Explanatory Essay: Courage
Has anyone ever called you courageous? Or have you never had courage? This is a question that sometimes, you need to ask yourself. And if someone hasn’t, that's ok. This will show what courage means, what it means to have it, and where you can find it within yourself and in the world around you. Courage from examples like this can be summed up by a quote by Eleanor Roosevelt that states, “You gain strength, courage and confidence with every experience in which you stop to look fear in the face….” This, to me, means that when you face fears in the face , even if it is not successful, you gain confidence and power and you know you are able to do it which can help to face even more fers in the future. Courage means to have the ability find

Everyone needs courage to get through tough times and to pursue their dreams. One example of real world courage that maybe the most important, is the people and soldiers fighting for our country. These amazing bunch of people volunteer to stand up to other countries and keep the U.S.’ freedom that they have had since they got it, while risking their lives in the process. The know that there is a good chance that they can get severely injured, or even die, but they still want to go and help our country. They could just at any time run away, or give up, or cower away, but they have the courage to get through the tough training that is needed and are willing to go onto that battlefield that they know could be their resting place at any moment. Especially with all the new weapons and bombs being made, war is maybe the most dangerous it has ever been at this time, and people can kill others much easily with better long range weapons. But there are still those few who have the courage to fight for our country. All of these, are examples of courage through arts, the real world, and personal
There are many other things that take courage to do including public speaking, standing up for those who are unable to do it themselves, and even getting up on a stage and performing in front of a large crowd. For many, public speaking is extremely hard and can be quite debilitating, and for someone to ignore these fears, be courageous, and speak from the heart to a large crowd can be quite an accomplishment. There are also many courageous men and women in the military that are willing to give their lives for the defense of their nation. Some view this as the ultimate form of courage, and in some cases it is, but what takes more courage, dying for a cause or living to be there to pick up the pieces and clean up the mess? Showing true courage is not always the most popular, glamorous, or easy thing to do. Even something as simple as being a man, who stands up in front of a crowd to read poetry, while dressed like a woman, can be one of the most courageous things of
Courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. Courage is strength in the face of pain or grief. Throughout the course of World War 2, there were many people who acted in a courageous manner, as portrayed by Markus Zusak in his novel 'The Book Thief'. Weather it was putting their entire life on the line just to save some strangers from possible torture, hiding illegal people in their own houses with the possibility of being killed or smuggling thousands of people out of the Ghettos and into hiding places at the risk of death, there were some extraordinarily courageous humans in World War 2 who not only saved other people lives, but they did it all at
To me having courage makes me feel stronger than ever. Courage is one of the things that helped me join NJROTC, and it helps me get through the days. Before I learned what courage was or even used it, I was too shy to even say my name out loud. But when I joined NROTC they helped me break my shyness. And now I see clear, I know in the future courage will help me stand up and make it to my goals in life.
One of the best explanations of courage is the following by Maya Angelou: “One isn’t necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential. Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtues with consistency. We can’t be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.” Her explanation summarizes all that courage can lead you to who you are in life. Courage is standing up for what you believe in, despite disapproval, pain, fear, uncertainty, or intimidation. Courage is challenging what is normal. Courage is giving voice to those who cannot speak for themselves. Courage is using whatever power available to educate the world about injustice. Courage is following your heart even when the path is not known. Courage is trying after failing.
There are various ways people define what courage is. It might be public speaking or saving a life. Many people believe courage is risking a life to save another. Soldiers are also considered a synonym to courage. However, not everyone saves a life or delivers a speech daily. Still, what is the real definition of courage? In the book To kill a Mockingbird By Harper Lee courage is,” When you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see through no matter what.” (Lee pg.149) This quote defines what real courage is. Mrs Dubose, Boo Radley and Atticus displays courage and teaches others a lesson of how to be courageous in a civilised determined way. They all knew they had a high chance of losing to their goals yet, they still went at it with their all never giving into the pressure.
“Courage - a perfect sensibility of the measure of danger, and a mental willingness to endure it.” Courageous people understand the danger that they face when they act how they do. That is what courage is all about. Many historical events occur due to people having the courage to do what they think is right, or because of those who use their courage to do what they want. Having the courage to stand alone in one’s beliefs may be one of the hardest thing a person can do.
Courage can have a huge impact in decisions people make in their daily lives and in the novel.
Thank you for instilling the value of courage in me. Aristotle would say that courage is the “mean state in relation to feelings of fear and confidence” (Nicomachean Ethics, 1115a7-8). He argues that all people experience feelings of fear, but it is the approach that they take towards the thing that they are fearful of that determines their courage. A courageous person feels fear and acts in relation to fearful things. What Aristotle has said about courage, accurately summarizes what you have taught me. Courage is needed in order to live well as a human being and to live a good life.
Courage is a strong word, feeling and thought. It is grace under pressure. Courage is doing something that is discomforting to make others better. It is having mental strength and doing something you never thought could be done. Courage is a trait, a trait hard to show for it looks different for everyone. In To Kill a Mockingbird, you can see courage through the actions of Atticus Finch, Mrs. Dubose and Boo Radley because they all did something that was out of their comfort zone. They are faced with a challenge and they accept it for what it is. They do not hide away when they face problems or bumps on the road.
Another example of courage is during the old serum gang scene, Atticus Finch, the father of Scout and Jem, sat in front of his client in his jail cell, reading the newspaper when a group of farmers who have a reputation of being intoxicated approached him. The gang threatened Atticus, but Atticus stayed strong, he maintained his calm collected attitude and tried to reason with the gang. Scout described the encounter as: “We saw Atticus look up from his newspaper. He closed it, folded it deliberately, dropped it in his lap, and pushed his hat to the back of his head. He seemed to be expecting them.” (201). In This scene, Atticus maintained his cool and used slow easy to follow actions to control the situation that he knew was inevitable. He demonstrates courage because he calmly folded his newspaper and stood up slowly which demonstrates bravery because this shows that he is standing up to the gang, instead of fleeing from the danger and saving himself. This is a dangerous situation because he knows the gang have weapons in their possession which is a precursor to violence and danger. Bravery is also demonstrated is that he tries to reason with the gang even though it is like reasoning with the reaper. In danger there are two types of people the bystander and the person who takes the matter into their own
A specific example of the courage within this film was when Robert Lincoln finally admitted to his father that he had returned in hopes of joining the forces. He said to his father that “[he has] to do this! And [he] will do it, and [he doesn’t] need [his father’s] permission to enlist!” (Robert Lincoln). This courage brought Robert what he wanted, and that is what courage did in this movie.
Courage is not just found in the veteran soldier who can display shiny medals or in the policeman who bravely risks his life for justice as portrayed on television or in films. Suicide is the antithesis of courage. It is not an elementary school boy who agrees to fight, but he who can stand up against it. A six year old girl who ventures out on her bicycle for the first time displays as much courage as a young man who witnesses a murder and volunteers to testify in court.
To have courage is to look forward and see nothing clearly, and then taking that step into murkiness because it is necessary. To march into a burning building, to fall in love with a stranger, or to speak up against the people we treasure and simultaneously disagree with all take courage. One might die, or break one’s heart, or lose everything. There’s no way to know, and that’s terrifying. And yet, people do those things every day.
What does courage show? Courage shows that people in this world are selfless, brave and heroic. People put themselves before others and keep people safe. People do it everyday, whenever a firefighter steps into a burning house they put themselves in danger. If you think courage is pathetic, let me see what you can do. Can you get cut by a machete and keep fighting? Can you step into a fire and save people? Can you stand in front of people shooting just for your country? People all around the world is helping others, be kind, be nice and always know people are there to help. Courage shows a lot of
There are two distinct types of courage such as physical and moral courage. Physical courage represents the quality of bravery which includes physical pain, hardship, death or threat of death. On the other hand, moral courage is the ability which shows the power to act rightly in the popular opposition, shame, scandal, discouragement, or personal loss. Moreover, it sets the things on mind to fight against all fears. Sacrificing lives for fighting against fears is the highest example of courage because only few number of people can do
