With our food production system expanding, often times we do not even realize where our food comes from. Perhaps one of the biggest misconceptions about the food we eat is behind dairy milk. We grow up seeing pictures of happy cows in rolling greens pastures on our milk cartons without ever questioning is this really the way they live? With capitalism and greed is it true that their welfare is favored over increased profits? Unfortunately the answer, in a vast majority of dairy farming practices, is no. Contrary to the images we see of happy cows on milk cartons, cows being used on dairy farms face extreme abuse, confinement, and mutilation. According to another article by the U.S. Newswire assessing a report released by Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, these claims “are generally subjective and not verified. The regulations of the National Organic Program are vague, non- specific as to species, and inconsistently applied.” (U.S. Newswire) Research has shown that organic producers still keep their cows indoors for a majority of cows. Because of loopholes, farmers are able to rob animals of their natural settings such as grazing. Research has also shown that organic producers are unable to give their cows medications and still consider them “organic” so often times when cows have illnesses or disorders they go untreated, of course at the expense of the cows own well-being. Aside from being exploited for products that do not belong to humans, animals that are truly raised “humanely” due to specialty labels are only a “very small percent, about 2 percent, of the billions of animals exploited for food each year in the U.S, and even animal derived foods produced according to a "humane" program may not meet consumer expectations.” These labels are meant to mislead consumers, in order to make them feel that they are making more humane choices. Cows are disfigured likely without the use of anesthetics, selectively bred to overproduce, and constricted in inhumane conditions all at the expense of their own well-being. The calves born for no reason other than to have than to make their mother produce milk, are then used and consumed without ever seeing anything but the cruelty their mother and, possibly, their babies face as well. Even alternative labels such as organic and free range do not guarantee better treatment, and in some cases, can be even worse. Fortunately there are tons of plant-based milks on the market to replace the extreme cruelty of the dairy
