Radio bikini was a documentary about an operation known as operation crossroads. After the atomic bombs were dropped on japan during world war two many questions arose such as what type of effects would a bomb of this magnitude have on a single battleship or an entire fleet? What would be the effects of an air explosion and an underwater explosion? What are the effects from the radiation? How would the underwater explosion affect the ships and the harbor? How long would the deadly affects linger? In this paper I will talk about Operation Crossroads and answer a lot of the major questions about the atomic bomb and the affects it would have. Also I will talk about the two test conducted on the island of bikini atoll known as Able and Baker.
What was the reason for the atom bomb testing at Bikini Atoll? The reason was to test the affects of the bomb on an entire fleet of ships in a harbor. Trying to figure out what would be the best position to align the ships so as not to have this type of bomb take out the fleet. They also wanted to study the effects the radiation would have on live animals. There were two test conducted one was a bomb detonating in air know as test Able, the other under water known as test Baker. The first thing that had to be established was who would be in charge of this operation known as Operation Crossroads. These test would be the first since world war two. The man selected to take control of the operation was Vise Admiral W. H.P. Blandy. On January 10 1946 President Harry S Truman approved the operation. The operation included the navy, army, air force, and Civilian scientist. They had to find an island that had little to no people living on it, they also had to make sure it was a location within 1000 mil...

...ontamination methods and permit training people in radiological safety and decon procedure. When the troops of operation crossroads returned to Pearl Harbor many of them became sick the doctors could not figure out why. Some of them died a slow death from the radiation that they were exposed to during the operation.
As of 2013 the Island of Bikini was still determind to be unsafe to live on by the united states because of the radiation. So some things I learned about this operation it was the first to be broadcasted live to the american people. They used these test not only to see the effects but to also learn how to decontaimnate the radioactive material.
