Courage Speech assignment
Ever did something risky, you took pride in it? Was everyone proud of you too? Did you have the courage? Courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. Martin Luther King jr. once said “Courage is an inner resolution to go forward despite obstacles.” Courage is doing something with great fear. Ever thought of courage in not so high class people. What is true courage? How do people display true courage? What are some false ways people measure courage? In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout and Jem’s father, Atticus has great courage standing up for a black man. Back then, whites were in a higher class than the colored people. Because Atticus was white,

Courage is being afraid of a decision. Most people think that courage is doing something dangerous. The true meaning of courage is making choices with confidence and integrity. Maya Angelou once said “Courage: the most important of all virtues because without courage, you can’t practice any other virtue consistently.” What this quote is saying is that courage takes a willingness to try and without trying, the world may never know. Such as, Scout always saying hi to Mrs.Dubose when they pass by. Scout knows that she is not a very nice person, but she had great courage to at least talk to her. Courage is strengh in the face of pain or grief. As we all know, racism was a huge expansion back then. This was all between the colored and the whites. Atticus had real courage by standing up for a colored person. In the book. To Kill a Mockingbird, mostly everyone makes snap judgements instantly. Everyone quickley made a snap judgment upon Atiticus. Although the obstacles in their neighborhood, they still made an effort to keep pushing through to find light in a dark …show more content…
First, is forcing others. Although, people are afraid to do it themselves, they force other to do it. For instance, when I was younger in elementary school some kid was dared to climb the monkey bars all the way across. Doesn't sound so bad huh. This kid was terrified of the bars because he broke his arm last time he did it. He asked everyone else to do it. Everyone refused. He was very angry and forced another kid to do it instead of him. The child that was being forced felt very uncomfortable and did not want to. Forcing others to take the courage instead of you does not show true courage. Second, is doing for judgment. Sometimes people take courage to impress one another. Courage is about doing what you want to do. Courage is not for someone
One of the characters who show real courage is Tom Robinson. Being an African-American and living a generally prejudiced town like Maycomb, Tom was already licked from the start. Tom was allegedly accused of raping a white person and as Atticus says, “In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s, the white man always wins” (295). During his trial, Tom could have lied about his reasoning for helping Mayella, to keep himself from getting into more trouble but instead he showed real courage by revealing the real reason behind his actions: “I felt sorry for her, she seemed to try more’n the rest of ‘em” (264). Since Jim Crow laws were active in Maycomb, Tom’s answer was seen as a terrible mistake: “Below us, nobody liked Tom Robinson’s answer” (264). It showed that he, being a black person, thought he was better off than a white person. Tom also had real courage to go and help Mayella out in the first place; he didn’t have to, and by doing it he was putting himself to risk; any bystander could have gotten the wrong idea. However, he helped her anyways out of sheer goodwill. Another act of courage Tom did was when he tried to escape prison by running over the fence. He was licked from the start because he only had one good arm a...
In conclusion, Atticus shows praiseworthy courage and behavior, in many instances, throughout the story; not by fighting or killing, but by standing up for what he believed in a civilized and determined way. His sense of morality and equality motivated him to take the risks he did, and was praised by the African American society for the actions he, as a white man, took to support the blacks. In many other instances people were able to display courage, and some good came out of it. Antigone pleased the gods but payed the price for taking unimaginable actions. Rosa Parks sparked a sense of freedom from racism and segregation in the minds of many. Courage is taking risky actions, of which even if you have slight chances of success, you continue to follow through with it and never give up.
For a younger character, like Scout, courage is most often associated with a physical act that is usually dangerous. It is hard for young children like that to realize that greater courage is shown in other aspects of life. Scout sees an example of courage in her father when he shoots the mad dog. Although Atticus did not think of it as very courageous, Jem and Scout were proud of their father and the courage he showed in the situation. He was not trying to prove anything, yet they were still impressed. Later on in the story, Jem and Scout encounter the vindictive Mrs. Dubose. "Your father's no better than the niggers and trash he works for!" (Chapter 11, Page 113) When she bad- mouthed Atticus like that, Jem decided that the best way to settle things was to ruin Mrs. Dubose's camellias. After Atticus heard about this stunt, Jem was made to read to her every afternoon for a month. Mrs. Dubose was a very sick lady, and had morphine to ease her pain. It was not until after she died that Atticus explained to Jem and Scout how courageous the lady was because she knew she was dying but was still determined to die free of the morphine. She fought against great odds, even though she knew that she would surely die. Between these two examples Atticus set, and the many more he showed in the way he lived his life, Scout was taught to stop fighting with her fists and to try and overcome opposing opinions with her head, rather than with physical violence.
Courage is when you know you’re beaten. The character Atticus, for instance, who was a seasoned lawyer acted courageous defending Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson was a black man who was accused of raping a white girl. Atticus was appointed to defend him. Jem was happy because he thought his father had won the case but Reverend Sykes loathed telling Jem “Now don’t you be so confident, Mr. Jem, I ain’t ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man…”(Lee 208). Atticus was sure he wasn’t going to win the case, nevertheless he gave it a try. That didn’t stop Atticus from trying to defend his client Tom Robinson. Another part in the novel when Atticus was courageous was when he shot at the man street dog. Heck Tate the Maycomb Sheriff was not as courageous as Atticus so he handed Atticus the air rifles and with one shot Atticus took down the street dog. Miss Maudie says “I saw that, One Shot Finch” (Lee 97). Atticus was referred to as one-shot finch because of his shooting skills. The other incidence in the novel when Atticus portrays courage was when he was not scared when Bob Ewell threatened him. Bob Ewell was the man who accused Atticus’ defendant Tom Robinson of raping his daughter Mayella. Atticus thought Bob Ewell threatened him as some sort of revenge, but unfortunately Atticus was wrong because when Bob Ewell said ...
Courage is not something that we are born with, it is a skill that takes time to learn and only a few are lucky enough to have it. To Kill a Mockingbird is not only about life in a world full of hate, it is about standing up for anyone’s beliefs being brave enough to do it. In this story, Harper Lee says “Courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. It's knowing you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do” (Lee 112). In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee illustrates courage through Atticus Finch, Mrs. Dubose, and Arthur Radley.
"Courage is when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what." (124) As stated by Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is when you know you won’t win, but you follow through with your ideas
Atticus’ words on courage mirror those of the Greensboro lunch counter sit-ins because they were nonviolent protests against segregation at southern lunch counters which showed that Americans that there are other ways other than with just fists. As History.com/Staff states in the article The Greensboro Sit-Ins “...many of the protesters were arrested for trespassing,” Atticus explains that courage is more than senseless fighting for what is perceived as right. When Lee notes, “It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway...” (149). She is showing how hard it is to keep a cool head when it seems that the world is against what is right. Atticus’ teaching show that one must strive to do what they believe in, but also, be able to face the truth of the matter without coming out with fists flying. And the truth sometimes you just don’t win, but you still must keep your composure when faced with an advisory. The participants of the Greensboro Sit-ins showed how truly courageous they
Furthermore, Atticus showed true bravery when he went against Maycomb, a generally prejudice town, in order to defend Tom. He understood that taking the case would make him an object of scorn and ridicule. That no one would forgive him for believing in a black man's word rather than a white man's. Even his own sister expresses disapproval of his decision, practically telling him he was bringing disgrace on the family. But, no matter how much his reputation suffered, he did not change his mind. Standing up for his convictions was more important then what people thought about him..
One of the best explanations of courage is the following by Maya Angelou: “One isn’t necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential. Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtues with consistency. We can’t be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.” Her explanation summarizes all that courage can lead you to who you are in life. Courage is standing up for what you believe in, despite disapproval, pain, fear, uncertainty, or intimidation. Courage is challenging what is normal. Courage is giving voice to those who cannot speak for themselves. Courage is using whatever power available to educate the world about injustice. Courage is following your heart even when the path is not known. Courage is trying after failing.
Courage is the thing which can be found in a child to an old man. It needs a lot of courage to take out courage from the heart. It is like a brain. It depends on the person, how and when he uses it. This tiny word has the power to convey the whole gesture of a person. According to Harper Lee?s genius ?To Kill a Mockingbird?, Courage is when you know you are licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through it through no matter what.
“Courage - a perfect sensibility of the measure of danger, and a mental willingness to endure it.” Courageous people understand the danger that they face when they act how they do. That is what courage is all about. Many historical events occur due to people having the courage to do what they think is right, or because of those who use their courage to do what they want. Having the courage to stand alone in one’s beliefs may be one of the hardest thing a person can do.
Courage is hard to come by especially when you are not doing it for recognition . Even though Atticus knew there was a great chance they would lose he still fought his hardest for Tom Robinson , the African American , man to be declared innocent in the trial .”... real courage… is when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what ,” pg. 149 . Once
Scout believes at the beginning of the book that courage is all to do with physical feats like fist fighting. Scout and Jem though Atticus was courageous when he shot the mad dog, but Atticus just shrugged it off telling his children that that is not ? real courage?. The children soon see that moral courage is more valuable after Miss Dubose said "Your father's no better than the niggers and trash he works for!" Chapter 11, Page 113 after they walked past her house.
Courage: The ability to do something that frightens one. The meaning of this word took a huge part in the essay "The Dreamer," By Junot Diaz. Being a poor, seven year old, Dominican girl has to be hard. But imagine how difficult it is to be a poor, seven year old Dominican girl that wants an education.
Acts of courage are shown in every day of life by people all around the world. These acts may result in stressful and complicated situations. There are many ways to describe acts of courage depending on the situation being faced. It is expressed when fear is thrown aside or when accepting a challenge. In order to achieve personal integrity, courage is very important.
