The first cultural immersion activity that I participated in was going to St. Charles Catholic Church on Ash Wednesday (March 5, 2014). I had a friend who was catholic attend the church with me so I would have a better understanding of what to do and not stand out so much. In addition, I asked my friend to attend with me so I would not do anything in church that was disrespectful. Before going to the church, I thought that I would have to dress up in dress clothes but my friend told me that it is not necessary to dress up for a catholic church, which surprised me. When we first got there, my friend used the holy water and kneeled before entering the pew. I did not do these things because I felt like I would mess up and it would be disrespectful to the religion to mess up those things. Another thing I noticed was when everyone was entering after they have found their seats they would kneel and pray. Later I asked my friend what everyone was doing and she said it was praying to catch up and talk to God about things that has happened since the last time you talked to him. Once the service started, my friend showed me where the schedule for the service was and what each number meant. There were different colors of numbers in the book and those indicated what section the reading or song was coming from. This was different from the church that I attend because we have a choir and a band that plays the songs and if you wish to join in you can but for the Catholic Church there is, no choir and the members of the church are the ones who sing. After some singing, the priest came up to talk and this is very different from what I expected. I was used to flipping through the channels and seeing the catholic churches with the priest who were a ... ... middle of paper ... ...e able to use this in a classroom and teach the students how to create these bracelets and how they are originally made. I could use this activity in the classroom by sharing the information that I received from the members of the First Nations Educational and Cultural Center. A lot of this information would be extremely helpful when talking to my students about Native Americans it gives information from the perspective of a Native American. My thoughts after this activity was how friendly and welcoming the members of this group are. I was also amazed on how much I actually learned there not only about beading but also about weaving and the Native American culture. From talking about different Native American tribes to the dances and outfits worn for these dances. I definitely would like to attend either another craft night or an event held by this cultural center.
The collaborating individual chosen for this case study is Eva Pollinger-Middleton, a twenty-three year old undergraduate student in the College of Education at the University of North Florida. Eva is majoring in Secondary English Education and is currently in her junior year. Eva is ethnically Lumbee, which is a Native American tribe native to the north Florida Area. Although Lumbee is not a federally-recognized distinct tribe, Eva is highly invested in furthering her culture’s recognition in educational settings, including both increasing Lumbee presence in curriculum relating to Native American studies for students in the general education program and in furthering educational opportunities for students who are Lumbee. The service concluded with the bishop standing and speaking to the people for a few minutes he spoke on the importance of the service and He shared some scripture and personal stories. After the service Father Constantine invited everyone next door for refreshments, and stayed in the nave to answer any of our questions, this time was very helpful to me since this was my first time at a Orthodox church. Overall it was a very enjoyable experience I learned a lot about the Orthodox tradition. I don't think I would have been able to grasp the differences between the different branches in Christianity without witnessing them first hand.
This past week SUU’s native American student association (NASA), hosted their 38th annual powwow. Our club, the SUU Polynesian club was invited to dance for thirty minutes between their activities and we happily accepted. After we danced we were invited to come back so that we could watch and experience the native American culture. I was surprised to see how similar their culture was to ours!
I remember when I was in grade six the native chief of the reserve back home in Parry Sound came to our public school and did a big speech on the native medicine wheel. He showed us pictures and diagrams of it and taught us about all the different beliefs and meanings of the colours. They still teach this stuff to children in public school today which is really great considering how long it has actually been around.
When choosing a religious service I was very limited on my choices so I was intrigued to go back to my roots and try the Catholic denomination. This denomination is the one that is most prevalent in my community and also in my social circle as well. Since I have actually been to a Catholic church as a child I thought I knew what to expect but I was shocked at how naive I was to the subject. My preconceived ideas and thoughts were that there would be a lot of getting down on your knees then back up again then saying your Hail Mary’s with not much depth to a service. Also growing up with a social group that was full of Catholics you would always hear of confession so that was something I was particularly dreading for the fact that I did not quite understand the concept and believe in it. This did not take place however which was a sigh of relief on my part cause I was not ready for that big of a leap from my own comfort zone.
With the dwindling population of Native Americans, it is fair to assume that most do not want their culture to die out. The falling rate of Native Americans could be the fire needed to get them active in their heritage. It is the perfect opportunity to learn more about their own culture and pass along the knowledge, discovering new art, stories, and history through their elders and oral traditions. From another view, their role is to also gain a voice in politics to help preserve their tribes and reservations, as well as try to keep unemployment and poverty rates
John Neumann Catholic church on Sunday with my friends. The outside of the church has a big cross hanged on top of the building, which is similar to all the Christian churches I saw before. Without mentioning this church is a catholic church, I would not be able to distinguish the difference between Christian and Catholic churches. When I first walked in the church, the interior was beautiful, but I was shocked when I saw a lady kneeling down pew kneeler. Then a group of people who were wearing whites vestment walked with a big cross on their hand, and there was one person who wore green vestment walked in the middle. The mass starts with a song, then a speech, then they talk about the book section. However, I have always heard the rumor that Catholics discourage Bible reading. This mass has proven this stereotype was incorrect. Catholics actually do read the bible and they also discuss about it during the mass. For the most of the time, they discuss the bible reading and sing. Also, as you can see in my Cultural Plunge picture #3, there is a photo of the mass schedule where listed the bible reading assignment for each mass. Towards the end of the ceremony, the priest told people to hold hands and pray, and they also ask everyone to introduce themselves to the people around them. Towards the end of the mass, there were people pass a basket around to collect money. I was a little to confuse about this process, but I believe this basket would be use for some good

At 9:55 a man referred to as an usher greeted me and handed me a program. The room I entered into next was large and had an aisle down the center separating the seating. There were eight chairs seated side by side in each row and fifteen rows in total on each side of the aisle to provide comfortable seating for 240 people. I took a seat amongst the rest of the youth in the second row from the front of the platform. On the platform at the front of the room sat various instruments, a large podium and multiple speakers. There was a large, rectangular opening in the center wall at the back of the platform where a large tub with steps, referred to as the baptism tank, was located. Beyond the tank was a large wooden cross hanging on the wall.
It was magnificent. The first thing to catch my eye was a monstrous chandelier that hung from the 50 foot ceiling. It was awe inspiring. As my eyes surveyed the room, it was hard to miss the antique maple pews that provided seats for approximately 300 people. Plush emerald green carpet was the grounding to the room. It's path led directly up to the stage which was home to a variety of items. The band, pulpit, arid baptismal were the most obvious. Above the stage was a huge dome, it was colored in shades of blue, mauve, white, and several other soft accents. A bright light was right in the center of its point. Our gazing was soon interrupted when the official greeter returned. This time she was quick and to the point. She collected our cards and informed us that service was about to begin. Within a matter of minutes, a middle-aged man stepped up to the pulpit and asked us to stand.
Scissors, Paper, Rock! For my first cultural event, I attended the University Performing Dancers rendition of “Scissors, Paper, Rock!”. This dance performance took place in University Hall here on campus. This performance is considered a cultural event because the game Rock, Paper, Scissors is an ancient game that many different cultures have claimed to invented.
For this cultural plunge assignment, I attended the Choma Food Festival hosted by the African Student Association here on campus under the Office of Multicultural Affairs. This event interested me because I have always been fascinated with the African culture, as in wanted to know more about it, but I was not able to fully discover what all it entailed. I feel as the African Culture is part of my heritage that I am most unfamiliar with. African culture is very different from the American culture, so even though I am African American, there is so much to learn about the aspect of African culture alone. People of African descent have a rich culture and I am glad that I attended the event, because it was like discovering a portion of my ancestral background that I wasn’t aware of.
I enjoyed my time at Our Lady of the Highways Catholic Church. I learned many things that day. I was able to appreciate their different customs and see new things. Though Communion was something I knew was going to happen at the Catholic Church, I wasn’t really comfortable being there because I felt like I was intruding. It was something meant for their members of the Catholic Church so I just stood there watching them. It was a different experience for me, but I enjoyed it.
As I was attending mass, I noticed, it was very organized. There was a lot of sitting and standing, where I found myself struggling to understand. I noticed that they read some passages from the bible and sang a lot of psalms and hymns. The only thing that was familiar to me was the Eucharist.
As a Pace University student, I am encouraged to make the most of my educational career by pushing myself to new experiences that enhance both my personal growth and academic success. With that being said, since attending Pace I have become more of an independent woman seeking new aspirations that were never thought of prior to enrolling in the institution. Henceforth, the reason why I would like to continue my cultural immersion in London by enrolling in Richmond’s Film department. During this time, I will gain new perspectives on Film and Screen studies with the influence of European and British cinema. Throughout my time studying abroad, London will be put to use as an extension of the classroom as I will truly take the time to visit historical
