Hawaii’s Sand Less Beaches
The mother pondered over each place with such scrutiny, and the son sighed, “Why don’t we just go to Hawaii? At least they have a beach to cool off when it’s hot.” He was forced to stay in the scorching room with his mother to decide on their next vacation. Couldn’t he be able to play while his mother searched for a place? He just sat there for the past hour in silence, after all. “I’ve already considered Hawaii, but there are no beaches there anymore.” “Why?” The mother started to become frustrated with her son’s tendency to ask an infinite number of questions, “Erosion.” “What’s that?” “When the water hits the beach, sand is carried away when the wave recedes, slowly chipping away at the beach until, no more

People have tried redistributing sand, seawalls, etc. but the solutions turned out to be counterproductive—most of the sand was washed away.” The boy gave up trying to understand his mother, “So then what’ll happen to beaches in places like Fiji?” The mother perked up at the idea of Fiji—maybe they could go there instead? “So long as they keep trying other methods, and eventually find one that works, they should be fine.” She hurriedly sought for Fiji through the web, reaching out to grasp the pictures and toss them on the side. “Search: Fiji,” she ordered the computer. The boy was still curious, “But what’s out there that could make the sand stay there forever?” “I’m not sure about forever, but there is a solution that lasts longer than seawalls. Supposedly there is a ‘Sandsaver’ that works like it’s supposed to, and the material is durable and recyclable.” “Then why haven’t they tried it yet?” “I don’t know,” the mother sighed. “But why don’t we try looking at Fiji this year? The beaches there are supposed to be beautiful!”
The Future of Hawaii’s

It’s natural to have sand erosion and lost beaches, however many attempts to maintain Hawaii’s beaches have only provided temporary solutions; “[they] have tried several times, through several methods” (1) and in many cases, have encouraged the loss of sand over the years such as the case of sand walls. The beautiful beaches of Hawaii, just as the picture shown above, will cease to exist if nothing is done to preserve it. Beaches in Hawaii are already starting to disappear like that in Waikiki. The beaches there are steep, reflecting sand loss; sharp rocks have emerged from underneath, causing a major safety concern. Once the beaches cause a safety concern, the state will close the beaches to protect its people. And the beaches that we all know and love, will just be a memory, forever memorialized on the internet.
Culturally, beaches play a large role in the Hawaiian culture as it is a large source of resources. Even the sand within the beaches are still used today as a form of sandpaper to scrub down coconuts and make them into beautiful instruments. It’s not just about getting the end result in Hawaiian culture. The process and the journey is what really matters. The idea of losing such an important aspect of Hawaii’s culture supports the idea that Hawaii needs to keep up its appearances for the safety and welfare of its
However, if any action is taken to defend the coastline, if you hinder in nature's course of beach erosion, there will always be after effects resulting from unnatural intrusion. This proves that any sea defence could prove a problem especially with the land owned by Nation Trust. Nevertheless if you could prove to the owners of the land to the extent of which erosion is taken place and show them how much LSD is affecting the area, action may well become a better option.
Semaphore Beach is affected by many factors such as natural processes and human impacts including marine litter and the discharge of stormwater. Therefore, several plans have been employed to ensure that the coast is supported through the method of counteracting erosion. However in the future, many management strategies have been put into consideration as well as the environmental, economic and social impacts as well as the predicted consequences. These impacts include traffic related incidents, noises and air pollution and the disruption of wildlife and the erosion of dunes. A method that should be considered for future management of the beach is the use of a concave sea wall, although efficient, this structure would be quite costly. Without the use of coastal management, Semaphore Beach would be unsupported, therefore negatively being affected by a variety of
There are many different types of coasts that exist throughout the United States. The south shore of Long Island has a unique types of coast known as a barrier beach. Barrier beaches are long narrow land forms that are composed of sand and other lose sediments. These sediments are brought together by the actions of waves, currents and storm surges. Barrier beaches are subject to constant changes by the same forces. Sand is constantly eroded in one area an deposited in another. Barrier coasts are important for a number of reasons; they protect the mainland of Long Island from the open ocean and flooding during storms, for recreational use and the unique ecosystems which exist on barrier beaches.
Longshore drift is a process by which sediments are transported from one place to another. When this process occurs, beaches, spits and sandbars are accreted over time. If the process of longshore drift is altered by factors such as stronger winds and stronger currents, beach erosion begins at a faster rate and this may result in many serious problems. The main stakeholders of longshore drift are resort owners. They rely on people to visit their resorts and enjoy the beach. However, if longshore drift erodes t...
Walter Cavanaugh and Gary Grossman had a serious dilemma. Their entire households were literally falling away from them. Their houses on Indio Drive in the Sunset Palisades Planning Area in Pismo Beach rest atop a bluff that protrudes into the sea. The impact of the waves of the Pacific Ocean against the land was eating away at the bluf, breaking it down into gravel.

When I stepped out of the hot, airless plane into the bright, dazzling sunlight beaming down across the burning concreate, I felt excited and nervous. Holding my beach bag in my hand and slipping my Ray Ban sunglasses on with my other, I flip-flopped down the airspace. Overhead I heard the screams of gulls and the chatter of the small fluffy birds. I suddenly realized I had arrived to Hawaii. This trip was such an unforgettable vacation for me because I got to witness the beauty of nature that Hawaii has to offer.
Hawaii is a top vacation destination by many tourists all over the world. When Hawaii comes to mind many people and different cultures imagine sandy beaches, warm, blue waters, lush green backdrops, Hula dancers in grass skirts with flowers in their hair and leis around their necks. These visual representations are iconic symbols of Hawaii and of what many have come to define as Hawaiian. These images and ideas painted by the visitor industry most often take place at the expense of the Hawaiians historic culture. These stereotypes conjured up by the tourist indus...
Hawai'i is a land full of diverse people and ideas, starting from the Polynesians who decided to cross the ocean to settle and form the traditions practiced today by the Hawaiians. Unlike many other states, the beliefs of Hawai'i have managed to stay alive. Its unique culture is what attracts tourists most. Many people see it as a vacation spot, full of fun attractions and say, “When I go to Hawai'i I'm going to get some Hawaiian tattoos, they look so cool!” or “I'm going to buy a hula skirt, they're really pretty!” But all those hula dances and tattoos are not just for show. People do not know that there is more to it than ink or hip swaying; behind every hula skirt and every tattoo there is a story. Hawai’i’s culture consists of the significance of its dances, tattoos, and traditions that give Hawaiians their unique lifestyle.

For decades tourists and local beach goers have been flocking to Southern California in search of an inviting environment to relax and enjoy all the amenities a coastal climate has to offer. Yet despite the beauty and breathtaking atmosphere, many unforeseen factors may alter your perspective in regards to how frequently you visit these beach locations. In its current state many beach destinations surrounding the Orange County, California area are susceptible to urban runoff bringing copious amounts of pollution to the waterfront. As it stands urban runoff is attributing to the decline of water quality in numerous locations like Doheny Beach and Poche Beach, which for several years now have remained present on Heal the Bay’s Top 10 Beach Bummers list. With two of Orange Counties own beaches being present on the Top 10 list, it is now apparent that there is a breakdown in the system in regards to policies responsible for controlling runoff headed to the ocean.
...e island many times on medical mission trips. She shared many stories about the Vanuatu people and their way of life. They are a happy nation and are very welcoming to outside influences. They are a people who are eager to learn and are glad to have guidance and teaching in the areas of biblical studies, agriculture and many other areas of life. Until researching it myself for this project, I had no idea the depth of culture that I was about to dig into. It is my hope to be able to one day visit the island. I feel very strongly that they just need people to care and to get involved to help them to be self-sufficient. The Republic of Vanuatu is full of diverse culture that is lost to the rest of the world and it is my hope that through research and further development they can remain true to their customs but still be able to function adequately for themselves.
Over the past year there has been over a million pounds of trash and debris filling up our landfills. This trash and debris have been found all over the beaches and found in the water killing ocean life and killing our reefs. This problem can cause our ocean food supply to plummet. It can also affect our economy ultimately by affecting our tourism. I am interested in this issue because, living in Hawaii and going to beach everyday I see beautiful beaches being trashed. So I would like to do anything I can to help the beaches and prevent this from happening.
People from all over the world go to beautiful beaches that are filled with water as clear as ice or as beautiful as diamonds. But, what will happen if we do not conserve the appealing sites that draw attraction to the public? Contaminated beaches has become a controversial issue to the public because of the causal problem, the harm to the people and marine animals, the government agencies supporting or opposing pollution, and the industries involved in creating such unlawful decisions. To create and find a solution, we must first find the core to the problem.
