Taylor Swift as an influential feminist
Taylor Swift came to the public eye when she was fifteen years old and she had to learn how to be a role model even though she was still figuring herself out. Over the years, many people have criticized Taylor Swift by saying that she fakes her feminist and that she does things to her own advantage but she has decided to show the world that she is capable of defending herself all the time. I claim that despite the critics, Taylor Swift has shown that she is a feminist who has influenced society through her example, lyrics, videos, speeches and reaction towards criticism.
Through her example, Taylor Swift has shown females how they should not let others take them down. In 2016, the rapper Kanye West

She is trying to show girls that they do not have to fit in categories; they do not need to do what people want them to do. She is fighting back a male society that has decided to objectify her even when she does not objectify herself. Since Taylor Swift became an artist, she has never released a video showing her body however, she still gets to be called a bitch by Kanye and other people in because of her dating life and the fact that she has had many boyfriends. When Swift was questioned about her love life in an interview for Cosmopolitan she said, “Why is it mischievous, fun and sexy if a guy has a string of lovers that he's cast aside, loved and left? Yet if a woman dates three or four people in an eight-year period she is a serial dater and it gives some 12-year-old the idea to call her a slut on the internet?' It's not the same for boys, it just isn't and that's a fact." Clearly, Swift wants equality and is using her recent music and interviews to raise aware on the stereotypes we still have. Even though we are supposed to be in a third-wave feminism, we still call women bitches or sluts if they choose to be as open as guys in …show more content…
During a photo taking session in 2013, a Denver DJ named David Muller sexually assaulted Taylor Swift. Obviously, the radio fired Muller for the incident so he decided to sue Swift for three million dollars in damages. Swift, who initially decided not to make public the incident responded by countersuing DJ Muller. However, she only asked for one dollar in damages. According to the CNN website Swift’s lawsuit mentions as reasons for countersuing that, she wants this incident to be "an example to other women who may resist publicly reliving similar outrageous and humiliating acts.” Swift has not taken on social media to ask for support or to play the victim in the incident although this has definitely been an uncomfortable episode for the artist. She is showing that she is capable of dealing with this on her own while encouraging other women to be brave and fearless too by reporting sexual assault no matter if years have gone by since the event. According to an article called “Taylor Swift sexual assault case: Why is it significant?” Swift’s lawyer said the artist only asked for one dollar because she did not want to bankrupt Mr. Mueller, but rather use the case to send a message to all women that "they will decide what will be tolerated with their body". This incident has helped raise awareness to reporting sexual assault and even the TIME
How does Swift want the reader to view his speaker? That is, how would Swift want his reader to describe the persona he adopts? Swift wants the reader to view the speaker as a reasonable, compassionate and rational person who has a genuine interest in solving the problems of the poor Irish. In the beginning of the essay, the speaker appears to be a concerned person who demonstrates a keen insight into the issues he addresses. However, this is contrary to the fact that the speaker predominantly relies on random and absurd statistics and logic to present his solution. By acting as someone compelled to solve the plight of the poor Irish, the unknown speaker makes his words more effective and establishes himself as someone who would never make the outrageous proposal that follows.
Trina’s intent was to create a song that liberated women from the double standards and stereotypical views placed upon them. Her song however can cause harm to young women that listen to take this song to heart. Instead of liberation, we are moved further down into the hole of degrading and devaluing women. Trina should’ve sent the message that these things were wrong. Instead she endorsed and encouraged them.
Because Swift constructs a speaker who is meant to be seen as himself in “Verses on the Death of Dr. Swift, D.S.P.D.”, his approach to the satire changes, taking on a more playful approach. The poem is more personal than political, and is more comedic in the sense that he satirizing himself as well as other people groups. The self-defeating rhetorical approach is embodied in this poem in the way that he puts himself down and exposes his own follies throughout the poem. While this is no doubt somewhat tongue-in-cheek, this in some ways frees Swift from criticism from outside sources. It is difficult to wager criticism at someone who has already wagered it against himself. While this could also be seen as poking fun at other writers who are self-deprecating, this self-defeating narration is used mostly comically in “Verses on the Death of Dr. Swift, D.S.P.D.”. In spite of this, it does effectively build a narrator who is well defended in the sense that he cannot easily be criticized from outside sources.
On the night of December 13, 2013 Beyoncé, released her fifth self-titled album on ITunes. The album caught many people by surprise because Beyoncé did not set a date for the album, nor did she use any promotion; she did release a video on her Instagram asking her followers if they “were ready”. The buzz spread through social media like a wild fire. With no promotion or no warning, Beyoncé album took the world by storm and made it for her audience and critics to take in the album and it contents. Many people loved the album for not only its catchy songs, but also the growth and “looser” conservative Beyoncé. On the other hand many people did not feel that her album was growth, but a way to catch up to the overly sexual generation. Beyoncé has always been aware of her sexual side, pop side, and feminist side; this has been documented through her four previous albums. Yet, a lot of people have questioned if Beyoncé a feminist because of the content of her newest album. In order to answer that a person must ask him or her self; what is a feminist, why some people believe she is feminist, why others do not believe she feminist, and whether or not Beyoncé think she is a feminist.
In today’s world, celebrities are often misunderstood, especially singer/songwriter Robin Rihanna Fenty, referred to as Rihanna. Rihanna’s sexual behaviors in her videos have been talked about in negative ways for some time now, but what [eople do not understand is that it is all for fame. Celebrities will do anything to keep their career going strong. If one really took the time out to take a deep look at Rihanna, they will notice how humble she really is. After going through the abusive relationship with Chris Brown, Rihanna has struggled with gaining that strong confidence with who she is. Her critics believe that she is still trying to discover herself and figure out who she really is as a person. Rihanna is often given two choices, to do what she is being asked to do, or throw her career out the window. She either gives the crowd the sexual acts they want or let her career die down. In the song “S&M,” Rihanna was really exposing herself to the crowd, as well as “Good Girl, Gone Bad.” She is basically telling the crowd that this is the person she is, but is it really? For my original piece I will be creating a journal, expressing the feelings Rihanna felt as she overcomes her struggles. Rihanna’s sexual behaviors in her videos are really all for fame and therefore, are easily misunderstood.
It has been played in many other countries and is listed in many major hit charts in those countries. It became one of her best-selling singles. Beyoncé has been singing about women’s independence since she was in the hit group “Destiny’s Child”. Many of her songs support women’s lifestyle and keep cheering up girls with her powerful and expressive vocals (Armstrong). In addition to her songs and lyrics, her beautiful appearance fascinates many female audiences and influences from teenagers to grown-ups as if she was a role model. A negative side of the video is that the video gives the impression that men are always to be blamed and women are always “victims” of the relationships, which is not
Women need to act sooner rather than later because in recent years the rap industry has become more and more sexual. Rap is critiqued so harshly because many rap artists take the exploitation of women to the next level. In his music video for “Tip Drill” Nelly swiped a credit card down a woman’s backside. Rap crosses the line more so than any other genre. Not only are women portrayed sexually in the music videos, but also in the rap songs themselves. The lyrics are explicit and usually go into great detail when they describe sexual acts. During an interview Nelly was asked why rap gets such hard criticism he replied with: “Part of the reason rap artists come under fire more than any other group is because people don’t respect what we do as art. When actress Halle Berry...
...en endured throughout the Realist literary period. This oppression has evolved into strong female business figures. Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” shows the perceived inequality and inferiority of women throughout this era. This lies in contrast with strong, powerful female officials, such as Supreme Court Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan. Chopin’s The Awakening illustrates a literary attempt at women’s activism. Women’s activism is still present today, and is seen in the recent happenings at the Plymouth High School baseball and softball fields. Women have evolved past their positions as domestic keepers that were subordinate to men to active, equal members of society. Feminist literature has aided this evolution over the year. Women have overcome oppression through activism and garnered more rights since the termination of the Realist literary era.
This song represented the time in 1993 when women in the hip hop culture were not taken seriously as males, so Queen Latifah had to call the judgmental people out. U.N.I.T.Y has the significance impact of feminism, just like her first two albums as an artist. How every man, she states calls a women “ho” or “bitch” she defends by saying “Who you calling a bitch?”. Another song that has been recalled as an importance of women in hip hop is the song (9) “Give It To You” by Da Brat. “So let it go, Cause my shit is tight, Take it how I give it, And enjoy the night”, she is talking about the males, if they have something to say about the women in the rap industry they should let it go before things get out of hand. The importance of this song was that ladies in hip hop are able to fight back stronger. In the song (10) “Lost Ones” by Lauryn Hill is about her talking about a person she has a brutal honest message to. This song has an important impact on women who would want to be in the hip hop culture because it is the woman's choice to decide what she wants to do. In 1998, she releases this song to brings an influence to women, if feeling threatened by men, women should refuse to be treated in any type of way that is
However others female hip-hop artist, such as Lil Kim or Rihanna, have decided to provide no resistance towards the deleterious depictions of women in their music and in turn sometimes exploit themselves. Due to her extreme fame, success,
The way Taylor Swift is promoting the prevention of bullying, and protesting for social change is very effective, because through her usage of similes in her song’s lyrics, and how she gives a more detail picture with her video where she connects with does who are victims of bullies. “You, with your words like knives/ And swords and weapons that you use against me/ You have knocked me off my feet again/ Got me feeling like a nothing…” This is a way of connecting with her viewers because its a clear picture of how bullies continue with the same routine being judgmental, and making their “prey” sad, disappointed of themselves, and fell like a nothing. “Physical bullying increases in elementary school, peaks in middle school and declines in high school. Verbal abuse, on the other hand, remains constant.” This quote helps to understand the idea that swift is trying to give to society and to convince that we need to change and help decrease bullying and decrease the drop out rate. Taylor Swift also makes the statement of “Someday I’ll be living in a big ole city/ and all you’re ever gonna be is mean…” in her song because she wants to emphasize that bullies wont make it to be anything else than bullies and that the weaker man is going to have a great life and become a stronger man. This is another way that Swift indirectly connects with her viewers by encouraging them to never give up on life and go pass what bullies will never
In their respective day, both Maria de Zayas and Emma Watson have been heralded as strong advocates for the promotion of gender equality. Seeing the rampant inequities present in 17th century Spain, the fiction of de Zayas sought to bring about greater justice for women. Similarly, Emma Watson has emerged in contemporary society as a champion of women’s rights and a proud self-proclaimed feminist. From de Zaya’ short story “Ravages of Vice” and Watson’s speech at the 2014 HeForShe Campaign, messages related to feminism, gender equality, and gender justice are presented in a manner that makes their audience re-conceptualize their preconceived notions about the role each gender plays in society. While de Zayas berates men for their treatment
Have you ever had those certain catchy songs that you just can not get out of your head? For me Taylor Swift is always at the top of my playlist. Taylor Swift was born on December 13, 1989 and grew up on a small tree farm. Swift has has a family background of singing in her family. Ever since she started recording her albums. she has written and performed all of her songs. Swift started becoming successful at a young age by performing and writing new songs whenever she got the chance. When Swift was 11 years old, she performed the national anthem at a Philadelphia 76ers NBA game. (“Facts”) The contributions to music demonstrated by the career of Taylor Swift prove beyond a doubt the Country Music Hall of Fame should induct this singer. Swifts worthiness of this award is shown in her awards, charitable contributions, and impact up on the music world and all of her fans.
Ever since I was in eighth grade, I have been obsessed with Taylor Swift. She has been my role model since I was thirteen. When you look at most singers today, they have to be singing about drugs or alcohol, using vulgar language, or performing half-dressed. You never see Taylor Swift doing anything that she would be ashamed of later in life. On the other hand, she has had many relationships that have lasted short time periods. At least, she is not getting married for 72 days or even 24 hours such Kim Kardashian or Britney Spears. This is why I chose to write a research paper on her.
At the young age of just twenty-four, singer/songwriter Taylor Swift has already made her mark on the world. With four platinum records, several hit singles, and seven Grammy Awards, the young songwriter has been a source of both entertainment and inspiration for people of all ages. Unlike other artists, Taylor Swift is completely fearless with her songwriting. Whether she’s singing about her first day of school, falling in love, or breaking up with a boyfriend, Swift always shares intimate details about her personal life in her lyrics. Many people love this quality about her, but others think Swift gives women a bad reputation by appearing to be a flawless and blameless victim in her songs. Regardless of the negative thoughts some people have about her, Taylor Swift is undoubtedly a huge success and a role model for teenage girls all over the world.
