This self-reflection paper will explore how diversity has impacted my life as an immigrant and the benefits and challenges I have faced because of this. Prior to moving to this country, I did not have much knowledge about what diversity really meant. I began exploring the true value of diversity on February 20, 2002. This was the day my view of diversity would forever change.
As a kid, I did not have any prejudices and would see people the same, skin color, race and language weren’t barriers to connect with people and therefore, did not understand why people would discriminate other people. Discrimination “is a behavior that occurs when members of social identity group are treated unfairly, because of their group memberships.” (Harvey & Allard 2012, PP. 45)

Our company’s policy embraces equal opportunity for everyone and they don’t discriminate because of race, color, religion, sexual orientation, etc.
Working in a company that embraces diversity has helped me “think outside the box” I work with people that bring different strengths to the workplace. We all have different ways of resolving problems, but we always work together to reach the same goals. In addition, our company works with customers from all over the world. This help us gain different perspective on how different cultures operate.
Living in the United States has helped me discovered what diversity really means, I don’t think I would have embraced diversity the same way I do if I would have stayed in Chile. I say this because even though the population of immigrant has grown enormously in recent years, Chileans still haven’t completely embraced diversity unlike the United States where cultural diversity is very important. Every individual in society and in a community is unique in their own ways, and their diversity shows up in many ways. The United States has often been referred to as a global “melting pot” due to its assimilation of diverse cultures, nationalities, and ethnicities. In today’s society, this metaphor may be an understatement. Between 1990 and 2010, the number of foreign born United States residents nearly doubled from 20 million to 40 million, increasing the U.S. population from almost 250 million to 350 million people. With U.S. born children and grandchildren of immigrants, immigration contributed to half of this population growth. These immigrants, consisting of mostly Asian and Hispanic backgrounds, have drastically changed the composition of the U.S. population. In 2010, Asians and Hispanics made up 20 percent of the U.S. population, in contrast to a 6 percent share of Asians and Hispanics in 1970. It is predicted that by 2050, the share of immigrants in the United States will increase to one half of the entire population. With this rapid increase in diversity, many citizens have opposing views on its impact on the United States. In my opinion, an increase in immigration does contain both positive and negatives effects, but in general it provides an overriding positive influence on America’s society (“Population”).
When people hear the word 'diversity', they often think in terms of black and white. I believe the true meaning of diversity is not simply about skin color, economic background or the face value of any other characteristic, rather it is the increased knowledge and sensitivity gained from unique experiences. The strength of diversity then comes from having many points of view and trying to reconcile them by finding common truths or resolving differences amongst people. Being a person of mixed heritage, my father is black and my mother is white, has definitely affected my life and contributed to the development of qualities that enhance my ability to embrace the uniqueness of those around me. Being raised in a single parent household and the values passed on to me by my mother have also been strong influences in my life. My greatest contribution to my community is the ability to create relationships between people of diverse backgrounds and a desire to understand others' beliefs.

We need to be aware of the diversity in the classroom. Cultural diversity includes: bi-racial, adoptive, immigrant, gay, and step-families. It is a large majority of the students today even in my generation. Focusing on making a balanced curriculum that exposes the students to all of these different backgrounds is very important. I know that it is likely that a teacher will not be able to cater to every student, but it is important to involve each of them. Diversity should be respected and definitely noticed because it shows our uniqueness and self worth (McHale). Culture is a very strong part of everyone's life. Instead of trying to ignore our differences we should embrace differences and be proud of who we are. We can learn many different things if we give people who are culturally different from us a chance. Cultural diversity gives us an opening to learn about the uniqueness of the world. Now that we have explored my past, present, and future experiences with diversity, it is time to see how they are present within and effect each other. Firstly, let’s look into how my future is present in my past. The most obvious portion of my future that is in my past is my willingness and efforts to love and include everyone and to spread this world view. It took a fellow classmate of mine to demonstrate to my third grade self that we are all human beings and we all deserve to be treated as such. In my future, I aspire to demonstrate this world view to my students and inspire them to treat each other accordingly.
