Marley leaned against the wall, trying to ignore how dirty and grimy it was. This was easier said than done, but she managed. This game of waiting pissed her off, but so did everything else that day. She was used to playing chauffeur for Olivia and was more than willing to do it for Aiya in a pinch, but Ashley? Why would she ever, for any reason, be willing to help Ashley? Actually, why did Ashley need help? She had a car. She had friends to bother for rides if she needed them, so why hadn’t she called them. Marley didn’t know the answer to either of these questions, but she did know that she was there. And that her car was right nearby, meaning she had showed up. To pick her sister up from whatever it was she was doing here. You know, that sister she hated. The hatred she sang to the heavens. Yeah, that sister. As if to spite her, Ashley still hadn’t come out. It was …show more content…
She wasn’t good with shit like this, Aiya could vouch for this. Her idea of helping mainly involved throwing ice cream and presents at people until they were happy enough to pay attention to her again, but she didn’t particularly care to try that with Ashley. It probably wouldn’t work and, even if it did, she wouldn’t kiss Marley’s ass. Mind drawing a blank on what to do, Marley started to drift to the side. She was pulling over, apparently. She hesitated, no idea what to do about this. “Do you want ice cream?” She didn’t care about her sister. “I’m not fucking eight.” Well, it had always worked with Araia. “Do.. well, do you want ice cream with a side of vodka?” For a few minutes, it was silent again. Had she ever mentioned how much she hated silence, because she couldn’t now. She couldn’t go and make this about herself. “Well, I’d prefer wine.” There was a sigh. Was that Marley? It was, one of relief. So maybe she cared about Ashley, just a little
The author Ken Kesey was born in La Junta, Colorado and went to Stanford University. He volunteered to be used for an experiment in the hospital because he would get paid. In the book “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, Kesey brings up the past memories to show how Bromden is trying to be more confident by using those thoughts to make him be himself. He uses Bromden’s hallucinations, Nurse Ratched’s authority, and symbolism to reveal how he’s weak, but he builds up more courage after each memory.
For this final paper, I would like to discuss the historical failures that came into light when Mr. Clifford Stoll (the author of “Cuckoo’s Egg: Tracking a spy through the Maze of Computer Espionage” book) stumbled upon a $ 0.75 accounting error and the revelations that followed, its potential findings, risks and costs associated and why it is important to address and fix those security holes. Cuckoo’s Egg is an interesting read and the author was successful in presenting to his readers the picture of beginning of Internet days (arpanet, then), network practices then. Despite of the fact that this book describes a real incident that in 1980’s, some of the findings are relevant and torment us even today.
In the beginning of the story, the reader could tell that Ashleigh knew how her father was “always there if [anyone] need[s] him,” but not invariably there when she needed him (36). This detail allows the reader to know that Ashleigh’s dad is not always ready to help Ashleigh, and Ashleigh doesn’t like how spasmodic her father is towards her. Ashleigh’s father also struggles to think about the feelings of his family members as he “got all of his favourite kinds of Chinese” and did not make the effort to get Ashleigh and her mom what they preferred (37). If Ashleigh’s father does not make the effort he needs to about little things, Ashleigh can not trust that he has thought through something that causes her to be dishonest with her mom, especially since the whole situation appears to be very sketchy. Ashley will not steal the money because she knows that not only is it wrong, her father may have not thought the consequences and depth of the task he is asking her to complete..
This essay will be exploring the text One flew over the Cuckoo’s nest by Ken Kesey and the film Dead poet’s society written by Tom Schulman. The essay will show how the authors use over exaggerated wildcard characters such as McMurphy and Keating. The use of different settings such as an insane asylum and an all-boys institution. And Lastly the use of fore shading to show how the authors can use different texts to present similar ideas in different ways.

When they first come to the Island Philip is dependent of timothy and doesn’t want to work because he is blind stated by him in the novel. ”I just wanted to sit and think. I didn’t want to work. I said timothy I can’t work I’m blind”. Page 70 in the novel. Then when Timothy almost died of malaria so Timothy trained him to to rely on himself. Phillip starts being independent of Timothy when he carves a crane for philip so he can move around the island and also attaches vines to each side of the island so philip can walk back and forth from the hut.In chapter eleven is when philip says ” Timothy fashioned a cane for me and I was now using it to feel my way around the island ”.” I was starting to be less dependent on the vine ”. While still dependent on timothy he started to be less being able to walk without him and the vines. To test if Philip was now independent of Timothy he had to climb a tree blind. When he first went up to it he had stop and
The third reason is Ashleigh knows that her mom was saving the money for an emergency. “‘Oh well, Ashes, you can always see right through me.’ He was one who’d been looking right through me toward the door, but I didn't say anything” (pfeffer 3).This quote means he was worried about people coming after him in the diner-putting her in a scary situation. The quote is stating, “‘That is a lot of money .What if mom finds out?’ ‘It's me who she’d be angry at me’”(Pfeffer 4). This quote means. That her dad lost at gambling and wanted her to steal the money so he could gamble again. So he did not learn his lesson. The author stated in the text, “ Good head on your shoulders. Problem is, I’d never be able to find another car this cheap to replace it. ‘No the Teapot is the way to go ’” (Pfeffer 4).This quote means Drove her to the house to steal
“Women have been taught that, for us, the earth is flat, and that if we venture out, we will fall off the edge,” verbalizes Andrea Dworkin. Gender-roles have been ingrained in the every-day life of people all around the world since the beginnings of civilization. Both One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Hamlet portray typical female stereotypes in different time periods. Due to the representation of women in literature like Hamlet by William Shakespeare and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kessey, and pop-culture, evidence of classic gender-based stereotypes in a consistently patriarchal world are still blatantly obvious in today’s societies.
“You may call me Ariana. Sorry for the intrusion.” Never in my life have I seen such a polite interruption before.
Everybody wants to be accepted, yet society is not so forgiving. It bends you and changes you until you are like everyone else. Society depends on conformity and it forces it upon people. In Emerson's Self Reliance, he says "Society is a joint stock company, in which the members agree, for the better securing of his bread to each shareholder, to surrender the liberty and culture of the eater." People are willing to sacrifice their own hopes and freedoms just to get the bread to survive. Although the society that we are living in is different than the one the Emerson's essay, the idea of fitting in still exists today. Although society and our minds make us think a certain way, we should always trust our better judgment instead of just conforming to society.
Fred Wright, Lauren's instructor for EN 132 (Life, Language, Literature), comments, "English 132 is an introduction to English studies, in which students learn about various areas in the discipline from linguistics to the study of popular culture. For the literature and literary criticism section of the course, students read a canonical work of literature and what scholars have said about the work over the years. This year, students read One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, by Ken Kesey, a classic of American literature which dates from the 1960s counterculture. Popularized in a film version starring Jack Nicholson, which the class also watched in order to discuss film studies and adaptation, the novel became notable for its sympathetic portrayal of the mentally ill. For an essay about the novel, students were asked to choose a critical approach (such as feminist, formalist, psychological, and so forth) and interpret the novel using that approach, while also considering how their interpretation fit into the ongoing scholarly dialogue about the work. Lauren chose the challenge of applying a Marxist approach to One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest. Not only did she learn about critical approaches and how to apply one to a text, she wrote an excellent essay, which will help other readers understand the text better. In fact, if John Clark Pratt or another editor ever want to update the 1996 Viking Critical Library edition of the novel, then he or she might want to include Lauren's essay in the next edition!"
