The movie “Inside-Out” was both a critical and box office hit. The movie follows a girl named Riley and her five personified emotion, joy, fear, sadness, anger and disgust. After her family moves for Minnesota to San Francisco, Riley begins to show many emotional issues. The movie shows a great ranger of these emotion, many of which is normal for an eleven-year-old girl. However, there are points where were if these systems continued then Riley could be diagnosed with some sort of disorder. Although there could be many different diagnoses for Riley, the most likely on is depression, also called a Depressive Disorder with the possibility of comorbidity with an anxiety disorder. One possible diagnoses for Riley is a Depressive or Mood Disorder. There are many different kinds of Depressive disorders. One that cannot be a diagnosis for Riley is Dysthymia. This is because a key aspect of Dysthymia is that the symptoms happen over a two-year span. Being at a new school she has no friends and no adult figures at school whom she trusts, the only teacher we see makes her cry. Throughout Riley’s life, joy has always been her most powerful emotion. All of her “core memories” are joyful ones. Usually, Riley is a friends, family and hockey loving silly girl. Although this is great it also holds her back. The first night in her family’s new San Francisco home, her mother comes in a tells her how proud she is of her a how Riley being strong is helping them, her parents, get though the difficult time of the move. Although this shows good intentions, it can also be harmful. This puts a lot of pressure on Riley, something she is not ready to handle. She didn’t wake up every morning, happy to go to the school and learn more things, instead she felt terrified wondering what was going to happen to her. Some days were not as bad like the others but there was some days that Melba could've really got hurt but she always found a way out without getting too injured. Roxanne faces a relationship crisis with her fiance since he wants to receive a scholarship and play college ball in another city. Roxanne had no past experience and Roberta suggests her to “try not to get too worked up about [the issue] … [because] [she] [will] get it straightened out” (32) eventually. Growing up wasn’t always easy for Kelly. She was the baby of the family, with four older brothers and sisters. Sitting in Catholic school, she tried to be the cute little girl she was supposed to be but on the playground, she was a terror. At the age of 5, she joined her first soccer league, which happened to be a boys’ team. Things stayed the same way until she got to high school. She began to notice boys and began to date. No one in her family had ever talked to her about the “birds and the bees,” or even about dating. Instead, independence, self-reliance, and strength were the most important things. Susie’s mother opened the door to let Molly, Susie’s babysitter, inside. Ten-month old Susie seemed happy to see Molly. Susie then observed her mother put her jacket on and Susie’s face turned from smiling to sad as she realized that her mother was going out. He had lost his wife and his job and life just was not happening in his favor. His aim was to win back his wife, which happened to be quite difficult in his case. That is until he met this widowed woman named Tiffany Maxwell, who promised to help him reach out to his wife if he returned a favor and danced with her in a competition. The goal of cognitive-behavioral treatment is to adapt the patient’s thoughts; as Riley is thinking of how she is failing to deal with the present situation she is in, this treatment will help her change this thinking. In this treatment, Riley’s patterns of thinking would be recognized over a series of appointments, and the clinician would then identify different ways of viewing the same situations Riley has been dealing with, making them not as dysfunctional for her. As well as cognitive-behavioral treatment, physical activity can also combat depression because it releases endorphins; this treatment would be accessible to Riley, and it is something that can be self-initiated as well as encouraged by her parents. Depression is a mental health condition which is widely recognised as one of the most common conditions for which people seek and receive care. There are many specific nursing problems which are encompassed by the medical term “depression” and these include physical, cognitive and behavioural patterns. Successful treatments of depression are psychosocial interventions which aim to identify and challenge a depressed persons pessimistic attitudes and beliefs and which promote an individuals’ participation in rewarding activities in an attempt to reduce any negative behaviours. The aim of this essay is to identify specific nursing problems which are encompassed by the term “depression” and relate these to a patient whom the author had met whilst out on clinical placement who had been given a medical diagnosis of depression. The movie Carrie is full of both scenes of Awakenings due to experiences and forms of depression due to external conflicts. In one example an awakening Carrie has in the iconic film is when she gets her first period in the shower at her high school. Being a teenage girl and experiencing this for the first time would be frightening all together.
