What is education to you? Education is not just a school, an institution in which you are confined to and force fed information, wait in some schools it is like that, to me it all depends on whether you are of a fixed or growth mindset. Don’t just look at education as a thing, think of it as a journey. I am of a growth mindset, but it wasn’t always like that it did take me awhile to get to there. Throughout my educational career, I did have some difficulties and some successes to go along as well, but who doesn’t. Sometimes you just got to ask yourself how far you will go to succeed in life. Well now is the ideal time to sit down and listen to the story I am going to tell.
Like I had stated before you could have either a fixed or growth mindset.

This is referred to as the Deposit Theory, in Freire’s words, it is “instead of communicating, the teacher issues communiques (commands) and makes deposits which the students patiently receive, memorize, and repeat (1). Another way of looking at this is known as the Sausage Theory, in which students are “stuffed” with so much information and are assumed to keep this knowledge sealed up. In contrast to this theory “The job of teaching is… to help them (pupils) open up and reveal the riches within (Harris, 1).”This theory is known as the Oyster Theory. I believe that instead of forcing information into the student’s brain the teacher should give the students a way to withdraw such knowledge and collaborate with the teacher to get a better understanding of the taught …show more content…
One moment was of me receiving a prompt for an essay in middle school that had asked to write a journal of how you envisioned life as someone, who took part in the Boston Tea Party. That was when my imagination took flight and made writing that paper a fun thing rather than a chore to do. A week or two later I went to class finding a letter from the school congratulating me on my creativity. Another moment was practically my senior year English class, because the teacher had taught the concept of English in a different way. My teacher had put emphasis in the theatrical aspect of English. To sum it up, there was never a dull moment in
For task two I will be analyzing video under the generalist heading and under the subheading Integrating Mathematics and Science number 142. The video is of a third grade classroom conducting an experiment about different types of soil. They are to test which types absorb more water and which how fast the water goes through the water. The first instructional strategy the teacher mentions changing is that at first she had the groups into more of a homogeneous grouping where the higher achievers were paired with the lower achievers, but the teacher observed that the higher achievers were doing the majority of the work. The teacher decided to make the groups into more of a heterogeneous grouping where the pairs were closer to the same achievement
Worse yet, it turns them into "containers," into "receptacles" to be "filled" by the teachers. The more completely she fills the receptacles, the better teacher she is. The more meekly the receptacles permit themselves to be filled, the better students they are (Freier 216). It seems like these great authors such as Walker Percy and Paulo Freier criticize the role educators play in the education system and urge students to break free from the conformity of the way subjects are taught in school and truly experience them through our own dialectical approach.
How do teachers attempt to control the way you understand the world? Paulo Freire, author of “The ‘Banking’ Concept of Education”, declares that “Narration (with the teacher as the narrator) leads the students to memorize mechanically the narrated content. Worse yet, it turns them into ‘containers,’ into ‘receptacles’ to be ‘filled’ by the teacher” (216). Freire’s statement implies that teaching utilizing the banking concept shifts the role of students as learners to robots that receive data and execute orders given by their programmers (teachers) but do not actually recognize the significance of the information. I agree with Freire 's interpretations because even though my role in high school was a student, my continuous encounters with banking
From how I was talking about how sometimes I just feel like I want to give up, well the reason that I won’t is because of education.Education to me, means a lot to me. Like I see education as a role model.education helps me through life.Education shows me what I could and can of the things I can do.Education is like the organs in your body, everything works together to form
opinion, education is essential to have success in life. When the main goal of life is purely
In Paulo Freire’s essay “The Banking Concept of Education” he talks about how in education there is no conversation between the teachers/professors and their students. In this essay there are a few points I do disagree with, such as that there are some class in which there cannot really be any conversation or discussion, for example mathematics cannot be disproven because there are theorems and concrete facts, so teachers and professors have to teach for memorization. Another reason I disagree with Freire’s way teaching is because in the banking concept Freire is against when teachers are just telling students things and they are regurgitating them, but some students learn better using memorization for learning in the class room and also when studying. The next point I disagree with in Freire’s essay is he doesn’t really look at it from the teachers stand point, because in the United States at least the teachers are now forced to only teach certain points in their subject because of all the standardize testing that they now have in place, specifically grade school. The last thing in Freire’s essay that I disagree with is how he seems to kind of put down teachers.
In reality, people with an education tend to be very successful while the people without an education tend to be unsuccessful. Education is a key factor that defines the basis of human-beings and lays the foundation for human development. It also plays a major role in creating a huge gap in the division within the social classes. This huge gap is due to unsuccessful education that exists in society. There are many factors that contribute to unsuccessful education which include expensive education, the quality of education, and disadvantaged individuals. Education is an important aspect of society that needs affordability, skilled and professional teachers, and resources in order to be successful and conform to societal standards.
The article “What True Education Should Do” written by Sydney Harris caught my attention the most out of all of the readings we were given. In his article, Sydney J. Harris, a writer for major Chicago newspapers, is defining what he thinks true education is. There are two different ways of being educated according to Harris. One of those is that students are stuffed with information and the other is eliciting information from inside of the students’ minds. He gives us a quite honest analogy to support his ideas. He states that students are like empty sausage casings and are being “stuffed” with information by our educators.
Education, we hear that word quite frequently but what does it mean? Miriam Webster’s Dictionary defines education as “the knowledge and development resulting from an educational process”. Everyone needs some education to be a success in life. The amount and types of education can vary but we all need the basics of reading, writing and math to be successful in life, and to be professional in the workplace. I see education as a step to success in the future. Education ideally results in effective communication, and a successful professional life. We have alternate ways of learning, and new things to learn as a result of technology.
“You will never know what you are doing until and unless you have done it.” ― Santosh Kalwar. (http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/education?page=11) Throughout the 18 years I’ve lived on Earth, I have learned one thing. Life is nothing but trial and error. You can only learn by learning. You can only experience by experiencing. All my life I took something so vital for granted; pushing it away because I was afraid. I allowed myself to be held back by my trials. I let myself become my problems. I never took an open opportunity like this to better myself, until now. “The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows.” ― Sydney J. Harris. (http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/education?page=11) My education is my future; a second chance I thought I’d never get. And I’m never turning back. That is what my education means to me.
In order to be an effective teacher there needs to be an understanding that we all learn differently, this means that no single teaching strategy is effective for all students/learners all the time. This makes teaching a complex process because you need to understand and meet the requirements of all of your learners. Students learn best when they aren’t asked to simply memorise information but when they form their own understandings of what is being taught. When a student has successfully learnt a new idea they are able to then intergrate this information with their previously learnt information and make sense of it. To be an effective teacher you need to work jointly with students to asses where they are at, be able to give feedback on how the student is going and ensure that they are understanding the lesson (Killen, 2013) According to Lovat and Smith (2003) students learning must result in a change in a student’s understanding of the information being taught. In order to show understanding they must be able to share this information with others and want to learn more (Killen, 2013). In order to have a deeper understanding of what is being taught they need to be aware of the relationship that exists between what they knew previously and the new information that is being learned (Killen, 2013).. Students need to be given goals that they can achieve in order to feel a sense of mastery over their own learning, this gives students motivation that they are able to complete tasks and to keep going.
Among many teaching styles and learning theories, there is one that is becoming more popular, the constructivist theory. The constructivist theory focuses on the way a person learns, a constructivist believes that the person will learn better when he/she is actively engaged. The person acts or views objects and events in their environment, in the process, this person then understands and learns from the object or events(P. Johnson, 2004). When we encounter a certain experience in our life, we think back to other things that have occurred in our life and use that to tackle this experience. In a lot of cases, we are creators of our own knowledge. In a classroom, the constructivist theory encourages more hands-on assignments or real-world situations, such as, experiments in science and math real-world problem solving. A constructivist teacher constantly checks up on the student, asking them to reflect what they are learning from this activity. The teacher should be keeping track on how they approached similar situations and help them build on that. The students can actually learning how to learn in a well-planned classroom. Many people look at this learning style as a spiral, the student is constantly learning from each new experience and their ideas become more complex and develop stronger abilities to integrate this information(P. Johnson, 2004). An example of a constructivist classroom would be, the student is in science class and everyone is asking questions, although the teacher knows the answer, instead of just giving it to them, she attempts to get the students to think through their knowledge and try to come up with a logical answer. A problem with this method of learning is that people believe that it is excusing the role of...
Education is essential to every student’s life as well as their future. Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. Learning involves a person acquiring the knowledge or skills that is being taught to them. Learning can occur through methods such as observation, listening or through hands on learning.
A person can be educated and not have schooling and can also have schooling and not be educated. Education is defined as the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a school or university. Students attend school for 7-8 hours a day, 5 days a week for sometimes 12+ years. The definition of education provides a clear explanation as to what education is. Education is deeper than the basic subjects that are taught in school. It provides the student with lifelong knowledge that can be utilized in their everyday lives as they progress in their academic and social lives. Educating a student is a part of the hidden curriculum that is unnoticed by the higher entities of education.
The idea of education has been a big part of each and every culture on earth. However, as we all know, there are many questions on what it means to be educated in the form of higher education: questions we, as students, must face sooner or later. Here I am, my junior year in college. In a couple of years, I will be either prolonging my education or out in the real world trying to make a living. I must ask myself these questions: What is the purpose of my higher education? What exactly am I learning? Is the education I am receiving here at the University of Arkansas going to be good enough for a future employer? If I am educated does that mean I am trained to do only one thing? Am I one-dimensional?
