Virgin Atlantic's Heathrow Airport and Airspace Virgin Atlantic’s operates from several hub airports in London. Its current home base airport is located at Heathrow in London, England. Currently, the company has two other major hubs in Gatwick and Manchester. However, Heathrow presently is at full capacity, and Gatwick is reaching full capacity in the near future. While various options are available, Virgin Atlantic and London’s commissioned officials are working to reach an agreement on the long-term solution to benefit the airline and the economy. Virgin Atlantic’s Heathrow airport reached full capacity in 2010 (Osborne, 2013). During 2009, stacking delay’s cause by holding at Heathrow Airport accounted for an estimated GBP 60 million with the average hold time of 7.6minutes ("SESAR SWIM Success," 2013). In order to tackle the airspace problem, the European Commission’s response was SESAR, “Single European Sky ATM (air traffic management) Research” ("SESAR," 2010, para. 1). It is the European air traffic control program “capable of ensuring safety and fluidity of air transport” ("SESAR," 2010, para. 1) for Heathrow and surrounding airports for over the next 30 years ("SESAR," 2010). The implementation of the program resulted in results of 25% of optimization and is expected to cut Heathrow’s holding time by more than 25% ("SESAR Efficiency," 2014).
