Joy is that indescribable feeling that has no material compulsion associated with it. Joy is the Sentinel that is the permanent guard when happiness has left its post ― temporarily.

308. “Joy” comprehends “happiness,” but “happiness” may not comprehend “joy.” Joy is a spiritual attribute, and happiness is a material attribute. Material things satisfy the outer self, but the inner self can only be satisfied when it experiences joy.

309. For many, “Joy” is a familiar term, but it is not attributably to happiness because happiness for many is a material compulsion. Yet, no form of material compulsion can explain the “joy” that radiates within. Practice these spiritual attributes loving, caring, giving, and sharing daily, and an overwhelming “joy” will spring up in your life. Happiness is a material imperative. It has a natural connection to that which is external, hence the tendency to give or receive something tangible to enter a temporary state of happiness.

311. Joy helps us to overcome daily challenges though we may become temporarily unhappy with a particular situation. It could be surmised that a particular mixture of happiness and joy is experienced in the material realm, when receiving a gift or celebrating a significant event, such as marriage.

312. We agreed that “joy” is a spiritual attribute, because of its persuasive power, but “joy” needs nurturing to remain uppermost in our mind. People can be unhappy with a situation, but still maintain their “joy,” which comes from knowing that God is in control, despite the challenging circumstances.
