Family plays an important role in Costa Rica's culture. Family in Costa Rica may look like family life in the United States, but it is very different. In Costa Rica, people keep family very close. Many households have several generations of family living in the same house. Children can live in the same house until they get married. Living all in the same house is really cramped with barely any private space. What makes living in a Costa Rican house even more impressive is that the house is half the size a small house in the United States. Well it might be challenging, but it brings the family closer together. It is common to see a 14 year old with a younger kid in Costa Rica. People in Costa Rica do not get embarrassed easily. Junot Diaz is Dominican American, and he came from a very poor family with five other siblings. Since they were not that wealthy, they lived in a simple way. Even though his mother was basically the bread winner of the family since his father could not keep a job, she still manages to send money back home every six months or so. When they got home from their vacation, they had found out that someone has broken into their house and stole most of his mother’s money. It was easy for them to be a target because they were recent immigrant, and in their neighborhood cars and apartment were always getting jacked. His mother was very upset; she blamed her children, because she thought it was their friends who had done such a thing. “We kids knew where
The physical science of the two countries is completely different. According to the main speaker, Costa Rica is much smaller than the United States. It could actually fit in the state of Oklahoma about two and a half times (Northwestern Oklahoma State University, 2010). The population is a little different too. Costa Rica’s population is around 4.5 million, compared to Oklahoma which has approximately 3.4 million.
The animals in Costa Rica live in a hot place so they can stay warm sense reptiles need to stay warm because reptiles and cold blooded. Most of the animals that living in Washington are warm blooded for the cold winters and falls so they don't die from lack of heat. But, those that are cold go underground into hibernation because of the heat and the lack of food. The animals of Costa Rica don't have to do that because it is always warm out. Most animals live close to some source of water because if some animal is not hydrated they become weak and get killed or die. The food for most animals are by the water or in the water so, the predators become the hunted by larger and more dangerous. Most of the animals in Washington don't all stay by the closest water source, some get their water from underground, others get the water they need from plants. Each and every animal is different in its own

Would you prefer vacationing in a dense jungle or a scorching hot desert? Thankfully, I have had the privilege to do both. Over the past year, I have traveled to the beautiful rainforests of Costa Rica and the barren wilderness of Bonaire. By studying the parallels and differences of both destinations, one has the ability to understand the travel expectations, habitats, and activities of Costa Rica and Bonaire.
As you can see in the graph above, family characteristics of US and Puerto Rico families differ in many ways. Families in Puerto Rico can be very large with many generations living in the same home for a great period of time. In the United States, this would seem very strange because we put such an importance on being independent and going out into the world and making something of ourselves. Our families tend to be smaller and family outings are not very common but once a few times a year. In the Puerto Rico, your family is your support system, your friends and whatever you do is for the betterment of the family. The United States puts more emphasis on our friends as our support group and what we do is to further our own personal achievement and status instead of our family. At their core, Puerto Rican families are about support and togetherness, while United States families are about stability until we have a chance to make a name for ourselves. The Puerto Rican family aspect and togetherness is something extremely lacking in the United States and something I personally believe we ...
Guatemala’s culture is a unique product of Native American ways and a strong Spanish colonial heritage. About half of Guatemala’s population is mestizo (known in Guatemala as ladino), people of mixed European and indigenous ancestry. Ladino culture is dominant in urban areas, and is heavily influenced by European and North American trends. Unlike many Latin American countries, Guatemala still has a large indigenous population, the Maya, which has retained a distinct identity. Deeply rooted in the rural highlands of Guatemala, many indigenous people speak a Mayan language, follow traditional religious and village customs, and continue a rich tradition in textiles and other crafts. The two cultures have made Guatemala a complex society that is deeply divided between rich and poor. This division has produced much of the tension and violence that have marked Guatemala’s history (Guatemalan Culture and History).
The Structure of families is sometimes based on gender. Gender roles in the Dominican Republic are similar to the roles that use to be the norm in America and that is still present in some households. The men are treated as superiors while women are seen as house wives. Women are the primary caregiver, either through divorce or widowhood or if the husband is working far away from home (“Roles of Women”). Also women are expected to be dedicated in being a mother and a daughter and by their late twenties to be married (“Dominican Republic Traditions and Etiquette”). It is interesting that they are expected to be married at a certain age. The men take on the role that is traditional which is being the one who enforces rules. The role of the men and women is also based on the social class they are in. The middle and upper class families are called patriarchal and the father is the norm (“Dominican Family Structure”). In the lower classes of the Dominican Republic the women are taking on the role of the men, which is to support the family. In the lower class families the structure is sometimes matriarchal because the father does not live in the house (“Dominican Family Structure”). It is interesting that depending on the social class it determines the structure of the household. Also the family structure can also depend on the oldest married couple or within their extended family the oldest male would holds authority....
A gang is an organized group with a recognized leader whose activities are either criminal or, at the very least, threatening to the community. (Walker, 2011) Throughout history there have been some infamous gangs that have gotten media attention and others that have gone under the radar. One of the more underground gang structures are prison gangs. The Nuestra Familia may not be in the news as much anymore compared to other gangs, but they are nothing to be taken lightly. Prison gangs have been around since the late 20th century and only seem to be getting stronger if nothing is going to be done to prevent them. Gangs in prison have members in and out of prison. One of the more popular gangs that has been gaining steam recently is the mainly Hispanic gang La Nuestra Familia. The purpose of this paper is to write about the history of the NF, the structure in which it operates, and some good preventative tactics that could prevent prison gangs from becoming stronger.
... role in Puerto Rican culture. The Puerto Rican home is a place to connect with family members, wind-down and not feel pressured by the outside world. All these contribute to the closeness of the family dynamic in this wonderful culture. The home is used for many things that American families might go out of the house to do. Activities include birthday parties, anniversary parties and possibly even weddings. You could find yourself eating, dancing, singing, and just having an awesome time in a Puerto Rican home.

Growing up in the Caribbean has molded me to be the person I am today. Our culture and customs are very different in comparison to Americans, and we take pride in the little things. For one, manners, wisdom, and obedience are just a few of the important aspects of our culture. There is a saying that says “ Who won’t hear, will feel” and a popular scripture “Honour thy father and thy mother.” We show utmost respect to those older than us and are trained on how to conduct ourselves. We grow up knowing life isn’t easy, and that there will be trials to overcome.
I agree with your statement mentioning that the mother was very controlling and over involved in her family's lives to the point of answering questions for them assuming that she "knows what's best". Bitter (2014) states that a diffuse boundary leads to enmeshment which is characterized by family members' over-involvement in one another's lives, and the process of disengagement, individuals or subsystems become isolated, and relationships suffer or even deteriorate." The father has taken on the role of accepting what the mother says and do for what seems to be a long time which has caused him to become disengaged. I too feel that by having the family switch rolls allows each to freely express their point of view and feels without interuptions or judgement. I also think that the technique would work with a Hispanic family that has migrated to the U. S. According to Landale et., " To the extent that such familisim remains alive among U. S Hispanics, one would expect it to reduce the

Growing up in Southern California, especially Laguna Beach, people assume I have money. They think I can spend as much as I want without any repercussions. When in reality, coming from parents that came to this country with nothing, I’ve never really had money to spare. All of my families money goes either to rent or other necessities like food and electric bills. To pay for all our monthly expenses, my parents work every day of the week. Every morning they wake up and go to their respective jobs. For my dad it means waking up at 5:00 A.M and driving all the way to San Clemente to go clock in at a landscape company. Once there he spends hours doing backbreaking work planting and maintaining other's gardens. As for my mom,
