The Word Without a Definition
It is virtually impossible to ask two different people “what is love,” and expect the exact same answer or at least something similar. Love has one of, if not the loosest definition in the entire dictionary. Technically, love is “an intense feeling of deep affection.” However, everybody has their own meaning about what love means to them. Love can be expressed through words, money, sexual action, and even violence. People often argue about what love means, even though it is meaningless. When larger pop culture figures such as artists, poets, songwriters, or any other popular individuals with a following tries to explain what love is through their work, they usually are not criticized too heavily because that is

Everyone must rely on somebody else at another point in time. If a person is depended on at a consistent rate, a bond and admiration will form. That bond can sooner or later turn into a thing called love. Love is a common used term for affection. Certain actions that take place in everyday life can develop a relationship of love. In the 2016 movie Passengers, a man, whose name is Jim Preston, and woman, Aurora Lane, are stranded on a futuristic spaceship that continues to malfunction, putting the two in danger. In the climax of the film, Jim almost dies to save Aurora and the ship. In many cases, this action was in spite of love. However, can love only being proven if it takes a life-threatening incident to do so? In some eyes, yes. A relatively decent amount of people don’t realize how much somebody loves them until it is shown through an act of sacrifice. Although, for the other groups in society that does not believe action is all it takes to show “love,” they have their own separate …show more content…
Everyone is different. No two people are exactly the same. That is one big part as to why love is such a complex term. If one hundred are asked about their opinion of love, one hundred different responses will be said. Everyone’s internal emotions and morals determine their meaning of love. If one man shows his love and affection for someone by physically or emotionally abusing that someone, that is his way of showing his love and affection. Even though many say that abuse is not a show of love, and I would tend to agree, that opinion has to do with morals of the person judging, which is completely different than the abuser. This is where the argument comes full circle. This is where people in society need to accept that their definition of love is right because it is the only one they comprehend. People can relate or partially agree with what love is to others, but someone’s self made meaning incorporates that person’s beliefs and opinions on the
It is rather difficult to speak of love in an original sense today. If someone were to ask an individual to define love, a common response would be, “love cannot be explained, it cannot be defined”. This answer would be acceptable if love was equally felt for and between all people. But anyone would have to agree to the fact that there are different degrees and levels of love. Someone would not love his or her family members the same way they would his or her spouse. Love varies between different levels of action and feeling, and a definition of each level must be discovered in order to understand its varying power. Martin Luther King Jr. felt the need to address this particular issue when discussing the principles behind the non-violent student movement for civil rights. King felt that a working idea of love was the keystone to the philosophy of a non-violent protest. Turning to the Greek language and idea of love, King was able to define three particular levels, eros, philia, and agape. His goal was to take one of these three levels and use it as the definitive quality of the non-violent movement.
The Book of the Duchess is said to be a tribute, a eulogy of sorts. But as with any other story, there is more than one level to The Book of the Duchess. One of the things Geoffrey Chaucer seemed to do in The Book of the Duchess was to define refined love.
he Power of Love Love is a powerful emotion that affects everyone at some time in their lives. According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, love is defined as a feeling of strong and constant affection for someone(1). Love can refer to the feelings between a couple in a romantic relationship, or it can refer to the affection one would have with a friend. When love is shown, each person cares about the other. Sometimes, love can be hypnotizing, causing one to do something they would not do normally.
What is love? The age-old question arises once more. In truth, a universal definition has not been agreed upon, but generally one can define love as “an indication of adoration” or an “an ineffable feeling of intense attraction shared in interpersonal and sexual relationships.” Love can be directed towards kin, a lover, oneself, nature, or humanity- but regardless that love in an emotional sense is eternal. Some fall into love, and some claim they fall out. Love should be endless, lasting, and pure, but half of the time that love ends up being a sham. There is solid record of this false love- love that is meant to look pure- in the famous writings The Lottery and To His Coy Mistress.
What is love? It seems to be a pretty simple word, but there is so much meaning behind it. Love is difficult to define, difficult to measure, and frequently difficult to understand. Love is what great writers write about; great philosophers wonder about; singers sing about. Love is a very powerful emotion. Love saves; love conquers; love creates. Love is passion that cannot be controlled. Both poems we have read, Waiting for Icarus and One Art, tell us how love alters human minds and hearts, making people in love struggle with the desire to remain in control of themselves and with the scary feeling of “losing themselves”.
Our society uses the term "love" far too lightly. Having been guilty of this offense myself, I admit my guilt. I often say, "I love Mexican food," or, "I love my truck." Love, however, is not just a happy feeling we get when something nice pleases us. Love is a verb. Love is the action of giving yourself totally to one person without expecting anything in return. Love is being willing to put aside your own needs in order to meet the needs of others. Giving up your weekend trip to the beach in order to take care of your sick mother is one example of love. A destitute mother giving up her one piece of bread to feed her sick little boy is another example of love. The ultimate expression of love is being willing to lay down your own life in the place of another. Love is giving, not getting.
Poets and philosophers for centuries have been trying to answer the question, what is love? Love has an infinite number of definitions, which vary from one person to another. Love cannot be measured by any physical means. One may never know what true love is until love it- self has been experienced. What is love? A four letter word that causes a person to behave in a way that is out of character. What is love? A first kiss, childhood crushes on a teacher or friend’s mom. What is love? A choice that people make by putting their partner’s wishes, desires and needs above everything else. What is love? The act of forgiveness, the infatuation with someone, the communication between two people. What is love? A friendship that turned into a lifelong commitment, that special someone who has vowed to spend the rest of their lives to honor and protect, to love each other “till death do you part.” When in love nothing else in the world matters. According to the online Encarta Dictionary love is the passionate feeling of romantic and sexual desire and longing for somebody. Poets and philosophers may never know what love really is, and we may never truly understand the question what is love.
"I wanna love you and treat you right; I wanna love you every day and every night: We'll be together with a roof right over our heads; We'll share the shelter of my single bed; We'll share the same room, yeah! - for Jah provide the bread. Is this love - is this love - is this love - Is this love that I'm feelin'?"--- Bob Marley. Bob Marley wrote and sang about love just like hundreds of people before him. His idea of true love was sharing with someone in order to meet the basic needs and spiritual way of life. The security of a relationship is one important part of a complex number of needs that have to be met for truelove to exist. The Merrian Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, defines “truelove” as “one truly beloved or loving”(1343). The meaning of truelove is not as simple as the dictionary would lead people to think. For the person who has not yet become educated in true love will find themselves on a wonderful quest. The most powerful declaration one can make to another person is a pledge of love. Most individuals will desire the intimate affection that a special someone can provide. Is there such a thing as truelove? Difficult as the answer is to find, many people have ideas about truelove. By comparing ideas of love between women and men, looking at religious love, investigating chemical love, and love in marriage will show what the meaning of true love is today.
Love is said to be one of the most desired things in life. People long for it, search for it, and crave it. It can come in the form of partners, friends, or just simply family. To some, love is something of a necessity in life, where some would rather turn a cold shoulder to it. Love can be the mixture of passion, need, lust, loyalty, and blood. Love can be extraordinary and breathtaking. Love being held so high can also be dangerous. Love can drive people to numerous mad things with it dangerously so full of craze and passion.
The word love is usually misused or misinterpreted. There are numerous meanings and definitions to this overly used word. Not many of them make much sense to me. Love is a feeling of complete bliss. Love is something that can’t be touched or bought, but is something that is much better than money and earthly objects. I can stay here and describe love all day long and still have so much more to say about this word days later. Love isn’t a word that should be used lightly, but usually is. I believe that love is the most commonly used, but most understood word ever known
Love is having compassion for others, sharing feelings and your life with another person, as well as, having faith in others and forgiving those we love for the any errs that they may make. Most of all, we must be committed to those we love. Of course, this is only my opinion. No matter how long I try to explain what love is ultimately it is up to you, the reader, to define what love is to you. So let me leave you now with the words of the great Humanist Erich Fromm, "Can anything be learned about the art of love, except by practicing it?"
Love is formed from all over and everybody has their own interpretations of love. Love is defined in many different ways all in many different place from all around. A question that would be hard to define accurately is , what is the real meaning of love? Love in a summed up way can be described as Love is a variety of different feelings, states, and attitudes that ranges from interpersonal affection to pleasure. You can always love and it be a different way of loving. For example love like a friend, or love sexually. Just like in greek. They have multiple different ways of expressing and explaining love.
Love by definition is an emotion explored in philosophy, religion, and literature, often as either romantic love, the fraternal love of others, or the love of God based on the definition found in The Encarta Encyclopedia. As I explored the definition by means of the Internet, books, and articles I noticed the definitions changed quite a bit, but yet had the same basic understanding. The definition I found in The Encarta Encyclopedia was probably the most simple and most basic. It refers to love in the whole aspect, which is Godly, fraternal, and romantic. All in which can only be defined by one word and that it love.
Love is an experience that some people, for lack of a better word, fall in love with. Some people are simply in love with being in love. Others on the other hand, see others love and happiness and use it against their own relationships. Seeing other people happy and doing well, makes them angry at their own lives that they have yet to find a deep, true love. Throughout our lives our views on love change, just like the people around us do.
What is love? Love is a very special and meaningful word to each human being. Each human being has his/her own thoughts about love to guide himself/herself to land safely and smoothly into the kingdom of Love. Without this preconceived idea of love, people would be acting like a blind person searching for the light with thousand of obstacles in front of him.
