It is well recognized that rock songs often express the issues society faces in regards to defying convention. When you analyze the lyrics, these artists are portraying a storyline that most listeners can relate to, due to previous or current experiences. For example, Suicidal Tendencies “Institutionalized”, tells a story that all individuals can relate to, considering we all went through those gruesome teenage years. As you listen to “Institutionalized”, listeners are living an experience of a teenage boy, whose friends and family believe he is going insane. Continuing on, it is revealed that he is just the typical teenage boy going through hormonal changes. This song exemplifies how we often defy convention, due to the way the boy responds to these accusations. In the lyrics it’s stated, “They stuck me in an institution Said it was the only solution.“ (1:09-1:13) Taking personal experiences into account, this line shows how we are often faced with our parents, or peers, taking action on an issue that they are actually unaware about. Here, it states how he is institutionalized, due to the accusation of him going insane, when in reality the insanity is non-existent. Carl Strommen was born in 1940 and currently lives with his family in Long Island, New York. He graduated from Long Island University receiving a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and later went to The City College of New York where he studied music and received a Master of Arts in Music. He studied orchestration with Manny Albam and Rayburn Wright and composition with Stefan Wolpe. He currently has over twenty published arrangements for bands and wind ensembles. His popular arrangements and compositions are played all over the world.
There was a vocal recital on October 19th, 2017 at 7:30PM, held at the performance hall in Mountain view college. Alex Longnecker, a tenor vocalist and Imre Patkai, (pianist) played a series of homophonic textured songs, some being sung in German and others in English. The Three selected songs I will be writing about are, The Lincolnshire Poacher, The Plough Boy, and Im Wunderschonen Monat Mai. This performance played a total of 24 Pieces, composed by 4 composers, being Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ernest Chausson, Benjamin Britten, and Robert Schumann.
The live theatrical production I chose to see was 9 to 5 The Musical. The production was performed by Fayetteville Technical Community College’s very own Fine Arts Department. The musical is based on the film released by Fox in 1980. Collin Higgins adapted the film from the book 9 to 5 written by Patricia Resnick. It wasn’t until 2008 that the film was adapted to a theatrical production. The production was originally brought to broadway by Robert Greenbait and Dolly Parton wrote the lyrics and the music for the Musical. The run on broadway was very short but the production later toured in other countries around the around the world.
The Wiz is a musical/movie released in 1978 that was an adaptation of the popular film “Wizard of Oz”. It included several very popular stars of the time, which were Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Nipsey Russell. The movie set place in New York City where the main character, Dorothy, suddenly is swept by a tornado in the middle of a snowstorm. She later then found herself lost in a city she had no clue about and curious as to how she could return home. After meeting 3 other characters during her journey that share similarities, they all embarked on a trip to OZ to fix each of their problems. Throughout the movie characters apply their own soundtrack through singing songs in harmony that compliment the mood of each scene.
Artists write about what they know; they pull feelings from their heart and their songs relay what the artists’ emotions, whether it be of their hometown, their high school crush, or their experiences. Many artists that came to fame during the twentieth century have a fair share of experiences they share with us in the form of their songs. The twentieth century is comprised of the institution of slavery and its effects, war, gender norms, discrimination based on nationality, sex, race, etc., and countless events that sparked protests and uproars in the United States. “The House of the Rising Sun” is a classic song released by The Animals in 1964. This song had the use of two guitars, a drum set, and also a keyboard to create the music, and then the lead singer to sing the song. “The House of the Rising Song” has been sung in a countless number of versions and has also acquired many different titles to the song until The Animals released it. A cover to a song is when another artist sings a famous song but typically puts their own spin on it. This particular song has had over one-hundred covers and two famous ones are by Haley Reinhart and Five Finger Death Punch.
Mental illness is defined by Mayo Clinic as “disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior” (Mental Illness). When a person is labeled as mentally ill or when they exhibit unusual behavior (not related to mental illness) they are marked as different in society’s eye; this has been the condition for hundreds of years and it continues in society today. When a person is marked as different, it is thought they need to be “fixed” or made to conform somehow in order to be “normal” and to function within a normal society. Many times “fixing” people who are marked as mentally ill requires that they be institutionalized within controlled environments, such as psychiatric wards and asylums, or trapped within their own minds and controlled by medication. People who are different are often cut off from what is “normal” and are isolated from the rest of the social order. In Howl, Allen Ginsberg breaks the chains of isolation due to insanity by building a community with those who were in the same boat as him and those who read and travel with him through his journey of experiences.
Song lyrics have set off a great generation of our leisure time than reading poetic devices, therefore song lyrics are better than poetic devices. Song lyrics have dropped numerous lines that attach to us now a days and make us listen to the line over and over unlike poetic devices. Song Lyrics have so much meaning by word choice and by relations.”Mr. Rager” by Kid Cudi, is about people fed up with society and plan on taking a journey. “Dreams” by Edgar Allen Poe, is about a man who dreams of a greater life. Mr. Rager, the song by Scott Cudi, has a better meaning than Dreaming, the poem by Edgar Allen Poe, by personification, allusion, and symbolism.
In conclusion, I would like to state that even though this paper has marked a clear difference between what is perceived through the eyes of a witness as opposed to a research, the grunge movement, although a media commodity, an ironic mainstream movement whose philosophy was to oppose the mainstream in the first place, has left its mark on the music industry. It should, under no circumstance, be assumed that all there was to the grunge movement was a manipulation. It was the heart and soul of its audience, and remains quite so today, on an international basis. Not for its history, but for the content of its music.
The article “In Defense Cover Songs”, Don Cusic talks about his opinion on cover songs. His main point was to express the loss of cover song. He wants us to know that just because someone cover songs and it goes to their album does not make them less legitimate. Don Cusic is an author who wrote plenty of books. He typically wrote on songwriters and music. He also has succeeded in writing and he focuses on country music. Cover songs are songs that someone has sung, but they did not write it themselves. Many recording studios and some fans don’t accept singers who do not write their own songs. Artists are being required to be just more than a writer or a singer. Studios and fans are putting a huge demand on the artist. Don expresses that even though a person does not write and sing a song they are just as important as anyone
In today’s society, people are taught to conform to the masses in order to fit in; however, it is imperative that one’s individuality is maintained, as it preserves their identity and encourages uniqueness. For example, in the song, “Outside of a Small Circle of Friends”, Phil Ochs discusses the social norm where people are too afraid to stand out, often times, leading them to pay little to no attention to the wellbeing of others. Instead of adhering to their own judgment and moral values, the person in the song continues to abide by the notions of the rest of the group. In closing, the undoubtable influence of music, more specifically of Rock ‘n’ Roll on American society is responsible for a number of changes to the status quo. These range from sexual liberation and racial desegregation all culminating with other influences to create an intergenerational identity. Despite the desperate attempts of older generations to smother these influences, these changes ultimately shaped the years that followed, molding the country into what it is today. Along the way these changes as well as individual involvement in them has also eased the lives of many through empowerment and a feeling of community and purpose. Despite a lull and renewal Rock ‘n’ Roll continues to serve as an agent of influence and change in today’s youth culture and continues to burn in the heart of past generations of loyal fans.
The genre of pop rock has taken the music industry by storm, giving record companies enormous amounts of power and endless financial success along with a way to reproduce it. Owing its popularity to the “light” nature and simplistic, yet catchy melodies, pop music is one of the broadest genres. There’s no way of clearly defining parameters as to what distinguishes a pop music song from other genres. This is largely due to the genre's’ reliance on popularity. Pop music has taken many forms over the decades, keeping characteristics through each generation it passes through.
