The results of the study indicate that the dementia group showed a significant increase in more omission errors and substitution errors when compared to younger adults, older adults, and individuals with mild cognitive impairments. The study also concluded that the dementia group engaged in more irrelevant task actions in comparison to the other groups. More specifically, the dementia group had a decrease in ability to complete everyday tasks accurately due to cognitive impairments. The researchers indicate that their findings support the criteria for dementia that require cognitive deterioration leave an individual helpless when completing everyday life activities. Physical exercise has been found to improve ones intellectual performance even after cognitive decline is present (Colocombe & Kramer, 2003). Also, it has been found that mental exercise can also improve ones intellectual ability after decline as well (Labouvie-Vief & Gonda, 1976; Willis, Tennstedt, Marsiske, et al., 2006). For instance a study by Schaie and his colleagues (1986) conducted a study to determine whether or not mental exercise in different areas was effective for individuals who were already showing cognitive decline or just for individuals who have not yet begun to decline. What the findings showed was that individuals who had already experienced cognitive decline, it was found that about half of the group gained significantly in their abilities, and about 40% gained back to their normal level of performance. As for the individuals who did not have any sings of decline in cognition, over one third of them had increased their abilities even beyond their previous levels (Schaie & Willis, 1986). This study is a representation that can be used to help caregivers understand the importance of keeping their elderly ones mentally active.
