the demographic category of “trailer trash” was something to be aspired for. (p. 216)
As a mayor begins or continues their term of office, their overall purpose is as leader of the council and a number of roles which are both legislative and functional. The mayor not only takes precedence at all municipal proceedings within the municipality but must also take the chair at all meetings of the council at which he or she is present. The mayor’s role extends well beyond officiating at council meetings or other municipal proceedings and includes providing leadership, promoting positive relationships, and modelling good governance.

Working with Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department has truly been a wonderful experience for me. The internship program for the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department has been recently modified to accommodate experience in multiple fields within the
The movie, Rosewood is a movie that tells the story of two groups of people (blacks and whites) living in neighboring neighborhoods in Florida. African Americans lived in Rosewood and whites lived in Sumner. The movie started showing the two neighborhoods, Sumner to the left and Rosewood on the right. In Rosewood, one of the landscape that was first showed was the First A.M.E. Church, this I believe to show the African American’s faith and a common ground that they share as a people. The movie also showed the train station in Rosewood where Aunt Sarah Carrier and her grandson were selling fruits, vegetables, and eggs to the whites getting on the train. Once the train rolls by viewers are taken to the town of Sumner, the white neighborhood. In Sumner we see a young white boy and his boar, the boy
Council bluffs is amazing but you can always make something better, so here are the things I would do as mayor to make Council bluffs a better place. First I would build a park for kids to play and have fun and for dogs to get exercise, then I would make the Mall of the Bluffs a activity center so people can practice their sports and activities, and finally build more local businesses
Socioeconomic disadvantage within the Australian schooling system is rife. Socioeconomic status (SES) is an economic and sociological combined total measure of an individuals’ access to material and social resources as well as their ability to participate in society. (ABS, 2006).
In order to know they matter to the government, citizens should have the opportunity to make sure their voices are heard before another election. “Administrators focus on what matters. Politicians focus on what matters to others.” Politicians are the face of the government for many citizens who are not as involved in government. The government should prioritize issues based on need and feasibility. That is not to say that sometimes items aren’t put on the agenda for political gain. The process and cost of some tasks, while important, may cause some issues to be put on the back burner. It is the responsibility of the politician to ensure that the citizens’ top priorities are a center focus. The politician should communicate with citizens and collaborate with them on ideas and possibilities to improve their top priorities such as education and safety. The key is an open line of communication between the local government and
