A First Look at Cystic Fibrosis… One of the most chronic lung diseases which is becoming more and more apparent in typical young children around the world, though mostly Europe, and is somewhat apparent in adults is the genetic disease, Cystic Fibrosis (CF). The name itself comes from the genetically mutated protein that is known as Cystic Fibrosis trans-membrane conductance regulator (CFTR). The disease was first introduced and thoroughly explained by Dr. Dorothy Andersen in 1938. She brilliantly conveyed the negatives of the disease and explained how the disease works. This disease may not seem intimidating but it can suddenly cause a shortness of breath and can be a life threatening disease in a short period of time. Understanding the disease more and more and having more knowledge about can definitely help you, especially if you are subjective to it. This disorder is less popular because it is an autosomal recessive disease. This basically means that a person needs two recessive traits in order to obtain the disease. Both genes from each of the parents have to be recessive in order for one to get CF. Both males and females can acquire the disease or inherit it. The mutation of the disease lies on the 7th chromosome and there have been over 1000 different mutations that have been scientifically discovered. Triangle-F508 is the most common mutation of the disorder. Over 2/3’s of the worldwide population that have Cystic Fibrosis is from this mutation. That is an incredibly large amount of people who suffer through this disease. Fortunately this disease is not contagious (hereditary) and there have not been any major outbreaks of this disease. Over the years, as research has been steadily growing with the addition of new technology, there have been new ways to help people live longer than never before. Having a doctor who specializes with CF and going to quarterly check-ups every 3 months to diagnose any new symptoms and CF itself can drastically change your life if you are diagnosed with CF and following the treatment very thoroughly can only make your life better.
