Data Collection and Data Analysis The clarity and applicability of the study findings rely heavily on a researcher’s ability to effectively identify, code and categorize themes and patterns unearthed in the data acquired. As a result, it is of the utmost importance to ensure that a researcher’s analytical skills be strong. Researchers must document and report all analytic processes wholly and honestly so that the findings can be evaluated for credibility or replicated in the future by other scholars. In order to analyze the vast amount of qualitative data generated from the interviews, grounded theory will be employed to analyze the textual data. To reduce researcher or interview bias, routine field checks will be conducted to ensure interviewers are not deviating from their strict instructions on how to conduct the interviews effectively. Moreover, interviewers will be instructed to include rich verbatim descriptions of participants’ responses to solidify study findings and decrease potential for bias (Slevin & Sines, 2000). Respondent validation will also be a critical component of the interviews whereby participants will invited to comment on the interview transcript. According to Long & Johnson (2000), respondent validation helps to ensure that the major themes identified by the researchers adequately reflect the thoughts and opinions of those directly contributing to the findings. The very first step to the “Nine Step Stairway to Effective Evaluation” is to define the research population. Population can mean anybody. So, it is needs to be clear as to who we are focusing on. The specification of the focused population is defined by the evaluation researcher. This can include, age, gender, race, culture, or socio-economic status just to name a few (DiClemente et al., 2013).

In the previous chapters I discussed the problem of the lack of healthy eating promotion programs in schools are leaving parents and students uneducated about how to purchase healthy items which is leading to childhood obesity. I also discussed how the problem is being addressed, as well as the theory of social constructionism. In this chapter, I will discuss the specific methodology I plan to use and the three different types of data collection I plan to employ to carry out my study. This study will use a qualitative approach to study and address the issue of the lack of healthy eating promotion in schools. The three types of data collection I plan to use are: direct observation, focus groups and a questionnaire. These methods will be clarified later in this chapter.
The research is guided by a theoretical framework called the Grounded Theory Approach. The Grounded Theory Approach (GT), first described by Glaser and Strauss in 1967, is an inductively formatted, general method of research that is aimed towards theory development through the data collection process and constant comparative analysis of that data. Cohen and Crabtree, 2006). The concept relies contingently upon the data the study presents and is characterized by the proposed theory being perfectly depicted by the data accumulated. Cohen and Crabtree, 2006).
Confidentiality Maintaining participant confidentiality will be ensured through the safeguarding of all entrusted data and information. Participants agreeing to partake in the study will be presented with an informed consent to complete (see Appendix C). This form will highlight the aim of the study, proposed study benefits, and the potential emotional benefits and risks to the participants. Alongside those points on the informed consent, will be clear notification for participants that at any point during the interview process, for any reason, each will have the freedom to withdraw from the study.
A core phenomenon in a substantive study has clear implications for a formal grounded theory (Strauss 1987).

Surveys are an effective and popular method for research because of the efficiency, versatility and generalizability. Generalizability is the ability to sample and draw research conclusions for large populations (Bachman & Schutt, 2012). In order to effectively maximize outcomes in survey research, surveys must be structured to avoid unclear or confusing questions. Demographic related questions should be avoided if not pertinent to the research study (Bachman & Schutt, 2012). Generally, the motivation of the researcher is clearly identified in a survey, and the respondent has the option of declining involvement in the survey. There are fewer ethical dilemmas with survey research than other types of research methods.

It is important to attempt to eliminate some of these causes in order to complete a thorough, accurate study. In future projects, this study could go about researching the issue in different ways. Perhaps using a larger sample size would be conducive for accurate results. A larger sample size helps reduce and even out any possible errors caused by those who do not answer truthfully. Also, keeping the surveys mainly anonymous would help to receive more truthful and accurate responses from participants. Participants may be fearful of judgments on open interviews or phone interviews, which could affect responses. In order to obtain as accurate results as possible, a future study would need to find ways to survey participants in a confidential way that feels comfortable.
Qualitative and Quantitative study designs both can be beneficial in research design. They both provide valuable options for researchers in the field. These techniques can either be used separately in a research study or they can be combined to achieve maximum information. This paper will define the terms qualitative and quantitative; describe the similarities and differences between each; discuss how qualitative and/or quantitative research designs or techniques could be used in the evaluation of my proposed research; and discuss why linking analysis to study design is important.
