1. INTRODUCTION
Employers cannot pledge that employees will never be exposed to trauma in the workplace. However, they can take action to help prevent the most devastating effects of exposure to trauma by sufficiently preparing employees for traumatic situations. In this writing we will be looking at what trauma is and the different interventions that can be used to address trauma in the workplace.
2. POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychological health condition that is caused by frightening and terrifying events that one can experience or even witness. Symptoms may include, nightmares, flashbacks and severe nervousness and anxiety, as well as overwhelming thoughts about the occurrences. The common sources of trauma are physically violent in nature, others are psychological and also include; domestic violence, rape, the death of a loved one, natural disasters, severe illness or injury and witnessing an act of violence.

Preparation includes both the ability to respond in the moment and reacting necessarily by utilising coping strategies and social support after the incident. An event is more likely to be experienced as trauma when a person …show more content…

Critical incident stress management continues to support those who are disposed to trauma or shock, as well as those who have experienced an extremely traumatic event by: reducing the impact of the critical incident, encouraging the regular recovery process, by restoring the adaptive functioning skills of the person or group and also by normalising inborn reactions to the incident. Critical incident stress management determines the need for further supportive services or therapy.
