Everyone has their own perception of beauty. The attractive attributes in something or someone is based on an opinion. In other countries and cultures their definition of beauty might be different than others. What my culture considers beautiful can be repulsive to other cultures. There are features on a person’s body such as, white teeth, freckles, moles, or clear skin making that person unique. On the other hand, a person can be considered beautiful because their personality is delightful. Massy’s, “A Grotesques Old Woman” is the perfect example of the proverb “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

According to Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary- Eleventh Edition, beauty is “the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit.” (page 108 of Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary) But what is beauty really? How does one rationalize its complexity?

As stated by ‘The Duchess’, Margaret Wolfe Hungerford’s famous quote “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” As a result, beauty can describe as an inspiring view present in everything that can be seen. To begin, beauty can be viewed in a building as large and extravagant as the white house to the small hometown market or even in the sight of a single flower to a field filled with a million flowers. Also, beauty can be seen in the sunrise over the peaks of the mountains and also in the sunset glowing across a calm lake surrounded by the bright colors of the fall trees. Furthermore, people have physical beauty, which can be found in a person’s features, figure, or complexion. In the poem “Beauty & Dress” by Robert Herrick he explains the beauty he sees in his wife. Herrick states,
Webster’s Dictionary defines beauty as, “The quality of being physically attractive; the qualities in a person or a thing that give pleasure to the senses or the mind; a beautiful woman.” But what really is beauty? Is beauty a quality that some are born with, or is it achieved through the use of makeup and beauty products that one could buy? Beauty is so much more than caking on tons of makeup to look beautiful on the outside. Beauty is when a person, male or female, possesses three important qualities: kindheartedness, self-respect, and courage.
The limitations of the word beauty allows society to think women are just another pretty face, they can’t accomplish as much as men, and it causes many women’s self-esteem to be low. Beauty is denoted early on when mothers and fathers tell their little girls how beautiful they are. It may seem harmless to tell little girls they are

There is a saying “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.” What one individual considers beautiful may not be beautiful to another. Many people in this world have their own definition of what beauty is. Beauty can come from inside or the outside. To me, beauty is not only something that pleases the eyes. Beauty is a quality that pleases or delights the senses or mind. Unfortunately, society makes it nearly impossible to see our own beauty. Most girls are inclined to take a quick look into a compact mirror or run a few fingers through their hair, sizing themselves up with the nearest advertisement featuring a flawless bottle blonde. Some may go a bit further, running an endless list of insecurities

Although many people focus on physical beauty, inner beauty is more important because it is permanent and a representation of a person’s true self.
