Reading this paper a person might say well it seem like I do not fully sticks to the Haitian cultural practice. The truth is I do believe and follow some of the Haitian custom and I stay away from some of what they believe in and practice. I believe in mental illness whereas the people of my culture especially the one living in Haiti do not. Worldview is the lens through which someone views their life and interprets the world around them. Our worldview is what shapes our beliefs and practices of healing. In “A Very Bad disease of the Arms” by Michael Kearney talks about his own worldview, which was scientific and materialistic compared to the Ixtepeji worldview. We expect Kearney worldview to be just that because he comes from an educated and financial stable background. On the other hand, we have the Ixtepejanos which are not privileged enough to have the background of an ideal “white man”. An anthropologist comparative method is used to find differences and similarities between cultures. Kearney wanted to know why they “could walk the same streets, abide in the same houses, eat the same foods, and yet live in such different cognitive universes”. Kearney realized that he faces each day with a sense of security knowing that he’s in control of the factors that affect him directly. In the contrary, Ixtepejanos interpret their world with harmful and lethal immaterial forces.

My cultural identity, is Haitian American. My parents come from a country of beautiful landscape and valleys of the hidden treasures of knowledge, diverse people, and rustic towns. My parents walked up steep plateaus for water, laid in grassy plains for peace, and dive into the sea for cooling in Haiti’s humid heat. Although, I come from a culture of deep history, the first country to gain independence in the result of a successful slave rebellion, my parents knew the plague of suffering Haiti’s battle with will not recover through the poverty, unemployment, and illiteracy. As Haiti fought through its demons, my parents fought to provide plentiful opportunity for their family and immigrated to the United States of America.
The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman is a nonfiction book that brings to light the clash of Hmong culture and Western medicine in Merced, California. Anne Fadiman tells the story of a Hmong immigrant family, the Lees, and the unfortunate condition of epilepsy that their daughter Lia suffers from. Throughout the book the reader sees great conflict inflicted on medical practitioners due to the Lee’s own cultural beliefs and the frustration suffered by the family due to miscommunication. Anne develops the story by giving a detailed background of the Hmong peoples’ lifestyle in their indigenous land of Lao, how it contributes to their beliefs, and their struggle to understand and accept Western practices.
In America the clashing of cultures is inevitable due to the different backgrounds that make up the country --- especially when it comes to treating patients medicinally or through more traditional ways. The conflict occurs in The Spirit Catches you and You Fall Down By Anne Fadiman, when the culture of western medicine collides with Hmong practices. A daughter of a Hmong family, Lia, suffers from epilepsy and is brought to the Merced Community Medical Center (MCMC) to seek treatments that will alleviate the symptoms of her seizures. While the doctors and parents try to find ways to help Lia, they encounter cultural barriers such as their differences in practicing medicine that inhibit their ability to help her efficiently. The MCMC doctors and the parents are both responsible for the increasing cultural conflicts because of their negative biases towards each other long before they meet.These negative biases were later enforced by their lack of trust and respect as the book progressed.
The purpose of the assessment is to address the competence of different cultures. Ruth Benedict’s anthropological book, Patterns of Culture explores the dualism of culture and personality. Benedict studies different cultures such as the Zuni tribe and the Dobu Indians. Each culture she finds is so different and distinctive in relation to the norm of our society. Each difference is what makes it unique. Benedict compares the likenesses of culture and individuality, “A culture, like an individual, is a more or less consistent pattern of thought or action” (46), but note, they are not the same by use of the word, “like.” Benedict is saying that figuratively, cultures are like personalities. Culture and individuality are intertwined and dependent upon each other for survival.

However if this same person has a broken limb, is injured, diseased, or has cancer somewhere in their body, they can go to the doctor, people have compassion and pray for them, and they can typically get fixed without judgment. Philosophers of mental illness are apprehensive with examining the ontological, epistemological, and normative productions arising from varying conceptions of mental illness that may be tied into the Church.
We in the United States believes that medicine can heal everything; as in the other culture like the Hispanic culture believes in susto. According to the book, susto victims are those who suffer from,” loss of their souls feel tired and listless, have trouble sleeping, don’t care about their appearance, little appetite, and insomnia,” (235). Basically it occur when a certain event happen that causes the soul to leave the body. When the western culture looks at this they believe that people are just suffering from psychological distress. In sum, we don’t know how many people or culture believes in the Western health system, but we do know it is very prevalent. Such ideas and beliefs can hurt certain individuals because they don’t have the right resource to know what exactly is going on. Their culture may not speak about certain things but because social insecurity pushes theme to found better treatment they will look to the Western ideas about mental illness. This would lead to misdiagnosis of such mental treatment and factors. One would believe their illness is the same as another but soon realize they are not the
