One State has a very strict government with laws that if not followed have major consequences. Freedom is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. Speaking in terms of a society, you are relinquishing your personal freedom to be part of the greater community and maintain the freedom that comes with that society. If you don’t take part in a society, then you will be personally free, but you won’t have any of the benefits society gives you such as a place to live, somewhere to work and a certain level of safety in your daily life. D-503 is never free in this novel because he was born into a society that is afraid of their leader and he knows that if he breaks any rules that restrain his freedom there will be serious consequences. …show more content…

Some ways in which he takes advantage of his freedom are writing the Records and being part of the rebellion against One State. Unfortunately, he spills the beans about the plan to overtake One State. That is where things start go downhill. His imagination is his form freedom, it allows him to think outside the set in stone mold of One State. But now everything that made him an individual was about to be swept away from him. In the moments leading up to the snatching of his imagination: “I closed my eyes and sat down on the steps leading up to the Machine… Somewhere far off I hear muffled shouting: Save me from this-Help!” (208). D-503 is truly terrified because he knows that he is basically being killed. He is being killed because now he has nothing to drive him, nothing to make him different than the other numbers. Now, he is just another one of those mindless zombies moping around One State and is about as unique as a robot. This is D-503’s serious consequence finally coming back to haunt him.
