In a world full of jobs, cruise ship workers have one of the most dynamic occupations in the world. In order to be a cruise ship employee, an individual has to be able to leave the normal life and take on a lifestyle that is very diverse from the norm. Crew sacrifice some important aspects of life, such as family, having a real home and being separated from work. Being a cruise ship employee isn’t just a job, it is a lifestyle that requires extreme changes.
Becoming a part of a cruise ship’s staff comes with a few basic requirements. This is not true. Cruise ship workers work every day of the week. There are no particular days off, but there is some time to relax during the day. Working on a cruise ship means being a salaried worker. Most shipboard workers have contracts. Lower-level crew tend to have the largest contract, with ten months being the average contract length (Motter). The salary that members make on a cruise ship is varied. The ship size, cruise liner, and job experience will all effect pay rate. Another factor is salary versus commission. “Tipping is serious stuff. It represents well over 95% of what the crew makes. Carnival gave me something around $60 a month or so when it was all said and done. "Salary" also included the cabin shared between shipmates, plenty of food and two crew parties a month” (Askin). The majority of cruise ships workers come from second or third world nations. A lot of cruise lines claim that isn’t the case anymore, but the statistics show otherwise. One of the worst parts of working on a cruise ship is a feeling of being owned by the ship. The ship employees and guests stay on is owned by the corporation so they control what employees eat, how cold it is in cabins, when its break-time and so on.
