Learning to read is a complex way of training the brain to understand connections of symbols and meanings to develop a natural way of obtaining information. Phonological awareness is an umbrella term representing phonemic awareness, decoding, comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary. People who are deaf or hard of hearing are missing an important sense used when learning to read. For example, grapheme-phoneme correspondence is a huge factor when learning to read which correlates with print-sound mapping. Without access to the sounds of letters, the majority of Deaf readers are at a third or fourth grade reading level (Nielsen, D. C., & Luetke-Stahlman, B., 2002).
One of the first steps of learning to read is understanding how letters and sounds correspond to each other. (Goldin-Meadow, S., & Mayberry, R. Have you ever felt like there was nothing that you can do for your child? In this book, Deaf Like Me, by Thomas S. Spradley and James P. Spradley, I can see the journey that Lynn’s parents took to get her help. (Spradley & Spradley, 1978). This book was an excellent read. I really liked the way that they described the ways they tried to help Lynn to understand the world around her. The book, is a great asset for any family that might be unexpectedly put into a situation that they know nothing about such as a deaf child.

Ben Bahan, the narrator, is a deaf man from New Jersey whom was raised by deaf parents and a hearing sister. After spending an immense amount of time studying American Sign Language (ASL) he moved on to now become an assistant professor at Gallaudet University in the Deaf studies Department. Deaf like Me is book written by Thomas and Louise Spradley. It tells the story of Lynn, Thomas’ daughter and the family’s hardships as they learned to deal with the harsh reality that Lynn was profoundly deaf. Thomas and Louise’s son Bruce had contracted German Measles as a child and later it was found that Louise had also contracted measles early on in her pregnancy. The parents learned of the dangerous risks German measles posed to the baby during pregnancy and all the complications it could cause, but when Lynn was born she passed all the hearing tests at the hospital and was deemed a perfectly normal baby. Although babies are born without language, they learn to communicate by listening to the world around them. Language is crucial for the development of a child. By the time the child is school age he or she should have amassed some sort of vocabulary without any instructional lessons. Children pick up grammar, language, and meaning from the people around them. No one should be denied a language. We use language to express our feelings, state our needs and say what’s on our minds. Without language it would be like we are in a prison in our own heads with no means on how to communicate with other people. This can lead to frustration, resentment, and uncontrolled behaviors.

It is very important to teach phonemic awareness because it the start of teaching the students how to read. This lesson taught me about all the steps it takes to teach students about phonemic awareness. It’s something that can’t be done in one class. Phonemic awareness has for stages, word, syllable, onset rime, and phoneme. All these steps are crucial for learning how to read. This lesson taught me a lot about phonemic awareness and it’s a lesson I’ll be using in the near future when I begin
The fresh wound didn’t seem like it would be such a problem until I saw the blood trickling out. Sure, when I had cut my self by grabbing a piece of saw palmetto, I felt my skin ripping and quickly retracted my right hand. However, my want for adventure to explore the tree island overcame the small bit of pain I felt. An adrenaline rush helped me overcome all of the annoyances pushing through the dense brim of the island, like palmetto leaves and spider webs, as well as the myriad of other obstacles upon finally penetrating.

I have attended a local deaf church for a deaf event. The church that I attended was named Orange County First Assembly. It's located in Santa Ana and the date I went was November 26. It was the same week of thanksgiving so, I was invited by a friend of mine. Throughout this event I made a few observations that I notice and I was really intrigued by some that I’ve seen. So, I’ll explain some of my observations that I encountered.
To be a successful interpreter, one has to have a firm grasp of American Sign Language (ASL), but interpreting goes far beyond basic ASL fluency. “Interpreting is an active process” (Wilcox & Shaffer, 2005, p. 28), one which involves having to constantly make decisions about speakers’ and signers’ intentions, source and target utterances, message meaning and form construction, and the implications of personal choices and actions on the consumers. The amount of responsibility that is on the shoulders of interpreters is immense, and may be quite intimidating for a first-year interpreting student such as myself. When a person thinks of an example of a disability, they usually associate physical features with it. But a disability can be invisible or very well coped with that many may not define them as a disability. An example of a disability that is often dismissed or misunderstood is deafness or hearing impairment. Deafness is defined as a hearing impairment that is so severe that the child is impaired in processing linguistic information through hearing, with or without amplification that adversely affects a child’s educational performance (Dussault, 2003, p2). Bing aware of the disability and the different outcomes is important because there are different levels of deafness. “Hearing impairment” means impairment in hearing, whether permanent or fluctuating, that adversely affects a child’s educational performance but that is not included under the definition of deafness in this section. (Dussault, 2003, p2) This as well can bring complications to the quality of life but the complications can always be overcome.
Richard Axel, a professor at Columbia University (Axel), once said “Each species lives its own unique sensory world of which other species may be partially or totally unaware” (Axel 234). There are many unique species that exist throughout the world, but one of the many prominent species are deaf people. Deaf people must live in their own sensory world because they cannot hear or they have difficulty hearing, which rejects the idea of perception. Perception is defined as the ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses. Deaf people learn to adapt to the hearing world while facing obstacles everyday. Most hearing people are oblivious to the hardships deaf people face, which makes the lives of the deaf even harder. On top of deaf people living a difficult life because of their hearing loss, they also have to face discrimination amongst the rest of the world.
