The globalization aspect for a sports leader requires him/her to face new markets and challenges. Leaders will find new challenges in boundary spanning, ethical standards, and understanding diverse cultures. (Borland, Kane , & Burton, 2015, p. 333) Many simple tasks that national leaders face on a daily basis become much more difficult to do globally. Cultural differences can be broken down into sections:
1. Interacting and Communicating:
Interacting and communicating nationally is easily done within a nation. Many citizens and higher-ups interact using the same language/body language. A global leader will encounter multiple religions that have strict rules and boundaries that might pose a threat to hosting events. Some communities practice the belief in fasting for x amount of time while others, do not believe in fasting at all. (Forum, 2016) Leaders will have to adjust their approach according to which faith the community’s practices.
3. Ethnicities:
Similarly, ethnicity increases significantly on a global market compared to a national. Depending on race, some leaders will have complications enforcing their ideas or opinions. According to Research Center for Leadership in Action, studies have shown that a work environment consisted of generally white race struggle to accept the leadership of a black male/female. (Ospina & Foldy, 2018) Even though, both national leaders face this challenge, it becomes more alarming when faced globally. Other challenges/difficulties global leaders face are universalism, dealing with different codes, laws, and regulations, learning to manage staff in other countries, and leveraging on how to support workers and athletes who come from diverse
