On those days where everything seems wrong and everything is pointless faith in tomorrow can keep you going and when the world seems to fall apart faith in others can be the glue that holds it all together. The definition is “complete trust in someone or something.” This idea seemingly manages to relive the pain of stress and make life worth something. Faith is only as strong as the bearer, but when fully exercised it can be stronger than hope. Where hope is only an expectation and desire for something to happen faith is a complete trust it will and when you believe something will happen with all your heart and you put the work forward to see that it does nothing can stop you. On that day were life seems to be plotting against your faith in tomorrow will not only make your current situation less unbearable but will also provide a better tomorrow. A long time ago I was in a position where my life seemed to be inverted. I was in major trouble with my parents, but I had faith in tomorrow and all would work out ok and sure enough it did. Every day from then on out got brighter and brighter and with that I learned that as long as you have faith in tomorrow and totally ignore all negativity things will be good. That is one of the cool things about faith. When used you will block out negativity and bad things won’t affect you because the idea of the next day, year, and decade are so bright nothing bad now can bring you down and if you can’t be brought down how can the next day, year, and decade not be brighter? The processes are of sorts a paradox. That things can only grow brighter. If you believe in a brighter future than you make today brighter and then the next day the processes repeats, making an unending cycle of brighter and brighter days. If you were to take a survey on views of faith, you would come up with a million different definitions. To me, faith is taking risks in situations where there is no fear of the outcome. Faith is confidence, sureness, and bravery. If you have no faith, then you have no reason to go out in the world and survive. Faith is also a positive mindset and energy you embody. According to the book, “What is Faith?”, the author, Terrence W. Tilley feels that faith is a relationship between the one who has faith and the irreducible energizing source of meaning and center of value in one’s life. In the definition, “One” means the object of faith and the relationship between them. He takes the concept of faith from a late writer, David Foster Wallace, to key point his argument in the book. Wallace’s concept was that we don’t understand what faith is and how faith shapes the course of our lives. Tilley supports his claim by discussing the common misunderstandings of faith.
Nothing symbolizes faith more than living everyday life and believing that all things are possible. When faith is executed, it brings out the best in people and the human spirit. It becomes a shelter from “the dust.” It was complicated to describe the human spirit how it powers our ability to forgive without also covering faith and hope. As mentioned before, they are all interconnected and cannot be separated.
“Truth is information which has been clearly proved, or affirmed, or verified… standing firm no matter whether it yields returns or not,” Václav Havel states on his views of truth. Part of faith is trusting in God and standing firm in the faith and church, yet learning about what you affirm when talking about faith. The truth of faith can be confusing and hard to understand in varying points of the Christian faith. Typically, these confusions occur when the truth of faith does not line up with events, actions, or thoughts about what you wanted to believe the nature of the truth of faith is. My belief paper talked about how its hard to always trust that God is there in the hard times as the path you are going on isn’t always what you want, but by relying on God, things can turn around. By trusting in God, the path becomes present. In order to trust in God, one must have a foundation in full faith in the church, trinity, and sacraments.
Hope is the expectation and the desire for an event to happen. For many people, having hope is to see a reality with a positive feeling. From hope, faith comes in. Having faith in something unrealistic motivates people to keep moving forward and try the best of their abilities to make something happen. Most of today’s religions, especially Christianity, based most of their doctrine on the faith of salvation from Jesus Christ‘s sacrifice and the hope of living for eternity, if we obey the laws of God in accordance with the Bible.
In my opinion Paul Tillich makes the most valid point regarding the nature of religious beliefs as defined by him in “What faith is?” Religious beliefs have faith as its underlying principle. Tillich defines faith as “the state of being ultimately concerned and that the dynamics of faith are the dynamics of man’s ultimate concern” (Tillich1). Man has many concerns which encompass his day to day survival, however; unlike other creatures his concerns include matters that are social, political and spiritual in nature. Man’s quest to find answers to these concerns that transcend matters of day to day physical existence is addressed in the realm of spirituality which Tillich and other Theologians define as faith.
Faith is believed to be one of the most important elements attached to the life of a human being. Faith brings meaning to life. It is the essence that ties a person to life no matter the struggle encountered. Whenever some one looses faith in the people of their society, all he has felt is a religious believe which can be translated into “faith in God(s)';. In the stories “Bontsha the Silent'; and “Gimpel the Fool'; by Isaac Loeb Peretz and Isaac Bashevis Singer respectively, the protagonists are victims of tremendous sufferings, where faith is the only way out. However, the faith focused by both authors differ somewhat. Peretz prioritizes faith in the divine, while Singer elaborates faith in man around their protagonists.
Throughout history, humanity has found a guide. It can be seen as many things, a light at the end of the tunnel, a force pushing one forward, or even a lifeline. There are many ways to describe such a concept but, it can be simplified down to one word, hope. Hope can be defined in many different ways but, most widely can be defined as a feeling of expectation or desire for a certain thing to happen. In life and literature, hope can be the most powerful force in a person's life.
It is the ambition of getting what you desire, no matter the odds you are facing. To have hope, means you have perseverance. The idea of hope belongs to many people, it belonged to the Pilgrims as they sailed to the new world. They had hope in a new beginning, and a new place where they could worship freely without persecution. Hope belonged to the Founding Fathers, they had a hope for a new, successful country where the citizens had their own liberties. As Abraham Lincoln said, “My dream is of a place and a time where America will once again be seen as the last best hope of earth.” Hope also belongs to us now, the new generation. In the first chapter of The Basic, we explore different aspects of faith. We learned that Faith could be understood in many different ways. Faith can be described as the concept of believing in the existence of God, and also trusting in the Lord. John Calvin, on the other hands, have his own definition of faith. Calvin stated his belief, “Now we shall have a right definition of faith if we say that it is a steady and sure knowledge of the divine benevolence towards us, which is founded upon the truth of the gracious promise of God in Christ, and is both revealed to our minds and sealed in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.” Calvin definition illustrates the idea of Trinitarian. He describes faith to each of the three persons of the Trinity; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Calvin said that faith is a “steady and certain knowledge of the divine benevolence towards us,” he is trying to prove God’s reliability. The
...nnecting our own situations involving this essential question to pieces of literature connects to the human condition; if we have experienced the same feelings, it is tremendously more applicable. It is safe to say that most of us could relate to life not going exactly the way we imagined. However, you cannot dwell on that and stay in a negative place. Thinking in this manner will certainly not call for an advantageous outcome. But being confident in a positive outcome can really make those dealings actually bearable. It is truly imperative to keep a constructive mindset during those dreadful times no matter what you have to endure.
Once one obtains this hope, the difficulty of Christianity shifts from the foolishness of believing myths to the stupidity of doing what they say. This is my challenge, for God has revealed His will plainly and has promised to help His adopted children understand His Word, the Bible. Once a person agrees to accept the entire Bible as God presents it in the Bible, the test of faith (or mere hope) comes. A mere hoper won't bother (or dare) to keep exactly what God says; a person with true faith will not only try but succeed when he does.
In many aspects of our lives, the use of faith as a basis for knowledge can be found. Whether it is faith in the advice of your teacher, faith in a God or faith in a scientific theory, it is present. But what is faith? A definition of faith in a theory of knowledge context is the confident belief or trust in a knowledge claim by a knower, without the knower having conclusive evidence. This is because if a knowledge claim is backed up by evidence, then we would use reason rather than faith as a basis for knowledge . If we define knowledge as ‘justified true belief’, it can be seen that faith, being without justification, can never fulfill this definition, and so cannot be used as a reliable basis for knowledge. However, the question arises, what if a certain knowledge claim lies outside of the realm of reason? What if a knowledge claim cannot be justified by empirical evidence and reasoning alone, such as a religious knowledge claim? It is then that faith allows the knower to decide what is knowledge and what is not, when something cannot be definitively proved through the use of evidence. When assessing faith as a basis for knowledge in the natural sciences, the fact arises that without faith in the research done before us, it is impossible to develop further knowledge on top of it. Yet at the same time, if we have unwavering faith in existing theories, they would never be challenged, and so our progress of knowledge in the natural sciences would come to a standstill. Although I intend to approach this essay in a balanced manner, this essay may be subject to a small degree of bias, due to my own non-religious viewpoint.
