Reflection Precis 1, The Social Construction of Race & Sociological Theories of Race & Ethnicity (6/13-18/2024) Part 1: Race and ethnicity have become a great part of the social cultural identity of humans. These identities greatly influence many aspects of a person’s life, including social interactions, opportunities, and experiences. It is important to note that the concept of race and ethnicity is a social construct as brought up in a lecture with Dr. Jendian (Week 2, 1:26:02). This was made to classify individuals and create boundaries and in turn make sure the “white” race was the dominant race. The syllable of the syllable. This idea suggests that racial categories are created and maintained by societal norms, institutions, and interactions, primarily by white individuals. This brings the Critical Race Theory into play, arguing that racism is embedded in the fabric of society, including its laws, institutions, and cultural practices. It is important to understand the injustices that these minorities face because of the social construct of race and ethnicity which hinder or prevent individuals other than the white race to be seen as equals or even just as a human being. Part 2: I think Critical Race Theory (CRT) is particularly important to understand because it allows individuals to understand that race and ethnicity are social constructs and need to be understood as such. This leaves the individual with the possibility to not only understand the injustices of minorities, but also fully comprehend how they themselves are liable to these injustices by creating or following stigmas about other races other than their own. It is true that when we step into someone else’s shoes, we can grasp just how bad they have it.
