David Berkowitz was born on June 1st, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York, with the name Richard David Falco. Betty Broder and Joseph Kleinman were his real parents but Broder was actually married to Tony Falco. She also had a daughter with Falco. Soon, Falco abandoned Broder without divorcing her. Which is why she soon had an affair with Kleinman, who was also married. When Broder notified Kleinman that she was pregnant, he told her to get rid of the child. Instead, Broder filed Falco as the father of David. Sadly, Berkowitz was put up for adoption a few days later after birth and was adopted by Nathan and Pearl Berkowitz, a Jewish couple. They reversed his first and middle name. David had a somewhat troubled childhood. David Berkowitz was said to …show more content…
be above average with intelligence, but sadly he lost interest in education at an early age and started to have an obsession with committing petty larceny. He was also a pyromaniac.
He had a desire to play baseball but instead became known as a bully in his neighborhood. He claimed that his neighbors dog was possessed by an ancient demon of some sort and that the dog would urge or command him to kill. David was very close to his mother as a kid but had a tense relationship with his father. David’s mother died of Breast Cancer in 1967. The absence of David’s mother made his relationship with his father tenser. David disliked the women that Nathan later married. In 1971, Berkowitz joined the U.S Army and was active until 1974. Although he joined the army, he avoided the Vietnam War and just served in the U.S and South Korea. Out of eagerness and curiosity, Berkowitz chose to relocate Betty Broder, his birth mother. When he found her he had found out about what happened at birth and how he was put up for adoption. They never spoke again. Before Berkowitz started to murder, he attacked two women on Christmas Eve in 1975 with a knife. One victim, Michelle Forman, was hospitalized due to her wounds. Berkowitz wasn’t charged. Not so long after the attack, he moved back to Yonkers. The summer of 1976 is when the shootings …show more content…
began. There were a total of six victims. Berkowitz was named “the .44 killer” in New York due to his weapon of choice. On July 29th, 1976, Jody Valenti, 19 years old, and Donna Lauria, 18 years old, were both shot up in a car in front of Lauria’s apartment in the Bronx. Lauria ended up dying while Valenti lived. This kill was enough to earn some attention. On October 23rd, 1976, Berkowitz shot up two more victims in Queens. They were also in a parked car. Carl Denaro was shot in the head but survived. Rosemary Keenan died of her injuries. On November 26th, 1976, Donna DeMasi and Joanne Lomino were attacked while walking back home from a movie. They both lived but Lomino was paralyzed. After the New Year, on January 30th, 1977, Berkowitz shot up Christine Freund and John Diel, an engaged couple. They were sitting in a parked car. Diel survived but his companion died from her injuries. After this attack, police started to realize that the shootings were all connected when they compared the bullets they would find at the scene. They also realized that Berkowitz targeted young women with long, dark hair or young couples in parked cars. On March 8th, 1977, Virginia Voskerichian, was shot and instantly killed by the bullet. Police stated at a press conference that there was a killer loose in the streets after they out pieces together. They suspected that he had a vendetta against women due to rejection. Eyewitnesses reported that Berkowitz was seen shooting in a yellow Volkswagen. He struck again on April 16th, 1977. Not far away from the DeMasi/Lomino shooting was where Alexander Esau and Valentina Suriani were killed.
At the scene, a hand written threat letter addressed to the police force was found. (To be presented). This letter is what gave Berkowitz his second name, “Son of Sam”. A week later Jimmy Breslin, columnist of the New York Daily News, received a letter from Berkowitz. In the letter Berkowitz explained how he was a fan and then addressed the Captain of the police force and basically warned him to prepare for the anniversary of his first kill, July 29th. On July 30th, 1977, Berkowitz shot and killed Stacy Moskowitz and blinded Robert Violante. A witness saw Berkowitz before he killed the couple and called the police due to suspicion. Police at Yonkers realized that Berkowitz might’ve been “Son of Sam” after reading the letters. They investigated his car and found weapons. He was then captured. Berkowitz tried to use the excuse that it was all his neighbors dogs fault for why he was killing others. Berkowitz was sentenced to six life sentences, which is equal to 365 years. He then claimed that the Hall and Oats song, “Rich Girl”, influenced the murders. Today, Berkowitz, 62 years old, is still locked up in the Sullivan Correctional Facility in upstate Fallsburg, New
York.
First, David’s mother gave him enough courage to keep hope his father would be all right after the Nazis arrested him. Because their own house was no longer safe from Nazi invasion, David’s family was staying with friends. However, Nazis burst into the house they were staying in on...
Asher Lev and his mentor, Jacob Kahn illustrated a relationship of God’s creation and temptation from the devil. Throughout the novel, Kahn pushes Asher to devote his life to art, and describes it as “a tradition; it is a religion...It has it’s fanatics, and I will force [Asher] to master it” (Potok 213). Throughout Jewish texts, it is clearly stated that God’s people, whom Asher Lev belongs to in the novel, will face temptations from The Other Side that will lead them away from Him. As art is against Orthodox Jewish beliefs, another Jew persuading and encouraging Asher Lev to continue his passion of painting, can be a symbol of the devil in disguise. This is furthered, as Kahn introduced his pupil to many
The first shooting occurred on July 29, 1976 and the second months later; and the third one month after the second. At this point, Berkowitz had shot six people but the New York Police Department did not see any relation between the shootings. In January 1977, Berkowitz struck again by shooting a couple while sitting in a car. This event caused police to start a search for a .44 caliber killer. A .44 caliber gun is the type of gun that Berkowitz used in all of his murders. He continued to elude police, he even began taunting them. Berkowitz started leaving note addressed to the NYPD captain near all of his crime scenes. In the letters he spoke to police telling them of how he was recruited to commit the murders and addressed himself as the “Son of Sam”. This is how Berkowitz attained the name The Son of Sam Killer.
The crime committed by Bernhard Goetz in 1984, is one that can be interpreted as an inhumane act of violence. On December 22, 1984, the thirty-seven year old Bernhard Goetz boarded a New York City subway. Sitting alone in his seat with his Smith & Wesson revolver, he was approached by four black teenage males (Linder). The four teenagers asked Bernhard Goetz for five dollars. When this happened, Bernhard Goetz felt endangered, and decided to pull out his Smith & Wesson revolver, and begin to shoot the young men. After firing four bullets in the New York City subway, he had injured three of the four young men. When Bernhard Goetz saw Darrell Cabey, the last of the four teenagers cowering on the floor, he said, “you don’t look too ba...
David Berkowitz was born on June 1, 1953 to a single unwed mother and immediately into adoption. He was adopted by Nat and Pearl Berkowitz, a loving Jewish couple unable to have children. Throughout his childhood, David was repeatedly informed that his birth mother had died during childbirth and these were his new parents (Essene, 2000). David had a relatively normal childhood; his parents loved him dearly and showered him with gifts on numerous occasions. However, he was socially uncomfortable, and possessed a low self esteem, David had frequent violent episodes in which he would often turn over furniture and throw temper tantrums.
Other examples of physical abuse which David received included the never ending punches from his mother when she felt they were acceptable, when in truth, they were for pure pleasure. Also, the burning incident his mother performed on him because “[He] made [her] life a living hell!” and it was “time [she] showed [him] what hell [was] like!” (Pelzer, 28). This incident David depicted for the reader included his mother forcefully placing his arm above a burning flame upon the kitchen stove. The physical abuse David endured was one in which he would never forget. Luke and Banerjee state that children who are abused physically are more likely to develop “problematic peer relationships” aside from their peers who do not receive maltreatment. David is an
In comparison to other slaves that are discussed over time, Olaudah Equiano truly does lead an ‘interesting’ life. While his time as a slave was very poor there are certainly other slaves that he mentions that received far more damaging treatment than he did. In turn this inspires him to fight for the abolishment of slavery. By pointing out both negative and positive events that occurred, the treatment he received from all of his masters, the impact that religion had on his life and how abolishing slavery could benefit the future of everyone as a whole; Equiano develops a compelling argument that does help aid the battle against slavery. For Olaudah Equiano’s life journey expressed an array of cruelties that came with living the life of an
While the validity of his narrative is to this day widely debated, The interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano provides “insight into the dynamics of slavery, the slave trade, and the abolition movement” Traveling back into the 17th century the reader gets a firsthand experience of a life of a young slave who has opened the worlds eye’ and provides reasonable supportive arguments into the abolition of slavery in the aspects of human acceptance and morality, commerce economy, and the freedom of religion which all he has shared with his white owner counterparts.

When I found out I qualified to be a candidate for the NJHS, I knew I had to take this chance. This group is made up of people who depict leadership, character, citizenship, academic success, and service and I would love to join. These characteristics wouldn't just be valuable for a candidate to have, but for everyone to have to exceed in life. If I were to be in the National Junior Honor Society, it would give me an opportunity to ameliorate my future and motivate me to do better.
Siegfried Sassoon was born on September 8,1886 in Kent. Siegfried Sassoon was born and grew up in the neo-Gothic Mansion name Weirleigh. His father, Alfred Ezra Sassoon, son of Sassoon David Sassoon, was member of the wealthy Baghdad, Jewish Sassoon merchant family. Siegfried Mother Theresa belonged to the Thorneycroft Family. Siegfried was the second of three sons, the others being Michael and Hamo. When he was 4 years old his parents separated. During his father weekly visit to the boys, Theresa locked herself in the drawing room.
Berkowitz stabbed his first victims and later started using a gun for his killings. Murderpedia.org was able to give a lot of information on Berkowitz, from childhood, his killings, to him in jail and other information. As mentioned earlier in the paper, he was adopted but he was also a loner that did not social well with others. As a boy, he was hyperactive and a bully to other kids. His adoptive parents ended up having difficulty controlling him due to his hyperactivity. He went into a downward spiral after his adoptive mother died. The death hit him hard and he did not handle it well. Berkowitz had issues and believed demons were talking to him and as his isolation grew so did this fantasy. When the killings began, he targeted couples that were alone in their cars mostly. This is very possibly the reason why he targeted Stacy Moskowitz and Bobby Violante as they were near some woods alone in their car kissing. Stacy was worried that the Son of Sam would attack and unfortunately, she was right. They both took two bullets, the female died later but the male ended up surviving with little vision. This was the last couple Berkowitz killed before he was arrested and found guilty because he confessed. Berkowitz claimed that his neighbors’ dog was possessed by a demon and that he committed the killings for that
