In this report we the showcase the infamous automated baggage system project failure at the new Denver International Airport. How its failure delayed the airport opening 4 times and the impact it had. The causes that it lead to its failure in aspect of software quality, integration, and evolution. At the end of the report we view how the developers attempt to fix the problem with software maintenance and integration. Also, a recommendation is made on how software evolution could have helped the project.

BACKGROUND

In 1995 the city of Denver built a huge new airport that represents a model of future airports. The international Denver airport was planned to have an automated baggage handling system instead of the traditional manual system. The baggage system is considered critical system since fast loading and unloading baggage are needed to maintained flight schedule. Switching to automatic baggage handling the aircraft turnaround time was to be reduced to as little as 30 minutes. There were many integrated interfaces to translate each of the airlines’ software language. [5] Another problem, is the design of the physical building structure and the baggage system were represented a single integrated system. The physical space and services such as the electrical supply were shared, so the designers of the physical building and the designers of the baggage system needed to work as one integrated team. This happened largely because the design of the building was started before the baggage system design was known. When the baggage system design started, the baggage system design team was limited to work within what was left for them of the physical building. [3]
