A dental hygienist is a very important role in any dental office. As stated by a dental assistant, “Dental hygienists work closely with the dentist as well as hands on with the patients. The dental hygienist uses a toothbrush to remove soft plaque from the teeth. Plaque is a soft coating on the teeth that contain bacteria. The bacteria can cause tooth decay and gum disease. The amount of plaque on the teeth gives the hygienist an idea of how well the daily brushing and flossing of the patient’s teeth are completed on a regular basis. Good oral hygiene is an essential part of nursing care and if left undone can lead to larger problems such as increased risk for pneumonia, tooth loss, mucosal lesions, and increased complications of comorbidities (Delgado, 2016). There needs to be a revision to the current oral care policy because oral hygiene is not being performed on the residents. This policy will benefit the patients and the facility. Patients will benefit from better oral hygiene thus reducing the risk of overall infection. The facility will benefit by saving money related unnecessary spending on items such as antibiotics and intravenous (IV) supplies.

A few weeks ago when I went to the dentist I asked my hygienist a bunch of questions while she was working on my teeth. She was telling me how she has always had a passion for teeth and she would never trade her job for any other. She started off as a dental assistant and decided to go back to school to become a dental hygienist. I asked her what her favorite parts of the job were, she said she has great benefits and that my dentist pays her as much as a doctor would make. Some of her favorite parts of working in a dental office is that she has close relationships with her coworkers because of the size of the facility. She likes working as a hygienist better than an assistant because she is pretty much her own boss and can do things the way she prefers to do them.

(To have a real insight into the daily duties of a dentist, I set aside a period of time last summer where I could acquire some work experience.) I spent 2 weeks at a local general practice offering both private and NHS treatment. I witnessed the close relationships to which the dentist had created with his patients, personally I find meeting and working with new people on a daily basis provides quite a fun stimulating aspect to this career. Whilst shadowing my dentist I witnessed a number of complex procedures such as a dislodged wisdom tooth extraction and many root canal fillings. My experience at this practice showed me that dentistry is a career that is heavily dependent on dentist-patient interactions, alongside other collaborating staff to ensure the correct treatment is given in an efficient and effective manner. Even when you ask the dental assistant or your dentist, your still not able to witness the actual performance. When doing research about your procedure, there is a chance that your dentist may not follow that specific procedure. When I entered the dental field, I could understand more of the things that should be done to repair teeth.
I am applying to study dentistry because I know this is the career I would like to preform for the rest of my life. I am a reliable person, hard working and I have a great sense of responsibility.
